The park is right on Lake Huron and there is good swimming there. It it sometimes crowded because it is long and narrow.

Great park, but bring your best hiking shoes and tons of bug spray!!

Definitely a bit rustic... We actually made it to the beach (but we ran most of the way to keep from being eaten alive). We didn't spend much time at the beach because it was rather unpleasant (bugs all over the place). A good portion of the beach is simply inaccessible.

We made a point during our last trip to visit as many of the Alpena parks as possible. We were not disappointed!

If you want a nice park that has a sandy beach that isn't over crowded this is the place! Small but clean and very shady!

Thomson Park - swimming beach
Aug 2015 • Couples
I grew up swimming at this beach almost daily. Although it is one of the smaller beaches in town, it is my favorite. It has picnic facilities, a beautiful grassy are with shade trees, and a sandy beach. A great place to meet with family & friends to enjoy Lake Huron.

Great little park for its size!

Thompson Park was the second park of my childhood. Closest to town was Bay View, in the shade & easily accessible when you are a kid and walking from home. Next came Thompson Park. Probably 2 lots wide, but goes from State Street aka US23 S, to the shore. Mostly grass, Nice sandy beach & nice for going into the water. Fairly shallow for families. In "my day" there also was a raft. This stuff about rafts was really important. For a kid to be able to make their way out to a raft, whether by walking, dog paddling or swilling, was a badge of honor. It meant that you are a Bigger Kid! Alas, like Bay View & Mich-e-ke-wis beaches, the city fathers saw fit to do away with them. "Too much of a risk for being sued". Today there is a good size portajohn where you can change, diaper a little one or use the loo. The park has doubled in width with the additon of the old Deadman property. It is a nice clean little park, no frills, within walking distance of downtown & the mom & pop motels further down State Street.

When I came to Alpena in 1964 !
Aug 2012 • Solo
This is my kind of town when you have a park named after you!!! It was in September of 1964 when I came to Alpena as a serviceman in the Air Force! Here was this nice bathing park right off
the main route of US 23 on the shores of Lake Huron at Thunder Bay almost in the middle of down town. It is a quiet place to visit and when the bay water is warm there is alot of action with
family picnic's and young adult's having fun! Alpena is a fun town and alot to see and enjoy!!
