Ok, it's not really hidden because it's the largest building downtown, but make time to stop in and browse! This is a wonderful shop with local artists and historic charm.

The Art in the Loft is a one of a kind place. Located in the heart of Downtown Alpena, this year round gallery features both national and local artists, while offering programming for all ages and demographics in our community. Art in the Loft also continues to advocates the arts in our area and how that can in turn impact a community both socially and economically. This is a must-visit place if you come to Alpena that has the BEST view in the city, and all for free!!!

Found this gem on TripAdvisor. The building was very cool. Old wooden floors and a loft-style gallery (dying to know what was up the drop-down ladder to the attic!) They had a decent sized gallery of artwork including drawings, paintings, jewelry, woodwork, glass and pottery. There is also a kitchen for culinary classes (none were going on when we were there though). A great stop when wandering downtown Alpena.

When I was a kid the Center Building was the home of "Monkey Wards"...better known as the Montgomery Ward Co. Today, it has made a wonderful metamorphosis. On the street level is a marvelous restaurant, across the hall a winery that grows its grapes down the road & on the 3rd floor (drumroll) Art in the Loft! This is just another of the secrets we have up here in the middle of no where that we keep to ourselves. Y'see we are a friendly lot but we worry that we might get overgrown by hordes of visitors who discover us & want to live here too! Ah well, anyhow they gutted the top floor down to the bricks & did all sorts of interesting thing. they left the floors as they were. Back in Ward's time they were painted with squares to show where items were to be stored. Very useful, especially in the Christmas lay away time??? You've heard that America's Got Talent? Well we write it as Alpena's Got Talent! Paintings, ceramics, pottery, jewelry, metalsmithing, you name it someone has it & you get to enjoy it. Now you can learn to cook up there. & most fun is you can sit at a table & see over the roofs of the buildings between you & the harbor. What a place to watch the sunrise or the moon-rise or the fireworks! Art in the Loft... just what its name implies. Come & see for yourself.

Art In the Loft always has wonderful works on display, with their summer and winter shows. In between the main shows, they have displays of works from local youth. Alpena has some incredible artistic talent and this is a great place to visit regularly.

They have items for sale from about 30 local artists, a little of something for everyone. Worth a drop buy to view or pick up a souvenir or two.

It is such a nice presentation of some of the artists work in the city. Jewelry, photos, paintings, specialty art plus classes. It was very enjoyable as well as reasonable pricing for the pieces. We'll go again.

What a hidden gem on the 3rdfloor of an historic building in the center of downtown Alpena! Fabulous art and an awesome fundraiser auction complete with a gourmet dinner and an amazing artsy vibe. It's open all the time with classes, local art for sale and much more. Truly a beating heart in the center of a very cool downtown.

Great second floor treasury of affordable one of a kind artistic gifts... one for you, one for me , one for you , one for me ... could have gone on and on and on.
The artistry ranges in size and price. This gallery of art for sale had the most reasonable prices for pretty pieces on the Michigan tour that we had chosen. Jewelry , artistic card holders, paintings, pottery, sculptures and more were in this upper floor one large window plated gallery.
We just happened upon this soul jewel the last day of the summer season but I think it reopens in a few weeks for fall color visitors. Truly a must see in Alpena.
