I have already attended different spanish classes in the past, but in none of those I have learned as much and efficiently as in the school of Carmen Vega in Cochabamba. The concept of individualized teaching, 4h/per day, rotating teachers every single day, makes the teaching highly effiecient and motivating.
The school offers accomodation in bolivian families, which I can highly recommend, as it is the best way to practice spanish and to get to know the bolivian culture.
After morning classes ( 8:30-12:30) there is still half of the day left to explore Cochabamba city, go for a walk in the beautiful neighbourhood barrio mineras Alalay, spent the afternoon with one's guest family or to just relax and finish homework.
For me every single day (of 2 months classes) of attending spanish classes had been a pleasure. The lovely garden where the classes are held, the coffee breaks, when all students and teachers get together to have a chat, the professional and terribly nice, helpful and fun teachers make it very easy to feel oneself comfortable, a bit like part of a big family.

Summing up, I can highly recommend this lovely spanish school to everyone who wants to combine learning spanish with immersing oneself in the very interesting and diverse bolivian culture and at the same time being sourrounded by charming and hospitable people.

Are you coming to Bolivia and wanting to learn or improve your Spanish? Then I can only recommend Escuela Carmen Vega in Cochabamba because I’ve been a student there for two weeks and it was a great experience!

Carmen Vega has literally decades of teaching experience, and her method of combining Spanish lessons with cultural exchange and lots of conversation worked very well for me. There are several teachers, taking their turn in teaching the students one-on-one. The classes happen in a progressive way, while respecting the students’ pace. In my case, classes took place from 8.30 to 12.30 with a break at 10.30, so the afternoon was free to see the city or just do my homework 😉
The school is located in the Barrio Minero Alalay, close to the Laguna Alalay (which is a great place to go for walks, by the way).

Daily Life and activities
If the student wishes so – and I would very much recommend it – they can stay with a host family in the same neighbourhood, a couple minutes’ walk from the school.
The family provided me with a room, cooked great Bolivian food, and enabled me to immerse myself in the language and culture. Activities with the family or teachers are another great way to engage with and get to know Bolivia, while practicing Spanish.
For example, we did a bike tour through the city, and got to see beautiful places like the Laguna Alalay, Plaza 14 de septiembre, Plaza Colón, el Prado and many more…
One night, us students were invited by the teachers to partake in the K’oa, a ritual that is practiced by many people in Bolivia, an offering to the Pachamama (the mother earth). It’s also a social event, as we sat together, drank tea and talked after the K’oa. It was really nice to be included like this, to get to know the people and culture up close.
Another time us students went climbing at the local climbing gym, which was great fun.
I watched some movies together with the host family (in Spanish of course).
There are many things to do in Cochabamba (if it weren’t for Corona right now…), be it with other students, the teachers or you host family…

I had a great time staying with my host family and could improve my Spanish, thanks to the lessons and the immersion in the Cochabamba city life. In fact, I will continue taking lessons via Skype whilst staying at another place where I finish my Bachelors degree!

Just finished 2 weeks of classes. This family owned school, is very dedicated to its students. Classes are one on one so you get all attention of your teacher but you meet all students during coffee breaks or occasional activities. I had the chance to join a group for the Oruro Carnaval and everything was so well organized with four teachers in charge and it went perfect: We all had a blast and bonded together.
I stayed in a great family that helps to practice, situated close to School in a great neighboorhood.
I can't recommand enough Carmen Vega School for learning and improving Spanish.

I stayed for two weeks to get my rusty Spanish back up to speed and had a splendid time and improved my Spanish quite a bit! I like the most that you get to study every day with a different teacher, the coffee breaks where all students and teachers get together to practice what has been just taught respective chitchat about what happened on the weekend or previous days and the doggis who are awesome. Bolivia has a lot to offer and it is a great way to get to know the culture and enjoy festivities with locals while also learning Spanish in this school!

Thanks for a great time Jaques y Carmen!

Amazing school, amazing teachers.
I really enjoyed my two weeks of classes at the school.
Spanish seems so easy to learn because of the very dedicated team of professors.
So if you want to learn Spanish quickly and enjoy the great atmosphere of Cochabamba the Escuela Carmen Vega is the place to go!!!

