My wife and I did a one day dirt bike trip with MotoLao and I can say it was awesome. Laos is as beautiful as anyplace we have been. Seeing it on a bike and riding through the country is an unforgettable experience.
My wife was a bit hesitant as she has never ridden a dirt bike before (plenty of street miles on her KTM). But Chris the manager and Soo (incorrect spelling I'm sure) our guide made sure she was comfortable and she did great. We traveled 200 km on our trip and it was one of the most memorable things we have done.
We would love to take an overnight trip someday with Motolao. Maybe the next time we visit Luang Prabang?
I would recommend that you have some motorcycle experience to really enjoy this adventure. If you have never ridden a tall motorcycle and shifted through the gear box you may want to learn before hand. That would make your experience much smoother>

We booked one bike and a guide from MotoLao (the budget option) for 2 days 1 night trip to Nong Kiauw, and we really enjoyed 90% of it. Amazing sceneries, good bike, weather worked out great for us, all good...except for one thing.
If we'd received from MotoLao a map with our circuit highlighted, we would have gotten as much out of it as we did with our guide. We were quite disappointed that he barely talked to us, never asked us anything, didn't tell us a word about the culture of locals or the mountains and forests we rode through (unless I specifically asked him after I'd realized that was the only way to get any information at all) and at the end of the trip he looked like he just wanted to get it over with. Which is quite disappointing cosidering how much money their tours cost - we basically paid $130 for a map.
Maybe it was us, maybe it was something in our guide's personal life, anyway, just wanted to put it out there as a constructive criticism.

My Moto Laos tour November 3, 2015 was exceptional. Prior to my arrival, I reached out to the company via email and received a prompt reply. The communication of their packages was clear and well described. They emphasize a package that is curtailed to skill and interest level and they delivered exactly that. Upon my arrival in Luang Prabang, one of their team members met with me at my hotel prior to the ride to discuss the finer details. I consider this a personal and professional approach to a customized experience. During this meeting, my background, skill level, and ride expectations of the personalized route were addressed, which I greatly appreciated from a safety standpoint. Two days later at our appointed meet time, I was picked up, met the team who outfitted my ride experience with gear, and met the lady Royal Enfield who ran dreamily. I choose the Royal Enfield 1 day ride and was challenged by the terrain at points although not stressed and enjoyed the experience to the utmost. Xuyang, Rob, and Hardus facilitated a fun ride that I wont forget. I would without hesitation recommend this company to provide excellent service, personalized adventuring, solid ground support, and knowledge of both terrain and machine to my friends and family. Thank you gentleman-that was rad ...Kris.

We actually had a fun time, overall. I was conflicted about the rating because it was so fun, if it was priced 50% lower, it would have been rated as excellent because the trip was fun and the guide was super.
My husband and I signed up for a two day trip that was one of the longer 2 day trips, distance-wise, with a bit less than half off road. I had never ridden a geared motorbike before, and told this to Hardus, but he still encouraged us to sign up. It was hard at first, but our guide was patient and eventually we were on the road. It is mostly riding on flat paths, not much technical stuff, which I guess is good for beginners. I think if I had an more experience I probably would not have found it challenging enough. Our guide was super great, he was one of the best parts. My poor review is not a reflection of his awesomeness.
The biggest problem was the price. At over $200 per person per day, this is the amount that some rural farmers make in a year! So by local standards this trip was way WAY overpriced. We ate cheap food, we stayed at a cheap place, it could not have cost this much. They even said that the bikes only rent out for $50 per day.
The second biggest problem was the poor state of the gear. There were very limited choices of shoes for me. I had to wear ski googles because there was no visor on my helmet. The gear was old, ripped, and very dirty.

I contacted Motolao to enquire about getting some lessons before embarking on an adventure. Thought it would be a wise option.
However to get a response to "Learn before you leave your country" was a very disappointing response (esp when they quoted $100 per day to teach me in their first email).
I understand it is a business, but seriously? Where is the sense in driving away potential customers by being such a DICK??????

