A lovely butterfly conservation centre situated not far from the Angkor Wat temples. The staff were friendly and gave us a wonderful and informative tour of the pretty garden, showing us the different life stages of the butterfly. We stayed for around 30 minutes and saw several species of butterfly. The $6 entrance fee for adults seems reasonable as it's paying for the conservation efforts.

This was my third time visiting. I was saddened to see the reduced operations due to a lack of funding (stupid pandemic), because the staff are really passionate about conserving butterflies.
Our tour guide was passionate and knowledgeable, and we were able to see some butterflies hatch.
I highly recommend you visit the centre when visiting Siem Reap. Combine it with a trip to Banteay Samre and Banteay Srei.

Included is a little tour to show the life cycle of the butterflies at the centre . It about 40 minutes from town and it’s worth getting there at 9am as the place opens .That way it’s not too hot and you have the place to yourself . Excellent variety of butterflies to photograph and worth the trip out though it’s not that cheap . Enjoy

Depending on where you come from, this might be exciting or boring. For us, it was a lovely hour, with toured guide, explaining everything. Also had a lovely meal there for 5 bucks. Good to see these pretty creatures being looked after, nurtured and then released back to nature - about 1,000 every week. Good people, well done.

I went to the butterfly park yesterday with my tuk tuk driver and was pleasantly surprised by the staff who had so much knowledge. He spoke really good English, and was so engaging. Gave us a good run down of the background of the park, the different species of butterflies and showed us the lavae stage etc. Very impressed with everything.
A definite great place to visit on the way to Banteay Srei and well worth the entrance fee. A good job well done to everyone who work there.

We went to break up a day at the temples after visiting Banteay Srei on our way back to Angkor Thom. Our tour guide was exceptional and so knowledgeable. The entrance fee is just $4 for adults and is used in part to create a sustainable butterfly project for locals to earn a living. They have a caterpillar area, chrysalis cages where you get to release new butterflies taking flight for the first time and lots of stick insects. The gardens are well laid out with nice seating to enjoy the butterflies and after the tour you can spend as long as you want wandering around or relaxing. There is also a cafe attached too.
The bathroom facilities are very basic but to be expected in a rural area of Cambodia.

So disappointing, I saw three large butterflies and some small ones, not a large variety. I would not recommend spending your time or money here

Dear Helene,
I'm very sorry to hear that you didn't enjoyed your visit at our butterfly exhibit. We are displaying species native for Cambodia and during the dry season the diversity is normally less than during raining season, although at the moment we still have 11 different species flying in our enclosure including the Golden Birdwing among them, which is the largest day flying butterfly species in Cambodia.
At BBC we are always advising our visitors to use our free guides to show them around the butterfly aviary in order to discover all species and learn more about the world of butterflies.
We hope you'll visit us again during a possible next stay in Siem Reap and allow us to exceed your expectations.
With all the best,
the BBC team

Lovely gardens, interesting guide and I was able to get some stunning photos of the butterflies. We combined a visit here with the landline museum. Both worthy causes.

For USD $6 This Butterfly center is really quite a catch, although a little out of town you can actually do this, landmine museum and Banteay Srey Temple thus making this journey quite bearable. They do have guides whom will explain to you the different butterflies and their lifecycles with some luck you can even get to enter the breeding area and see each stages up close.
The place IF you choose to walk without guide can be "boring" and maybe completed in 10mins. But do stay and actually take your time to look around. Also the money you pay for the admission is used for conservation efforts for butterflies. :)

For a small fee you get a lot of information from a very knowledgable guide. Butterflies are pointed out and named and the whole life cycle explained. A very hands on hard working dedicated team working hard to allow visitors and up close encounter with nature at it's best.

I don't believe there's a restaurant at the site.
I don't know the specific answers to your other questions, but you can take very inexpensive 'cyclos' all around the city.

There is I believe what appeared to be a snack bar (cool under a thatched roof) where soft drinks were available. I had brought a pre-packed lunch which I ate in the snack bar before being guided around the splendid butterfly center.

When is the best time to visit? When are the butterflies the most active?
Is there an entrance fee?

My friend and I arrived in the early afternoon around 1:00 pm. The fee was $5, but it includes a guided tour and then unlimited time walking around and relaxing in the enclosure. I recommend a book to enjoy, sit peacefully and let them flutter around you. There was plenty of activity because it was very warm.

The Butterfly Farm is on the road to Banteay Srey, and Kbal Spean, if you're going that far.
Banteay Srey is about 30km North-East of Siem Reap. Beng Maelea is about 40km east of Siem Reap. Different major roads and I think you need to almost get back to Siem Reap before there's a quality road linking the two.