I was lucky to find the Carmen Vega Spanish School while travelling in Bolivia last autumn. Carmen and her French husband Jaques and the other teachers at the school are all very helpful and good teachers. You are welcomed as a family member and have classes in the garden. I stayed with a local family, which was a big advantage because then I could practice Spanish when I came home from school. During my stay I participated in a wedding, a birthday party, celebration of All Saints and other happenings. I stayed for two weeks, and in the week-end I went to Toro Toro National Park which was a really nice experience. The stay in Cochabamba helped me a lot in improving my Spanish, and I warmly recommend the school to others! (Guni, 56 years, Zackis mother)

Highly highly recommended. You will be truly welcomed into a wonderful language-learning family.

I did a week off intermediate Spanish in April 2022. Excellent one-on-one language tuition for a very reasonable price, supported by expert teachers with years of experience. Be prepared to take a test on the first day so your proficiency can be assessed, but remember it's there to help you by finding out what you do and don't know so definitely don't stress!

The setting is wonderful too, quiet rooms and garden on the outskirts of cochabamba. I love animals so I was pleased to meet the cat and dog that roam around but if you don't like animals they are easy to avoid.

I stayed with a host family a 5 minute walk away from the school and I think you should too - it gives you much more of a chance to practice your Spanish, and to learn about the culture of Bolivia, as well as getting tips for the best places to visit nearby. If you'd rather sort your own accommodation that's OK too.

Absolute beginner in Spanish and being able to spend only one week at the school in Cochabamba, I started with 30h lessons via Skype. Timing and frequency are flexible and were arranged in discussion with the school. I asked for 2 h lesson per week on a fixed day. However, when I was not available on the planned day, lessons could be rescheduled in advance. Lessons were in the evening, which is handy if you work full time. Obviously, we started with the beginner book, focussing on conjugation, grammar and vocabulary. The content is really well constructed for acquiring the most useful notions of Spanish rapidly. A lot of focus is placed on the verbs, as this is the motor for being able to construct simple sentences. Rapidly, the teacher encourages discussion to apply the theory. These one to one lessons are excellent , as the discussions (in Spanish!) are adapted to your needs, so that in addition to the vocabulary of the book, you will learn vocabulary you will need (in my case for work). Although for organisational reasons I had mostly lessons with Jacques, the teacher can change. At first I thought that this might be uncomfortable, but it is not a problem at all, as the teachers are briefed beforehand on your level and the content of the next lesson. All teachers are really kind and attentive to your learning needs.
After these Skype lessons, I spend one week in Cochabamba with a host family and following 4h individual lessons each morning. There we focused even more on conversation, applying all I learned during the Skype lessons. In additions, you learn about local customs and traditions. Setting of the lessons is in a classroom or in the garden, in a really friendly atmosphere. My host family was so nice (and patient with my Spanish) and my host mum Betty gave me a good start to the day with a nice breakfast, fresh juice, and visited the local marked and festivities going on during my stay with me. After this, I felt much more comfortable working the next week in Cochabamba, as I could express myself and follow some of the conversations. If you have more time, I would recommend minimum 2-3 weeks at the school.
In any case, I strongly recommend this school and I hope I can go back sometimes. Thanks to the whole team and especially my host family.

When I arrived at the school I couldn’t speak a single word of Spanish. I stayed there for 2 months and now I’m able to travel on my own in South America! You can quickly realize your progress and the efficiency of the learning method!
There are several teachers and you’ll have a different one every day of the week. They can speak English, French (and I think German and a few others languages) which is great to ask anything in your native tongue.
Also the school can provide accommodation with friendly Bolivian family which is nice to practice Spanish and to immerse yourself in the daily life of Bolivian people too.
There is a great atmosphere at the school with the teachers and I really liked my stay.
Highly recommended!

I have been to schools in Cuba and La Paz to try to learn some Spanish but this school is the best. You really do not need to look further. I do not give five blobs lightly!

Well organised, excellent 'text books', very good teachers. I stayed with a family who were great; conversation with them was invaluable.

And 1to1 lessons are affordable.
