We had an amazing time at the Pearaing conservation center, watching at the birds and the faune in the mangrove. We are not birds specialist, but Panith, explained us all what we can see and hear, and had equipment.

Even so, it is just a very peaceful boat trip in the nature, away from the sounds and atmosphere of the city and a good break from the temple.

The way to go to the boat is also absolutely beautiful, with all the rice fields.

Our guides and drivers were especially kind and explained everything about the center.

We highly recommend it!

Our tour guide Samnang offered us a pre breakfast trip to this recently developed conservation area. We were not sure what to expect, but it turned into an excellent trip with around 50 species of birds seen in around 3 hours. The small boat enabled us to see different habitats and great views. It's great to see that conservation work is ongoing and developing and we very much enjoyed the trip.We would suggest that you need a guide who knows the area and history of the site as that definitely enhanced the visit.

Less than half an hour outside the city a set of seven villages have clubbed together to agree on introducing sustainable farming & fishing methods, reducing hunting and totally protecting a 250ha site of swamp forest in the 'headwaters' of Tonle Sap.

It is a great initiative and will need tourism support to build the income - though the reason the farmers & fishers are on board are because they realise it is a necessary step to ensure the long term viability of their incomes.

The birding was a little quiet which was to be expected at this time of year but it was a great chance to explore a unique habitat and inspiring to hear of the community's dreams to return it to what it was in their lifetimes.

Will certainly return in the birding seasons too (also for the sunset which others have told me is spectacular - and the Restaurant, not open on our early morning trip, looks fun).

Felt very challenged when asked to go because I am not much of a bird watcher but it was worth every second. The guide Mr.Lee knew every species of bird that u cud ask him about. The whole experience was great, being in the boat through shallow water, watching water buffaloes n fishes hopping around in the water. We did not get to c much birds except for 2 types of storks, pelicans and herons. Certainly will recommend this trip to nature lovers....take a tuk tuk coz the ride through the villages n rice fields is another different experience. Enjoy.....

We are mid-level birders and were having quite a bit of trouble finding more than a few species in Siem Reap. Pearaing Biodiversity Conservation Center is making headway with the protection of birds in their local community, which will hopefully expand to communities beyond their borders.
Our trip was late November, a time when waters are low and so the boat trip was impossible. Our tuk tuk driver picked us up in Siem Reap and we were met by our guide Sam on arrival in one of the villages participating in the Center’s projects. Sam took us to the local market and educated us on most of the vegetables...what they are, what they are used for and where they come from. Many locally grown. He purchased some delicious rice and banana snacks for our trip. We also toured a local rice and vegetable farm before heading out on our birding trip.
In a space of about two hours we identified 19 species, 16 of which were new to us. We drove dirt roads to get to mostly wetlands and rice fields in our pursuit. It was an excellent morning!
Get out of the city and craziness of temple tours and see the countryside! It is stunning! This experience was much more than birding. We highly recommend it for our guide Sam, the excellent conservation work being done with the local communities, and the awesome scenery!

We had an absolutely magical afternoon/early evening out at the Pearaing Biodiversity Conservation Center. We took a tuktuk out with a very knowledgeable and interesting tour guide. Just the journey out to the centre alone was fantastically peaceful and great to see Cambodian countryside life more. Spotted many interesting birds, before heading out onto the lake in a boat and spotting more as the sun set.
A wonderful hidden gem and definitely would recommend to anyone staying in Siem Reap looking to escape the crowds and do some proper ecotourism.

Pearaing Biodiversity Conservation Center

Siem Reap

After three days of temple tours, we had a free afternoon. I was fortunate to find a fledgling community effort to protect the land and wildlife by developing ecotourism activities.

Another traveller and I booked a last minute tour with the Pearaing Biodiversity Conservation Center. Our guide “Sam” was a volunteer and spoke excellent English. The “do and feel good” part of the tour was that 100% of the fees went to support community projects.

We were picked up at our hotel by Sam and a tuktuk drive. It was a pleasant tuktuk 13km ride from Siem Reap. Also got the way the road got a bit bumpy as they are currently petitioning the government to build a proper road out to their village and the large natural dam that forms the wetland ecosystem.

We spent most of the tour in a small boat moving among the 10 islands formed by the dam. Saw some amazing birds and wildlife. This is a great way to support a local community and take a break from the temples. Recommend going in the morning.

An unexpected and wonderful side trip while in Siem Reap. A trip through the countryside to this unspoiled wetland area was well worth it. Thanks to guide Sam, who did a great job of explaining the initiatives being taken to preserve this beautiful area for generations to enjoy. We went at sunset and it was just LOVELY. Highly recommend

We are birders and choose this activity in Siem Reap. The place is very quiet far to the center, with magic relaxed atmosphere. The total coast per two persons was 68 dollar's including tuctuc (pick us up at hotel 5:30 am, and returned 10 am), guide and ticket for center. The guide was a excellent, he really speaks english very well and he gets a large knowledge about the place and birds.
To be honest, we recommend to hit these experience if you're nature lovers.

An amazing morning birding with the great team at the Pearaing Biodiversity Conservation Centre.

This community driven initiative trains, supports and benefits through direct conservation. Their three missions are to protect and preserve the swamp forest, freshwater fish and water bird habitat and breeding sites.

The community rangers focus on tourism, law enforcement, sustainable resource management and invasive species eradication. If you happen to be in Siem Reap, it is well worth supporting this incredible program.

Our guide Mr. Sok ‘Sam’ Samnang was incredibly passionate and knowledgeable. His English was excellent and the whole half-day experience was really enjoyable.
