About
Join us at our Visitor Center and experience the realities of humanitarian demining and how we train rats to save lives. You will learn about the mine clearance process from our guides, enjoy a series of videos showing our work and can read all about how Cambodia became one of the most mine affected countries in the world. Every tour is led by an experienced and friendly tour guide that speaks English. Take the opportunity to learn more about landmines, Cambodia, APOPO, and African-born HeroRATs. See a HeroRAT in action! We have designed and built a demonstration area where the HeroRATs will sniff out buried items, scratch at the surface to indicate they've found something to trainers and of course receive a tasty treat as a reward. This is truly a once in a lifetime experience.

This was the absolute highlight of my visit in Siem Reap! The guides speak fluently English and know way more about the topic than anyone could ever expect. The rat-performance was fascinating and the situation of Cambodia was illustrated very impressively! Don't miss out on this amazing and heartbreaking insight into cambodian struggle.

I really enjoyed the tour. I've learnt a lot about landmine situation in Cambodia, how rats are used to detect the landmines and how well the animals are taken care of. The guide was very friendly, knowledgeable and passionate.
I definitely recommend to stop on the way from the temples to the city and see the hero rats.

This is a good stop on the way back from the temples. You get to learn about mines in Cambodia and see sniffer rats in actions. They put one on your shoulders for photo if you want. Money goes directly towards the NGO’s work. Well worth it. Will take you 1h max

New friends that we met on our Emerald Waterways Mekong River Cruise recommended that we “go see the rats” at Apopo for our last day. Of course, I was a little skeptical. But, when we got there, we were completely amazed at these little guys! Okay, first of all… they’re not little! These African rats are as big as a small dog!

The rats are trained to save lives! Landmines from the Cambodian War are still a major problem throughout the country, especially in the hilly countryside where people are still being killed or losing limbs. These rats are trained to sniff out the landmines, and because they’re so lightweight, they don’t set off the mines.

We were treated to a demonstration with Bosco the Rat. They put little leashes on him, set him in a field of sand at Apopo, and he sniffs out TNT! Once he finds the TNT, his handlers take over, dig up the explosive, and safely explode it.

This is a really cool operation that does really great things. Apopo gave me a new respect for these rodents, and their handlers are awesome! They really care for the welfare of the rats by giving them an excellent diet, exercise and enrichment, and plenty of love.

Do not miss Apopo in Siem Reap!

It's an explanation of the situation with landmines not just in Cambodia compared by a demonstration with the rats of how they find the mines. I learned a lot and it's worth going just to support them. They do amazing work.

Really enjoyed our visit to the APOPO centre. The story behind the project with the rats was very interesting.
Rats are bred in other countries around the world to detect land mines. They are sent to Cambodia to be used to find land mines from the war. The project isn’t government funded at all, so relies on visitors.
You get a chance to see the rats in action detecting mines and also lots of information and a video about the project.
A very worthwhile project that I would highly recommend to visit :)
