The Balad district of Jeddah comes alive specially during the holy month of Ramadan. It is magically transformed into a cultural and heritage centre reflecting the diversity of the Hijaz area of Saudi Arabia. Street vendors of all kinds set up stalls to sell all types of traditional foods and items that are in most cases handmade. A must destination... More

Quite dirty and deteriorated. The oldest buildings date back to the beginning of the twentieth century. Nevertheless, despite overall gloominess, it bears some special Arabian spirit not felt anywhere else in Jeddah.

Old Historic place in Jeddah. Most importantly it refers to our Umm Hawaa A.S. (EVE). It is said that her final resting place is in this Historic Area. This area has resently been declared as UNESCO World Heritage. Shopping is the main attraction of this place.

The old Jeddah area is nice to see, it's nice to go for a walk in the small streets but if you know well the Arab world there is nothing special.

When I heard that the Al-Balad area of Jeddah had been awarded World Heritage status I was genuinely excited to visit it. Having been to other WH sites such as the Alhambra Gardens I thought I was in for a treat. What a disappointment - not a great deal of the original buildings there - apart from some ornate doors....
