Very smooth booking, communication and pick up. It was nice to hear Ben's personal story too whilst he showed us around the market and throughout the cooking experience. We were traveling with another couple and the class was organised in a way that there was good interaction within the group, making the time fly by. It's set in a clean, shaded Countryside house, so good to be able to see something outside the main town. Some negative reviews has said 'its not a cooking class, more like prep' well, a lot of cooking is prep and I personally found it enough of a class that I could recreate these dishes back home from memory.
Some of the reviews (criticism) seems harsh/unfounded. We had a really great time and I would recommend this to anyone who's in Siem Reap for a bit of time and want a relaxing alternative to the markets and temples.

Dear Yennn17, Thank you so much for your review to our cooking class and very much appreciated for your support to our local community. It was such a great pleasure to host you and show you around my lovely country & the countryside (a way out to see deeper than just a tourists attraction). I am very glad that you found us and like the food and the experiences. Throughout this real hands-on cooking, i strongly believe that you can recreate the Khmer food at home with the recipes given though. Wishing you with all the best and happy travel Ben

My wife and I did the cooking class with the morning market visit. T was our guide for the day. He picked us up promptly at 7:30 AM with a tuk tuk driver to head to the morning market. He provided cold waters and taught us about Cambodian history and explained a lot of the sights to see on the way out of town towards the morning market. Once we got to the morning market T walked us around and showed us all of the ingredients the Cambodian people use to prepare their traditional foods. We also tried cricket, beetle, meal worms, and lotus flower seeds. All of them were great! After the market we headed back to the cooking class. T had us prepare the pumpkin dessert to start things off because that required the most time to cook and it would be ready by the time we’d be done with the rolls and amok. The dipping sauce with the chili peppers were great! Next we made Chicken Amok which was my favorite. We hand ground the Amok paste which was more difficult than I had imagined but well worth the hard work. Folding the banana leaf bowl was fun too! T showed us around the property while we waited for the Amok and pumpkin dessert to finish. We got to meet a couple of the cows and one of the kittens named “Chicken”. T also took time to explain Ben, the owner, story which was fascinating. All of the work that Ben has done for the Cambodian people is heart warming and honorable. Such a cool story that a young boy trying to run into the Tomb Raider film crew to practice his english has spawned an organization that touched so many lives is truly amazing. After the food was done we ate the results of our own work which was fantastic. This was both my wife and I first time having Amok and we both loved it. The pumpkin dessert was a nice way to finish the meal as well. T was very hands on and was a great teacher. He is certainly a very skilled chef. He spoke great English and taught us a few words in Cambodian as well. They emailed us the recipes so we can try at home and said to reach out if there’s anything we can’t find and need to substitute which was nice. Overall a great experience and I recommend choosing Countryside Cooking Class because not only is it a great experience it supports a great cause. Thanks again we loved it!!

We took part in the afternoon cooking course and it was one of the best things we did whilst visiting Cambodia. Our host and ‘Head Chef’ was exceptional and shared so many insights into everyday life in Cambodia. Being able to see life outside of the city was a privilege and we both left feeling very lucky to have taken part in such an experience. On top of that, the food we learned to cook was absolutely delicious, we were collected / returned to our hotel promptly and part of our fee went towards supporting the orphanage there. Definitely book a cookery class with this amazing organisation if you’re in Siem Reap!

After wondering what to do in Siem Reap, I decided to do a cooking course.

Ben managed to accommodate my booking even thought it was only 3 hours before the start, I was very happy, and that was the moment I knew it would be a lovely day.
He does this because anyone that goes on the course is directly helping him provide for about 100 orfans which he looks after.

On the course I learnt how to cook a bunch of delicious dishes and did a market tour with just me and Ben. I also got to learn about his life and his story is the most interesting one I've ever heard.

Overall a very personalised and lovely day for a great cause!

Ben’s countryside cooking class is not only an excellent and authentic cooking class - it is also an important social project.
After Ben and his driver picked us up at our hotel, we set course for a local market half an hour from Siem Reap. Ben took us around the stalls, explaining what is what, how it’s all used and what it tastes like. We were the only tourists around there and the people were very friendly.
Then we arrived at the cooking school, which is also the site of Ben’s social project: he cares for 15 orphans and helps 68 children get proper education. It’s amazing work and it is overly clear how invested Ben is in this. He invited two of the girls to come practise their English with us. They were absolutely charming, and very motivated to learn.
We learned to make banana blossom salad, vegetarian (on my request) amok and a dessert with fresh coconut milk and eggs in a pumpkin. Everything was delicious and Ben answered all of our questions.
Ben then dropped us off at our hotel, and we talked some more about his project. It’s a touching story. We’re so happy to have been able to contribute a little - and to have learned more about Khmer cuisine and culture.
This is an experience we’ll never forget. We definitely recommend it. Thanks again, Ben!

Our family of six decided to take a break from the busy city and journey into the beautiful countryside to take a cooking class. We learned to make three dishes: banana blossom salad, chicken amok, and pumpkin custard. The local chef explained each step that we were preparing. The chef helped all of our kids chop properly with various knives. While the meal was cooking on the fire, we saw a couple rice fields, local animals (played tag with a calf), and an old coconut tree. When the meal was ready, we ate the wonderful foods together. It was good to teach our children & to support this orphanage through the cooking class. Thank you so much, Mastercook Phatlan and Chef Thy!

We thoroughly enjoyed our Countryside Cooking Class. Ben picked us up by Tuk Tuk in Siem Reap, and took us out to his village. We headed to the local market. Ben was of great value here, particularly as he is a chef, and was able to talk with both of us about many of the different fruits, vegetables and other foods. While there wasnt any "action" with local children being supported at this place on the day, it is well set up to support kids in need. The cooking class itself (only the 2 of us), was fun, clear to follow, and educational. On the day we produced the banana flower salad, coconut milk custard fulled pumpkin, and chicken amok. We look forward to practicing these dishes in the coming weeks. Ben is a very friendly and approachable person, with good English and communication skills.

We thoroughly enjoyed our Countryside Cooking Class with Ben! He was a great and patient instructor with wonderful cooking knowledge to share. His English was very good. We have been to another cooking class but this was far superior. We did the work with him as he was instructing us which really made it possible to repeat especially with the recipes he sent us afterwards! Prior to the class, he brought us to the market and explained many many ingredients, and about them. He answered many questions about their culture which we really appreciated. The food was very yummy snd quite the meal! Thank you!!!

We took this cooking class as this place was recommended by a friend of ours. We really liked our experience, from the market visit to the cooking class itself, the teacher was really good to explain everything in details to us! We would recommend anybody to go there, the people there are doing a great job helping kids in need in the area. We did 3 recipes and it was all delicious. They send us the recipes by email after the course. 5⭐️

We had an absolutely amazing time, market tour was great where we found our new favorite fruit and tried some local bbq chicken. The actual cooking class was very engaging and fun with the grandma. We took a break between courses and walked around the rice fields behind the place and pet some neighbors cows. Definitely the experience you’re looking for when you’re thinking of doing a cooking class, not something in lobby of a hotel or a restaurant in town - this is the tour!
