Just finished finding hundreds of fossils with Paleo Joe. He is the real deal! He loves teaching people. When he would find something cool, he would bring it around to show us and give it to us. He did that with everyone! We were able to keep the fossils we found. My teenage daughter LOVED it!

Wear sturdy shoes and bring your sunscreen and lots of water.

Excellent Finds

This is a great family activity. Paleo Joe took us to 3 areas. We started the last site at 1 but you could stay as long as you like. Best part is that you get to keep what you find (up to 25lbs).
My only minor complaint is that he talked about his beliefs of how all these sea fossils got to Michigan but stated them as facts, not theories. Not a huge deal and unfortunately very common these days.
Highly recommend this still, just tell your kids that his discussions are theories, not proven fact.

Did the Paleo Joe fossil dig for the first time this year. It was wonderful and very informative. Showed us many great places to find fossils in Alpena. Joe is a wonderful educator when it comes to fossils. I highly recommend this day trip!

Skip the Tour and Go To Rockland State Park on Your Own
Jul 2015 • Couples
Having been on fossil hunting trips to other states, we were looking forward to our dig with PaleoJoe. We all met outside McDonalds where Joe handed out fossil posters and handouts as he ticked off participants names. No greeting, just who are you and here's this. From the beginning it felt like rush, rush, rush. We hit 3 sites during the day. The first was across from a small state park inside the town of Alpena. Even though Joe said we could pick stuff up with our hands, that wasn't the case as the dirt was rock hard. Take a small pick or other tool to dig with there if you go with Joe. The 2nd site was at Rockland State Park and the 3rd was inside a LaFarge mine where we needed clearance. Of all the sites, Rockland yielded the most finds. If I had to do it over again, I'd go alone and spend all day at Rockland as the other two sites were a disappointment and you wouldn't spend an hour of the day riding around in your car playing follow the leader.
