Our tuktuk driver took us there and escorted us up the hill for a better view. He told us stories of competing empires and took our photos for us. If you're visiting the area and need transportation, I highly recommend calling Sokha (WhatsApp +855 96 673 3644).

After visiting "Angkor Wat", the old gate of "Tonle Om" - commonly known as the "South Gate" - will be ahead of you. It is the most famous entry gate to the royal capital city of "Angkor Thom"! A broad causeway accross the moat leads the way to "South Gate". 108 giant mythological sculptures are lined up right in front of it. On its left side, 54 "Devas" (the "good" angels) and, on its right side, 54 "Asuras" (the "bad" angels), holding on their knees giant "Nagas", whose nine-heads rise, on both sides, at the outer end of the causeway in the shape of fans (only "South Gate" has an almost complete set of sculptures). After the guarding mythical beings, the breathtaking "South Gate", with its beauty and mightness, shows up. A sandstone tower rises 23 meters high and is crowned with four heads, one facing each cardinal direction. The lower half of each head is modeled like an elephant with three heads. Their trunks, which serve as pillars, are plucking lotus flowers. The Hindu god Indra sits at the center of the elephant with an Apsara on each side. Amazing beauty and, no wonder, an incomparable symbol of "Angkor Thom"! Whenever driving through "Angkor Thom South Gate", please do no forget to ask your driver for a quick picture stop, as photos are absolutely compulsory here! Unmissable! Enjoy!

We hired a guide months before actually arriving in Siem Reap and WOW did it pay off. Plus it was a great price for just the 2 of us to be gone 10+ hours. We were doing 2 circuits in one day. Ya we are a bit crazy but we did not have much time in Siem Reap. I chatted with Virak Kao to book the prefect trip for us. He was a delight to deal with.
Our Tour Guide Mr. Khemarin picked us up at our hotel managed to keep away from the crowds almost the day. I was shocked how quiet most places were. Our Second stop was the South Gate to Angkor Tom. it was incredible. It was about 7:30am when we arrived here. There is some really unique carved statues at the entrance.A calming river running underneath with beautiful lush foliage around.
The South Gate is one of the 5 gates that guard Angkor Thom, and is the best preserved of all the gates. All tourists will enter threw this gate. It was built by King Jayavarman VII in the 12th Century. The left side of the road has a line up are 54 figures of devas or gods and the right side is 54 figures of asuras or demons. Both rows look like they are playing tug of war. We walked threw and made our way to Bayon. Temple that opened at 8am.
Mr. Khemarin was the prefect guide for us. He was so knowledgeable and shared stories of life in Cambodia. Also, he was a great photographer! So creative!
Don't forget to have your shoulders and knees covered!

The gate, the balustrade, the asuras and the devas on a single frame against a sunny midday just took my breath away. Angkor wat is at the pinnacle, but Angkor Thom is no less either. I have enjoyed the temples here the most. You just cannot, cannot miss Angkor Thom.

My most favorite entrance to Angkor Thom. The best pictures ever from the bridge with the statues pulling the snake to the water on both sides of the bridge . The gate itself with the four headed Buddha to the Elephants. A must see

Unfortunately I did not get a picture of the South And Main Gate into Angkor Thom as our driver drove thru. So, to prepare yourself, the bridge with the Buddha heads is the entrance so you will be able to stop and get a picture. It is narrow and an exquisite arch going back 800 years or so. Make sure if driving thru to have your driver stop so you can walk thru and get a good close up view of it. Impressive.

A popular stopping place at Angkor Thom is the South Gate which most will enter after visits to Angkor Wat to the south. Built in the late 12th-century and early 13th-century in Bayon style, this is the most famous and best preserved of the major city gates into the Angkor Thom.
What you will find is a 50 metre long causeway which is lined on both sides with a collection of statues, demons on the right side and gods on the left side, both carrying a long seven-headed naga figure. From the beginning of the bridge, you can take pictures with numerous figures holding the long snake. In the back you'll see the multiple-faced gate tower. You can also enjoy close ups of the tower as you approach and enter on foot or in your tuk-tuk or vehicle.
The South Gate is a memorable entrance into Angkor Thom complex and a spot worth stopping for a few pictures, even if the area may be crowded with other tourists these days. Note, you'll find other city gates that are similar when entering or exiting Angkor Thom from other directions. These include the popular Gate of the Dead to the east of the complex.

The south gate is the most impressive of the 5 entrance gates to Angkor Thom.
A grand boulevard of statues welcoming you to the massive site. If you have the time, try to visit each of the other gates, including the Gate of the Dead. All have their own unique features

Overseeing a lake, the most popular gate to Angkor Thom was an excellent diversion from all the temples we have visited for the day. Our tuk tuk driver dropped us off for 5 minutes so that we can take photos. It is definitely a different experience that completed our trip to Angkor Wat.
