The Douglas county Historical Society is a must see if you enjoy digging into the history of the Alexandria and Lakes area. Once the home of Knute Nelson, Minnesota governor, then Senator, Norwegian immigrant and Civil War veteran, the house he lived in has been restored and furnished with antiques, some that were once originally in the house.
The tour guide is knowledgable and upstairs rooms hold exhibits of military history, schools, and local interest.
The lowest level of the house contains a research library with genealogy files on area families, local history files history files on hundreds of businesses an topics, and researchers to help with your search.

HIDDEN GEM ALERT!!! Out of town visitors should put this on their list! The extremely friendly staff gives wonderful guided tours for next to nothing, making this a great stop for travelers on a budget or with a family. The displays are interactive and changed frequently. Definitely not some boring, dusty old museum! Lots to see and learn for kids and adults alike. Would be a fun place for couples to visit as well. Impressive research and genealogy resources available.

Comprehensive collection of Douglas County memorabilia relating to the early settlers. Farm home moved to this site across the street from care complex also started by Knute Nelson.

We stopped at this house and expected a small tour with a few items but were pleasantly surprised. There are two large floors with great items to be seen. Ann, our tour guide, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the local history. Anyone visiting or driving by Alexandria must see this museum. Their is a small cost of $10 but worth every dollar.
