- Bob AStockport, United Kingdom429 contributionsAbdul Raouf Khalil Museum - brilliant to visit in JeddahI visited the Abdul Raouf Khalil Museum here on my own as part of my trip to Saudi Arabia. I was the only visitor during the entire time I was at the museum. Such as shame as this is a treasure trove of interesting things to see and learn about. The museum is within the Al Tayebat International City complex and is well worth visiting. Its’ is an absolute Aladdin’s cave of things to see and experience, from Islamic beliefs and art through to all manner of historic and cultural items. Spread over hundreds of rooms and with 60000 exhibits you cannot possibly see it all so ask for advice on which bits you are interested in. I was shown around by an Egyptian man Mustafa who works there with his colleague from Eritrea. It's a private collection built up over many years and with exhibits from all over the Islamic world. They opened up rooms for me and turned the lights on, showing me the bits of greatest interest to me. And I loved it. My only regret is that I had not arrived earlier and not seen more. Many rooms are set out like tableau, bringing to life the traditional houses that various people in the region lived in during older times. Fascinating. Lots of the explanations are in both Arabic and English so it is possible to learn about so much. However, there is so much information that it would be easy to get overwhelmed. I was charged SAR80 for entrance and you will need cash. Also, worth a little wander around are the wider buildings in the city complex which show recreations of old a variety of buildings from the region, complete with a mosque. It’s not a big area and will only take a few minutes, plus it is peaceful. Outside the complex is a number of antique shops and places to eat, although at the time I was there they were all closed.Visited January 2020Written February 6, 2020
- grandprixmadSwindon, United Kingdom81 contributionsHidden gem.Blown away by the 4 floors of unique artefacts from the history of the culture and the region. The amount of priceless books and pottery dating back hundreds of years is amazing and a wonderful record of the different regions of KSA. May need several hours if you have them to study the many many rooms of exhibits. Not sure of the opening hours but we’ll worth the 80 SARs for the tour.Visited March 2020Traveled soloWritten March 11, 2020
- veronicamgbLondon, United Kingdom22 contributionsWell worth a visit to Al Tayebat International City MuseumThis is an amazing museum - it’s a maze of different rooms covering Saudi history, architecture, interior decoration, Islamic art from Saudi and other Islamic countries etc etc. It is full of artefacts, is well laid out and clean and just amazing in terms of the volume of content. The staff are lovely and very helpful. The exterior of the museum is interesting in itself. It’s open 8am - 12 midday and then from 5pmVisited March 2019Traveled with friendsWritten February 25, 2020

This collection is truly one of the most comprehensive, bordering on eccentric, that it has ever been my pleasure to visit. The museum offers a massive spectrum of Saudi and other Arabian life, from regional vignettes to philately to calligraphy to fashion to art and beyond.
It is so overwhelming that the two hours that I had planned were insufficient, and I am going to return to Jeddah simply in order to complete my visit to this magnificent museum
I loved it!

This is an absolute must see when coming to Jeddah. This is an amazing humongous museum, with great explanations on the Saudi and regional cultures. The place is enormous, and the construction of the museum itself is very beautiful. You really need more than a day to be able to fully comprehend and assimilate all the information provided. The day that we visited, there were several local school children who came to learn about their culture. This is an absolute must visit, when in the area, and you will not be disappointed.

The beauty that was once Jeddah still alive in this fabulous museum. A fantastic collection of artifacts from the Islamic world and beyond housed in a building that is quite fascinating in itself.
Will be going back as so much to take in.

This is a very unusual and totally amazing museum. A private collection stored in an interesting building. The four floors are packed with artifacts, art and displays depicting the Islamic world and life in Saudi Arabia over many years. The furnished rooms with models dressed in traditional clothes are fascinating. Be sure to find the art work. Modern art (on the ground floor) and wonderful depictions of men on horseback and camels brandishing cutlasses as they head into battle (on the fourth floor). Allow several hours. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the amount of material displayed ..yet there are some great finds in the detail.

This private museum which opened in 1999 now covers 4 floors, and has 365 rooms! (The repro house exteriors are beautiful, but don't have the vibrancy of the real old town .) But the 2nd floor is a MUST for the most amazing collection of regional Saudi clothes and home furnishings etc. Well curated with useful English translations.
Definitely needs a least half a day - 80 SR entry worth it.