I arrived in LPR and met with MotoLao.
I did a days trial with Hnovqabtsistaukoj Lee who is awesome a real gentleman who has an infectious smile. He then introduced me to two of his colleagues,
Xwm Yaj, a real local guide who knows some amazing rides on a couple of occasions he and I left the group and went a little further a field.
Chris who I would always recommend to be your primary point of contact for everything MotoLao is really easy going I booked all of my trips with MotoLao through him. We clicked before the end of the first beer! One of the many highlights of my adventure was when we rode to a war time landing strip where many of the surrounding houses are built using remnants of large artillery.
brilliant guys who I now consider friends.
I booked a 7 day off road adventure around Northern Laos and had an incredible time, I still talk about it more than a year later. (I will definitely be booking again soon).
On some days we would ride all day without seeing a single westerner on dirt tracks, above rice fields, to the tops of mountains where we would Picnic with simple fresh foods sat with the most spectacular vistas. (Thanks Xwm Yaj)
On another day we would be riding up mountain dirt tracks with breath taking views, crossing bamboo bridges or riding through rivers! Stopping at Hill Tribe villages and for photo opportunities along the way. Just Great Fun. (Thanks Hnovqabtsistaukoj Lee)
On one of the days we rode to a grid reference, looking to ride a new route. Once we'd found it, we followed one track through the other side of a village where it just kept getting narrower and steeper, with a sheer drop on one side and mountain on the other. We ended up walking the bikes up on the throttle in pairs until we reached a clearing just big enough to spin the bikes and once we were both at the top we trial rode them down!! And on with our adventure. (Thanks Chris)
The accommodation varied from shady :) to posh. (but always clean)
The food was dependent on where we were. It ranged from sticky rice, sprinkled with chilli flakes, fresh tomatoes and diced cold pork to freshly home cooked Laos dishes (MMMM). You can eat western food but I prefer not to "when in Rome,"
The Laos people are always warm and welcoming. I cannot recommend MotoLao strongly enough. I had the most amazing time.
If after reading this you think that it might be a little too adventurous then contact MotoLao because I am 100% sure that they will be able to cater the perfect adventure to your requirements.
Do not miss this oppurtunity if you are LPR.
Say Hi from me and Ill see you all again soon.

A buddy and myself went on April 2nd. Xue Yang was our tour guide and did an excellent job. He spoke very good English. My buddy had never gone dirt biking and I had limited experience hill climbing. We chopped a few laps around town and then into the country side. The first part of the trip was hill climbing which was near the max of our skill level. A few tricky spots, however the view on top was worth it and there was so many kids. After the hill, the rest of the ride was easier (we asked Xue to make it easier haha). Xue took us to the village he grew up in and we had lunch with his brother's family. Very unique experience. I would highly recommend Xue and Motolao. I would also recommend that you have experience on a bike at a minimum but MotoLao can adjust your ride based on your skills.

My friend and I took the day tour and had the time of our lives. Best ride I have ever been on. The guide Xwm Yaj was excellent! Good for all levels of riding but if you want to go difficult they offer that too. We did and add a bit of rain to the mix and was technical as hell but we had a blast!!! Thanks. Will come back.

Never been to Laos. Never been on dirt. And MotoLao delivered arguably one of the best travel experiences of my life! Chris and his crew were an absolute pleasure setting this trip up. My guide Yae was amazing! Translator, guide, mechanic, wiki. He killed it. I felt totally taken care of by these guys. It was a physical 10 days for sure, but well worth the effort. I cant recommend these guys enough!

We (2 mates and I) just returned from a 4 day motorbike trip with Motolao (in Laos). It was an incredible adventure! We were mostly off road and you needed to be pretty competent on the dirt to do the tour we chose. Motolao, as a tour company / organiser, is fantastic. The bikes and equipment were in very good shape and the bikes in particular very well maintained and fit for purpose.
Our tour guide (Xu Yang) was brilliant. Great rider, good company, great mechanic and terrific customer service. For example, he got up a little earlier each day to adjust and lube the chains and give each of the bikes a check over / tighten up. He also ensured everyone was comfortable and fixed a couple of small breakages along the journey.
We had one significant mechanical issue with one of the bikes which Xu Yang identified at the completion of our third day. Motolao (Chris Corbett, the CEO) arranged for a replacement bike to be delivered to us overnight. As a result, we lost no riding time whatsoever. First world service and organisation!
Laos itself was wonderful. LP is super chilled and charming. The ride allowed us to get off the beaten track and visit remote villages and ride through breathtaking scenery. I'd researched Vietnam vs Cambodia vs Laos before this trip and I feel we made the right choice. It was an incredible adventure in a beautiful country. The people are typically warm, welcoming and happy and the food was great.
Thank you Chris and Xu Yang. I hope to ride with you guys again.

Hi, I have not ridden a Dirtbike before or any manual motorbike. I have ridden the automatic scooters plenty in Laos and am quite comfortable but understand this is totally different! Is this something I could do as a total beginner to manual or would this be best avoided? Thanks.
Written June 17, 2017
I would strongly recommend that you can ride a geared motorbike before going off road. You should contact MotoLao directly and they might be prepared to give you a days instruction on a manual bike and then assess your ability at the end of that day. If they think you are ready to go off road I am sure they would ease you in with a local day trip on dirt roads, hills etc. I hope this helps.
