Big Ole is currently getting a facelift - when we were there 7/7/16, he had fencing around him, was missing his shield, sword and was in the middle of being repainted. If you are thinking this will be a quick stop off the interstate to see one of MN oversized attractions, be prepared to drive through most of Alexandria to... More

Under renovation in mid-June. Don't go out of your way to stop here as Erik looks nothing like his picture above.

Big Ole is one of a wide selection of large statues in west central MN. From Paul Bunyan and Babe, to a giant walleye, to an otter. Ole stands in his eponymous park across from a museum of frontier memorabilia and near a Maritime Museum. The Central Lakes bike trail runs along one side. Weekly farmers market during the season.

Other than a large statue to see, there is little else to do in the immediate vicinity. The Big Ole Viking has definitely seen better days and appears to be in the renovation process. Hopefully he will be restored to his former glory in the near future.

You can take pictures of Ole even from your vehicle. It was a dreary day, so this was a nice distraction. Not really an "attraction". More of a kitchy side trip.

Stopped to take a picture of the big statue. They are currently refurbishing it so there was a small fence around it but could still see it clearly. It is across from the Runestone Museum and in a park so there is no charge.

The statue can be found at the end of Alexandria's main artery, which had lots of stores, presumably for tourists (clothes, antiques, candy) and ends at a lake with a trail. It is all very quaint and worth a stop if you are driving through as it is not too far from the interstate. Across from the Viking there is... More

I stopped to see the statue because it has been at least 20 years the last time I saw it. Was glad to see that they were giving the Big Ole Viking Statue a face/body lift. Hope to come back soon. While there I stopped by Lake Agnes and enjoyed a cup of coffee while overlooking the lake.

Jumped off the highway, and it was surrounded by scaffolding, would of been cool to take a good snap shot - heading to Alaska! BeennowhereDonenothing@ yahoo.com
