We were a group of 5 friends who did a 3 day tour of Salt Flats and Atacama Desert with Ruta Verde. Our driver Jose, from Mundicontact Expeditions was an outstanding driver and wonderful guide, chef and photographer. It was such a highlight of our trip and the accommodation at Salada Salt Hotel and Tayka Desert Hotel was superb. The whole trip went so smoothly, it was so well organised and we were in a vehicle that was very comfortable and did not break down - unlike others we passed. We highly, highly recommend this trip and the company. Memories and photos that will last a lifetime.

Ruta Verde exceeded our expectations. The car was very good, the Spanish speaking guide David was very caring and helpful and always made us feel safe. At one point I needed some oxygen on the second day and he set it up and I felt better instantly . He takes the most awesome photos from different points and he did a time lapse of us on the salt flats. He is a true artist. Communication was easy and Gijs always responded quickly. Highly recommend it and the salt flats during wet season was one of the most incredible and heavenly views we have ever witnessed.

We took a private tour from La Paz to Sajama national park and from there down to Uyuni seeing the salt lake, Laguna Colorada with flamingos, geysers and much more.
The overall impression is that is was a fantastic trip. You will see amazing and surreal landscapes. Small villages, churches with incredible paintings and wall to wall paintings.
But there were some bump on the way, which didn't live up to with we had paid for.
The first two days was in a mini van, which as such was good because there were more space in the car than an 4x4wd. But there were places where the mini van was not suitable for driving, which also result in that we got stuck for ~2 hours in the sand.
The driver and guide didn't handle it well, and only because we took action our self it was limited to ~2 hours.
The other bump was at the last overnight at the Tayka Desert Hotel in 4600m. We had booked and payed for room with heating and hot water since this is in the winter time.
And the night temperature was around -20 degrees celsius.
But heating and hot water was very limited - even electricity. For all 3 area, the setup is that is available between 6PM and 11PM. Outside this interval
there were no heating, hot water or electric. And the heating didn't really worked, we checked the radiator at 8PM and there were still no heat.Luckily we did had headlamp with us, so we could go to the bathroom during the night where there was no electric.
Dinner at 7PM was taken with winter jacket, gloves and hoods. We started with a great soup, but it was served in a plate that felt to be around 5 degrees celsius so the soup was cold before we got started. And so it went on. So what could have been a great dinner ( it was arranged very beautiful ) ended up with something that we just had to finished.
As you can expect the room was freezing in the morning, and as you can see from the picture there were is on the inside of the window.
We knew that it wasn't luxury but when one specifically pays for heating and hot water you expect to get it.

Dear Paz, thanks for the review. We are happy to read that overall it was a fantastic trip! It's a lot of driving but the landscape is fascinating!
Regarding the bumps on the way, make sure that we will work on that.
The Tayka Desert Hotel does advertise with heating and hot water, so we will inform the hotel about your comments.
Despite the cold in the hotel, it is still the best hotel available in this very remote desert area. That's why we book the hotel for our clients.
We hope to see you back one day!

We've just done three great tours with Ruta Verde - camping in Parque Nacional Amboró, two nights at Refugio Los Volcanes, and two days visiting the the Jesuit Missions of San Javier and Concepción. I'd highly recommend all of these trips. In the jungle of Amboró we had an excellent Quechua guide, Julian, who is also a great cook. We saw monkeys playing in the trees and many species of birds. Refugio Los Volcanes is a nice place to relax, surrounded by impressive peaks. There are numerous day-hikes and you have the option of being guided or going alone to enjoy the tranquility. In contrast to the first two tours we did, the Jesuit Missions are a cultural experience. These mission towns feature beautifully restored churches that stand in contrast to the surrounding jungle.
Everything worked smoothly on these trips and Gijs was helpful in deciding what to do. I'd especially recommend these trips as these parts of Bolivia are often missed by tourists. We were the first since the pandemic started to go with Julian and to visit the Missions.
We'd happily do another tour with Rute Verde.

We did 2 days tours to Red Lagoon and Uyuni Salt Flats with English speaking guide Janette and driver Victor. It was definitely one of the most surreal moments to stand in the middle of the salt lake to watch sunset. Janette and Victor are truely the best in the business!

We highly recommend this trip. We did things and saw things that were very special and unforgettable.
All of my communication with Gijs from Ruta Verde was replied to very quickly and all of my questions were answered. It made the whole process of booking from home in advance from England very easy.
We arrived at the airport in Uyuni and our guide and driver was waiting for us. His name was Victor. He was very friendly, fun, spoke a little English and was incredibly knowledgeable about the areas and activities. We were thrilled with him throughout. He made such a huge effort to give us a very special time. He was always offering to take photos of us, he drove his jeep round in circles videoing us as a time lapse and the result was awesome. He set up our lunches out on the salt flats on a big table with lots of delicious food that he had picked up from the town in the morning. When it was sunset, he set out a table for us with wine and snacks and we sat and watched the sunset while Victor waited in the jeep. We never felt rushed, we could do exactly what we wanted, when we wanted.
The activities during the 3 days were fantastic. We did and saw everything advertised. We are still amazed at how much we did and how much we saw. The amount of wildlife we saw was an unexpected bonus!
We paid extra for one night to stay in a nicer hotel, Luna Salada, and it is incredible! I highly recommend it. The second hotel, Tayka, is an eco hotel in a very remote part of the desert and it was ok. They don’t have hot water and the Wi-Fi only sometimes worked and was only accessible from the reception area. Despite that, it was an experience that we look back on with good memories.
Victor dropped us off at the bus station in Uyuni and waited to make sure we found it ok, as we were then travelling in to La Paz.
Victor and the Ruta Verde Tours team made it a very special and memorable once in a lifetime trip for us. Again, we would highly recommend this incredible experience.

