Gabel Street is the last bastion of old Jeddah shopping. Don't look for the latest fashion and high-end offerings that have migrated north over the last couple of decades (I do believe that the high-end Gazzaz chain maintains a store in Al-Balad, however. Al-Balad and Gabel Street are what is left of a history of a Hejazi 'souk' - think of VERY warm evenings going from one shop to another in a very bustling environment. If you're in Jeddah and you miss Gabel Street, you really haven't visited this fascinating city.

Gabel Street Souq is marked as Qabel Trail on Google Maps. The souq starts at the Al Amoudi Exchange building and from then on you'll go through a long passage lined with old style shops. There are alleys dotting the passage.

If you go deeper you'll find historical gems like Nassief House and Al Matbouli House. Al Matbouli House was built in 1022H meaning that it is 418 years old! Al Shafie Mosque was reputedly built 1,000 years ago!!

Refresh yourself with freshly pressed sugar cane drinks. There were 2 that I found - one just across Al Dhahab Street and another in front of Al Matbouli House.

In terms of shopping to be honest there isn't much to buy unless you are into traditional perfumery and attires on top of low quality imported goods. However the atmosphere is excellent, especially during Ramadan evenings.

Nowadays we have lots of malls in Jeddah, but back in the days we had Gabel Streets for all thing shopping. It is still standing, and still populated and for me a visit to Gavel Street every now and then is a must as it takes me in a trip down Memory Lane when my late Father used to take me and my brothers to buy us cloth and shoes. I hope I am gonna do the same one day with my child.

it nice old type of market and shopping area also you can get things cheaper then the rest of the city. but for me it not the worth the long trip and crowded road to reach there.

but I'm sure any one who is coming fro western country will love the area.

You can find traditional stores there to buy local products and souvenirs; however, it is a dirty street. I saw at least 3 people throwing their rubbish on the street. It is disappointing!