Jeddah overall is not a bucket list destination in my view, but if you go, the Tallibat museum is a major attraction. Old Jeddah is in terrible state and you can get at least an idea of what it was like in this reconstruction. This place is very quirky. ......maybe zany. The aim seems yo be to cover EVERYTHING, like an encycolpeadia on steriods. Most of the (300?) rooms are filled with very avarege contents, including what seems like hundreds of Arab themed touristy paintings and caligraphy, but there are also rooms with high quality antiques, for example some fine Islamic ceramics from Kashan and Naihapur and arms and armour. This is not your average museum! I thinks kids would have fun here.

Our compound supplied two shuttle buses with 39 ladies to see this museum. We spent approximately 2 hours looking at several floors of artifacts. This was pre-arranged with Abdulrahman at 050.360.1376 ahead of time. From what I understand, Tuesday is the only day where groups of women can view everything. I was told that Tuesday 5pm-9pm, children and men can visit. Our shuttle buses parked out on the street in front of the museum and we entered through the Medieval-looking gate of the Old Jeddah Wall. We paid 50SR each for the entrance fee. After payment was made we all entered the first floor of the building. We took photos of the amazing Jeddah-style architecture on the way in. Once inside, there were several more men who tried to keep the women in one area of the floor at a time. There are long hall ways with rooms off of the hallways with a theme of artifacts in each one. There is an identifying plaque above each doorway, so you know what you are looking at and the significance. I enjoyed the first floor the most because it was about the mosques, traditional beliefs and rituals of Islam, etc. The hall ways are air-conditioned, but the air has a hard time making its way into the rooms holding the artifacts and so everyone was very warm, but could get relief by walking back into the major hallways. Take a handheld fan to help you feel some air on your face. I will post some pictures so you get an idea of what is held in the little rooms off the main hall way. Another subject I found interesting was on the next floor. One wing of the floor was dedicated to the regions of Saudi Arabia. It had a room that showed the architecture, clothing worn, and art work of Dammam, Riyadh, Jeddah, etc. The detail shown in the underwater room and Western Region of KSA, was excellent, colorful, which made it fun to snap photos. Another area I found interesting were the weapons of the times used. There are photos and actual swords, guns, and chained armor. It made me think of The Crusades. I don't think they were that old, but I can imagine what it must have looked like that many years ago. The top floor seemed like a catch-all floor with current 'everyday' things like mattresses, paint cans, school books, electrical outlets, etc. There is a stairwell for using between floors or elevators positioned at each end of the main hallways.
The tour guide described the mosques, traditions, and rituals on the first floor and we enjoyed his commentary. This was really the only time he shared information to us as a group, otherwise, he moved along with us from floor to floor and we could ask questions one on one. He was a very warm and pleasant man who is eager to answer any questions. He has a very thick accent, so listen actively.
2 hours is not enough time to move through this museum if you were to go into each and every small room, read the commentary, etc. This could take 2-3 visits to accomplish that task. It is very overwhelming with so many artifacts collected.

Let me tell you something, it was not easy finding this place!
I've lived in Jeddah for 18 years and never heard of it but after seeing pictures on the web, I couldn't wait to go and check it out.
I called and sent messages and finally found it. In case you need accurate directions; it's on the 60 street right behind the Sabban furniture store.
Beautiful architecture! You would enjoy it day or night. I loved everything about it.
For single visits, you go on Saturdays and pay 50 SR, otherwise from Sunday to Thursday, you need to go in groups of 10.

I brought my significant other to town for holiday and as a first time visitor to Jeddah, he wanted to do some touristy visits.. so we went to Al Tayebat. We never actually made it inside though because we missed the little sign outside that said that weekday visitors either have to be a group of 10 or more, or the smaller group pays the full price of a 10 person group (50SAR per person for a total of 500 riyals). The only day for individuals to visit is on Saturdays. My usual charm didn't work in getting them to let us in at the individual rate so we skipped the museum since we could walk around the courtyard without having to pay but would have been something nice for him to see on the history of the country. Next time we'll just fly to Riyadh to the real museums...
