Not for the directionally challenged

Bear Brook State Park was disappointing as a day hike destination. The scenery was pretty but nothing special. The trails were not marked well. You could tell you were on a trail but not always sure which trail it was. For example, I went up to Catamount Hill-no view just a stone monument. Signage said Catamount pond was one mile and parking lot was 2.4 miles. At the bottom of trail that was about .1 mile long, a sign said picnic area was .9 miles away. No mention of pond or parking. Never found the pond or picnic area. I won't be returning.

Bear Brook X9

We have been coming to Bear Brook since 2015 with our family. Of course last year was a washout with covid, but we were back this year. Nice sites over near the field, the store is close. Kids love riding their bikes here. It was pretty busy, and the weather was so nice. We will be back BBSP!

huge park
Jun 2021
This place is huge, but fairly average. I also didn't find it to be very well marked. However, all the bikers and other hikers I saw there seemed to know exactly where they were going, so it's possible my navigation skills just aren't up to par! (To clarify, it's very easy to tell when you're on the trail, but not easy to tell *which* trail you're on. So you won't get lost-lost, but you might get a little lost.)

All state parks are not created equal, and this one is the definition of mediocrity.

Pros include a decent camp store and some nice walking trails, including the one circling Beaver Pond, which itself is also very nice. The picnic tables were also in good shape.

There are plenty of cons though. The staff is overall very nice, but their lack of knowledge about the park is nothing short of incredible. Prior to our arrival, one staffer recommended a campsite which we then booked, only to find on arrival that it was crap. We drove around the park and found a site that was much better and transferred to that one. Other staffers couldn't tell us where things were located in the park, which led to plenty of wasted time.

The bathrooms were unclean, plain and simple, including the sinks that appeared as though no one bothered to clean them for three straight days. It's a state park, not a Ritz Carlton, but the bathrooms were clearly dirty -- not a good sign any time, and certainly not during Covid times for crying out loud.

You may have read that the park has a kids-only pond for fishing, which is limited to those 12 years and under. On the park's main road, the pond is clearly marked. However, this "pond" is a puny, disgusting puddle which likely hasn't seen a live fish in it for years. You won't believe it when you see it, and the park should just remove the sign and stop setting up kids and their parents for obvious disappointment.

One final thing -- some people prefer some privacy when camping, some don't. Be aware that the campsites here are mainly quite open with very clear views of your neighbors. There are a few exceptions, including Site 31A, but most are wide open.

There are many other state parks that are far superior, and the minuses here far outweigh the pluses here. Time to move on.

Not impressed
Jun 2020
My sister and I just got back from a 3 day camping trip to Bearbrook State Park. Upon arrival, we drove around aimlessly looking for our sight. I don't know if the high numbered sights are newer or what, but there wasn't even a sign indicating where they were. They happened to be up a narrow road that was marked with a sign for Beaver Pond Trail. Had we arrived after dark, or when the camp store closed, we wouldn't have ventured up this trail. There appeared to be nothing but teenagers that worked there, and seemed to only work at the camp store. Not having any info about the shower situation on the website, we asked one of these kids if the showers were open. We were told that they were, and they were quarter operated. Not only did the showers not open at all, but the bathrooms were filthy. They hadn't been cleaned for the first two days we were there, and had run out of soap and paper towels on the day we arrived, the trash was also spilling out onto the floor. They were cleaned only after we went and complained about it. This was ridiculous, especially being the only ammenity they had to offer was soap, water, and toilets. The beach, playground, and store ( except for window pick up) were closed. In light of the Covid situation I found this completely unexceptable. The trails were poorly marked, with rotting and broken bridges and boardwalks. While the scenery was very pretty, overall I was unimpressed with the whole trip. I wouldn't recomend this park, nor will I be returning to it.

The End of Summer 2019
Sep 2019
We have loved Bear Brook for years, and this year visited twice, once in June and this time in September. The weekend was beautiful and BBSP provided lots of fun for our four families. Kayak the pond, hike the trails, explore and enjoy. Sites are great, particularly the ones around the softball field. Building some more great memories.

Bear Brook Camping Trip
Jun 2019 • Family
We have been coming to Bear Brook to camp since 2015 and 4 families have enjoyed camping out in different spots. We chose the spots near the playground this year. There were 13 kids ranging from 14 down to 5 enjoying this beautiful weekend. Lots of bike riding, exploring, hiking and enjoying campfires.

This State Park is year round.
Oct 2018
I have lived near since 1960. We could bike to the swimming beach & snack bar, often. Have cookouts/picnics. There is the camping museum in the CCC historic buildings, & the snowmobile museum across the street. lots of trails for mountain hiking, walking, X-C skiing/snowshoeing, snowmobiling, biking, forest bathing, in-season hunting, wonderful spacious camping ground w/ private pond & beach, blueberry picking. Group educational hikes w/park rangers. My sister loved for years to work in the park toll booth, summer school vacations. Go to the website for yearly activity schedules. Wonderful park, just wonderful.

With kids and friends
Oct 2018 • Family
We did the Catamount trail. Did this hike with our kids and some friends who are avid hikers. It was a lot of up hill and down hill but the scenery this Fall was lovely. We saw a deer, heard lots of birds and enjoyed the foliage. Beautiful place.