Going to the Uyuni Salt Flats was like visiting an entirely different planet with such diverse terrain - and without any trouble thanks to the excellent arrangements by Ruta Verde Tours! From the get-go, Gijs was very informative regarding the tour options, and meticulously considered our preferences (e.g., private transfer, what sights to see, logistical concerns). Even through out the trip, Gijs was very responsive to our needs.
The trip to Uyuni was made even more pleasant thanks to the smooth navigation of our driver Victor Cruz (who took us from La Paz, Uyuni, all the way up to the Andes West Range!), and the very knowledgeable and entertaining accompaniment from our tour guide Paolo Orihuela. Must also say that these two could become Hollywood directors! They directed and captured really catchy and creative perspective photos and videos of us while in the Salt Flats.
Be sure to book your tour with Ruta Verde!

Superbly organized 4-day tour to the salt flats and other areas of interest in southwestern Bolivia. RutA Verde are the ones to book with. Everything went without a hitch in an area that can be very difficult to travel through. Hotels were well chosen: interesting, comfortable (sometimes surprisingly so given the terrain) and well-located. Drivers were friendly and helpful at all times. Elmer, our driver in Bolivia, had a great personality. We had only a little Spanish but with goodwill on both sides we never had a problem communicating. Miguel on the Chilean side also deserves a shout-out for going above and beyond. If you can get your Visa before you go, do that. Border personnel in Bolivia will try every trick in the book to get you to fork over more US currency, and they have all the leverage when you're standing in front of them (that has nothing to do with Ruta Verde of course).

Our experience with Ruta Verde from beginning to end was absolutely incredible. Gijs helped explain thoroughly the different tour options in and around uyuni, and was so kind in answering all of our questions with efficiency, all the way leading up to the day of our tour.
Our tour guide Apolinar (Poli) was on time and ready to pick us up in Villazon after we crossed the border in Argentina. For the next 3 nights and 4 days, we experienced serenity, excitement, unmatched beauty and warmth from the landscapes in Bolivia and the kindness offered by Poli. Poli was a great driver, he helped prepare fantastic meals for us daily, and he was an even better photographer than my boyfriend would have been! Poli made us feel safe and comfortable the entire time, and he showed us so many remote and special parts of Bolivia that we would have never been able to see otherwise. We only know very basic Spanish, but Poli was extremely patient with us and we used google translate whenever we needed to! I am definitely grateful for the Spanish we did know, as it allowed us to communicate more with Poli and learn more about the region we were exploring.
Furthermore, the hotels we stayed in were warm and beautiful, and we had time at the end of every long day to rest, have dinner and get to bed early.
We will always remember this part of our trip. Thank you all for the work you do!

It was 1200 usd for a driver and English speaking guide in June 2019. It would have been 900 usd without the English speaking guide. I thought it was worth the money for 3 days/2 nights. We had Milton and Paulo. I recommend them both.

Bonjour

We want to make a shared tour from Uyuni to San Pedro de Atacama from October 22 until October 24, 2018 and prefer to stay in better hotels with a private bathroom, one night in Palacio de Sal hotel or hotel Sal de Luna. If the guided tour is more expensive with an english speaking guide, than we prefer a Spanish guide because we understand very good Spanish and have knowledge of the spoken language.
Kind regards,

Hi Hugo
You have breakfast and dinner in the hotel. You have lunch while on the tour. When we did our tour , our driver Victor ( who was amazing ) , would stop at a unique spot and we would have a picnic lunch . The food was very good. We would have either beef or chicken with vegetables and salad and pasta. I didn't eat the fresh salad as I was worried about the water purification in Bolivia . So, I just stuck to cooked foods. For dessert we had fruit ( bananas, apple etc) things we could peel. The food was very good but the scenery for having the lunches was even more spectacular. Victor pulled out stools , a table, umbrella for shade and we had real cutlery . It was all very nice.
In Atacama - we stayed at Hotel Pascual Andino . It was a very nice boutique hotel which was very centrally located. Atacama is much more expensive than Bolivia . The town of Atacama is very small. We walked around it in less than 30 min. It was extremely hot when we were there in late Nov. We flew into Uyuni from La Paz and flew from Atacama into Santiago . We didn't do the bus as we were on a time constraint.
Make sure you pack some Altitude medications as you will be going to some high heights. I took the medication but my boyfriend did not - and he felt it.
When I looked around the prices and you compare equally - Ruta Verde was on par with the other companies ( I looked at them all ). Ruta Verde might have been just a tad more but all the reviews were fantastic and I couldn't find one bad one on Ruta Verde. You are going to love Bolivia . If you have time to go to La Paz - we also did a one day tour to Lake Titicaca on Bolivia Hop and it was great.
Hi! How much did the round trip to Uyuni cost? Im backpacking thru San Pedro and want to do this.

We did Uyuni to Sad Pedro ( 3 D/ 2 N) - private tour with Ruta Verde. No English guide and it cost us about $1000 USD per person. To me it was worth every penny but we also got private hotel rooms in nicer hotels ( not hostels ) , got hot running water and heat in our rooms. It was also just the 2 of us in the SUV . We did this trip Nov. 2017
