About
Join us at our Visitor Center and experience the realities of humanitarian demining and how we train rats to save lives. You will learn about the mine clearance process from our guides, enjoy a series of videos showing our work and can read all about how Cambodia became one of the most mine affected countries in the world. Every tour is led by an experienced and friendly tour guide that speaks English. Take the opportunity to learn more about landmines, Cambodia, APOPO, and African-born HeroRATs. See a HeroRAT in action! We have designed and built a demonstration area where the HeroRATs will sniff out buried items, scratch at the surface to indicate they've found something to trainers and of course receive a tasty treat as a reward. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

    Massive rats
This is well worth supporting. We booked a tour and had someone take us around and give a demo of the rat with it's very cute little harness on. It was quite fascinating. Got to hold a retired rate Sophia and surprised she wanted to lick our fingers. Great to see what they are doing to help their country and you learn about their work. Have a small gift shop. Tuk tuk ride here was very cheap.

    The amazing livesaving HeroRATS
The Apopo visitor centre is a must in Siem Reap. Chun, our guide, explained and demonstrated the live-saving work Apopo does with the HeroRATS very well. It is important to remind people that landmines still take many lives to this day and let them know how they can help.

One of the best things we did in Cambodia was visit this place
We took our family of 3 teens here today. It was one of the best things we’ve done in Cambodia. We did it on our way home from the temples. Our guide was not only extremely knowledgeable but also very entertaining. He explained how they train African rats to dismantle land mines and how fast they can do it compared to humans. We learnt the whole history of how they are trained and then the rats did a demonstration. It was so heartening to see that there is something making some headway into this tragic problem in Cambodia. Our children were fascinated. Great gift shop too - we all bought something and made a donation. This is a great charity. Highly recommend a visit here.

    Clever hero rats
We were recommended to go here and really enjoyed this one hour tour. The guide was great and it was very interesting. The use of the rats to clear land mines was demonstrated and we even got to cuddle one. Tuk tuk is around $6 return from Siem Reap town centre.

    Most humbling experience ever
We had never heard of the APOPO visitor centre and we are so glad that our Hotel Manager told us about this place. It is entirely funding by your ticket entry fee and donations. The tou goes for about an hour and you get to cuddle a rat, which will change your whole view on rats, as they are gorgeous. The education on the land mines is invaluable and thet make a very serious and devastating event nice. I left hoping I could make a difference somehow which is why I am writing this review. This organisation needs awareness and I believe that you must go there. It is very reasonably priced, it is close to town, it only takes an hour, you are helping save lives and you will have a truly amazing experience.

APOPO - Outstanding Place Doing Outstanding Work
This is an outstanding place doing outstanding work. If you book a tour (and can be as easy as messaging them via Google Maps), they explain and show what the rats do with a live demo whilst letting you read and watch the videos in your own time. You can handle the rat and they appear to be really well looked after even after retirement. Well worth your money to help fund this amazing work…

A must-do whilst in Siem Reap - incredible work being done here!
We are so pleased we had time to visit the Apopo centre in Siem Reap. What an incredible initiative. We all learnt so much from the time we spent at Apopo and it certainly left a lasting impression on our children. The staff did an incredible job of sharing their unique insight and personal experiences, and as for the Hero Rats - WOW! Well worth the visit, amazing work being done here 👏

    Nice family friendly activity
We really enjoyed learning more about the fantastic work that Apopo does clearing mines in Cambodia. It’s a very family friendly experience and lasts about 1 hour, so it’s a good thing to do if you have a morning or afternoon spare in town. Our guide was really knowledgeable, and our boys loved learning about and holding a “Hero Rat”.

I loved this tour! The guide was very informative and did a great job answering everyone’s questions. Watching the rats work and holding one was the best part of the tour and the gift store was very good too!

I never thought I'd say this but I love rats!!
This was such an amazing, different, and unique place to visit. I love that by visiting and buying merch we support such an important cause and land mine detection in a country that has one of the highest rates in the world of maiming and death due to accidental land mine detonation. At the end of the tour which explained how the rats are trained and how the land mines are detected, we got to hold one of the rats working at the APOPO Visitor Center. I almost locked lips with a rat named Dora at the end, and I don't regret it one bit! haha! I learned so much from our visit there, and if I'm ever in Siem Reap again, I would go back just to support their cause again! Such a great place!!!!

Great experience and you are supporting the organization that clears the landmines. Visit on the way to or back from Angkor Wat or just when in time in Siem Reap.

The visit takes about one hour and costs 10 USD.

My Uncle & I visited Cambodia for the first time and after completing 4 solid days of temple visits, we decided to do 1 day of sight-seeing in and around Siem Reap city. I had heard about the APOPO Visitor Center before coming to Cambodia, so I asked our tour guide to bring us here. The admission fee is USD10 per person, visitors are put into groups of 10 to 15 people and the tour runs every hour. The entire tour lasts for 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how many questions your group members have, for the staff, after the demonstration has been completed.

APOPO is a humanitarian organization based in Belgium, which trains giant African pouch rats to sniff out land mines. From this visit, I realised that a number of nations in the world still have serious land mine problems, such as Cambodia. Each year, many of the locals still get seriously injured, disfigured or die from accidentally stepping on old land mines which were buried in the ground during the civil war involving the Khmer Rouge several decades ago. These rats have also been trained to sniff out tuberculosis in some African nations. For me, the highlight of the whole experience was to be able to hold one of those well-trained giant African pouch rats in my arms and have my photo and video taken! The rodents are very clean and well-fed, and they receive plenty of nourishment and tender loving care. Therefore, they are very gentle and adorable!

I highly recommend every overseas visitor to Siem Reap, to visit this place.

The tour is fantastic and interesting and well worth the cost of admission. It is sobering to hear the scale of the landmine problem in Cambodia & globally, but it is great to see how these Hero Rats are part of the solution. Our guide was fantastic, and the search demonstration by Ratana & his handlers was great!

The history and work these little cuties have done was so interesting. The trainers and handlers were so fun to watch. You can tell they love the work they do and love the hero rats. I knew nothing about this organization until I came to Cambodia and loved the experience.

Absolute must see in Siem Reap. A great guided info tour of different land mines, demonstration with the rats, and you get to hold one too.

Very informative videos and boards. Stories from survivors and their communities, stories from farmers that have had the benefits of the hero rats.

There’s a gift shop onsite, proceeds going to the great work these apopo rats do.

This is a fascinating and important place to visit and well worth supporting. The work of APOPO is a vital part of the work to remove the remains of war and protect people and their livelihoods. Animal Welfare is clearly a very high priority and it was so interesting to learn more about the other work that these intelligent animals can do.

I put this very high in my list of things that we did in and around Siem Reap

Such a fun day, seeing the vital work the rats (and dogs) do, including meeting and holding one of the rats. The guide explained everything in detail over 1 hour and there is a good exhibit in the main museum. Definitely recommended if you have a couple of hours free in Siem Reap

Visiting the APOPO centre is just wonderful. Anyone who comes to Cambodia is bound to hear about the horrible results of war; here, we see these funny, cute, clever creatures trained to make a difference. There's a sense of practical optimism here, and the rats are superstars!
