The cathedral here is of a magnificent scale. It stands high above all else in the area and is very conspicuous with its beautiful architecture and white painting. The interior is very impressive and I would recommend visiting at some point.

One of the must-see in this sun-filled beach resort of Copacabana is this Basilica of Our Lady of Copacabana, who is the patron Saint of Bolivia. A 16th century colonial structure erected by the Spaniards.

We didn't get to stay long as they were cleaning the floors, but the shrines and decorations were stunningly beautiful and opulent.

Some of the cathedral has been recently repainted in bright local colours, which adds an eclectic and boisterous feel to the place. This is very much in keeping with the car blessing ceremonies which take place out in the street, complete with monks in robes and baseball caps, holy water and alcohol, flowers and fireworks. Not to be missed!

This is a very beautiful church and well worth a visit. The altar piece is quite stunning and elaborate, and comparable to the same in many churches in Europe.
The domes reminded me of the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul, Turkey.
The church is located opposite a lovely square with plants/flowers and where the locals seem to hang out. When you are in Copacabana a visit to this church should definitely feature on your itinerary.

We had a lovely time wandering through this old building in very good repair. It was the day of a festival and so the whole church was smothered in flowers. The courtyard area was particularly suited for photographs but as there were signs prohibiting photos inside (which everyone else seemed to ignore) we were restrained in taking photos.

THE COPACABANA ISLA DEL SOL SCAM
I booked a trip in Copabana to visit the Isle of the Sun and the Isle of the Moon with Andes Amazonia. The barely seaworthy boat was filled with petrol fumes and coupled with the constant rocking motion made the 90 minute journey to the first island very unpleasant
We were not told that each island requires a further 10 bolivars to enter. Not that i begrudge that as it is a source of income for the islanders
The biggest scam is a young man who promised a guided tour for another 30 bolivars. When we started, his English enunciation was almost unintelligible especially when he insisted on giving the names for everything in three different dialects which was of no interest to anyone. He then proceeded to race off up the hill leaving everyone behind. When I caught up I remonstrated that as a guide he was responsible for the group. After one hour he left us saying we could make our own way up the hill to look at another part of the island or make out own way down to the Boat. He then disappeared presumably splashing out on an expensive meal thanks to the 20 of us suckers who had parted with the 30 bolivars each.

DO NOT FALL FOR THIS SCAM.
ONE CAN DO THE SAME WALK AT NO COST APART FROM THE ENTRY COST TO THE ISLAND.

I regret to say that the few so called Inca sites would look better in Disney World.
If one wants to see Inca ruins go to Peru.

This stunning piece of traditional church architecture is a must see, and you don't have to pay, which is a pleasant surprise. With a footprint in the shape of a cross, it has a chapel either side of the main church, depending on the size of the congregation. Each of the 3 chapels has an elaborate gold leaf ceiling high relief of religious figures such as the Mother of Jesus, baby Jesus, Saint Peter, and many other saints known by the Catholic faith. The extremely detailed work would be priceless, and there are many huge art works adorning the walls. The ceilings are vaulted, and painted to accentuate the structure. This lovely place has a kind of hallowed air, and I came away feeling a bit emotional. There certainly was a sense of reverence about the place, and one of the works that this church undertakes is a feeding program for children. Well worth a look if you are in the region.

I was a block from this and passed it every morning. If youve seen a church, youve seen this place. Yes,beautiful, but as repetitive and redundant as everywhere else is South America

I've visited so many churches and cathedrals all over Central and South America but this is architecturally unique in every respect of all I've come across. A courtyard with towers surrounds the main church, all of which is white stone washed with really interesting domed minarets. Inside, the golden altar is really spectacular and there are many other works of art to admire. Unfortunately, there's a no photography rule, but since many locals were snapping away, I decided to join in.

The Cathedral is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is small white and worth a short visit.
It front of it, however, there was something unique for the place and unseen by us before: a long line of new cars, decorated with flowers, bottles of wine and beer, some firecrackers, all waiting for the local priest to bless them with holy water - for a good price, of course. Once the car is blessed, the wine or the beer is poured over the vehicle, some of it ends inside of the driver, the fireworks is lit and you can only hope that after such an elaborate ceremony, the owned does not get behind the wheel ....
