Shompoo runs a very good service. They have made contracts with all of their professional and experienced captains to retain their services and fidelity. Shompoo owns the long-boats that we ride on, and hires the captains on contract to operate the boat, In return, the captain and his family can live on the boat during their service and are VERY well-paid comparatively to other companies. The captains also agree not to work for any other company during their contract, but none of them want to, anyway. And believe me, it shows. The family that operates this boat, the captain, his wife and their daughter, do such a good job of keep the boat spotless, making amazing food, and caring for us as if we were family, you can tell they are happy to be employed by Shompoo. It is a big, beautiful, comfortable boat, with lots of room to stretch out and relax, tea, coffee and fruit all day, buffet lunches included, and some stops along the way for educational purposes. We had to find our own hotels and arrange all other meals, but it was a nice compromise between living in the lap of luxury or going it on our own in bucket seats. This is riding the Mekong in comfort. And the FOOD! Oh my, if I didn't know any better, I'd swear we were in a restaurant! Shortly after boarding, and getting our itinerary briefing, we are presented with the most amazing lunch buffet - 5 dishes, including vegetarian options, steamed rice, fresh fruit, and all cooked in the galley of the long boat. Everything is delicious, we all go back for seconds, and are absolutely stuffed by the end of lunch. This was the same on day two, so don't worry about lack of food. There's plenty, and its AMAZING. Included in the 2-day cruise(we sailed from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang) is a guide that meets you at the Thai-Laos border, if that is your starting point, and I found this part of the service to be particularly helpful. We were guided through every part of the border crossing and Visa application process, and it was smooth sailing. A comfortable and air-conditioned mini-bus then drove us from the border to the boat launch in Huay Xai, and our guide Vong was with us the whole time. We felt very well-cared for. There are also a few stops on the journey, including a stop in a local Khmou village, to experience daily life along the Mekong river, a stop at the famous Pak Ou Cave and a final stop in Whisky Village, which is probably the most touristy of the three locations. Every time we returned to the boat, we were greeted by the family, offering cool towels and refreshing drinks. And we had plenty of time to relax, read, nap, or play games, in between stops, Most of our time was spent just watching the river, and the people going about their chores on the Mekong. Our second morning was colder in temperature, but blankets were available on the boat, and our guide Vong kept offering everyone hot coffee to keep warm. We also had access to our bags at all time(they are not stored away anywhere, they stay with you), so getting another layer of clothing was always easy - we were certainly never uncomfortable. One last attention to detail: upon our arrival in Luang Prabang, we were offered a final transfer to our hotels, regardless of whether they were booked with Shompoo. This company definitelyprioritizes its clients' comfort and well-being, but also that of the families it works with, and the people it deals with along the river. From the moment I booked my trip with Shompoo, the very last goodbye to Vong and the family on the boat in LP, it just felt right.

We did a two day one night trip with Shompoo Cruises from Luang Prabang to Pakbeng and back to LP the next day. The cruise was lovely. The river is ever changing and settles your heart and mind into a meditative state. Going up river and returning down river we’re surprisingly different. The rivers flies through eddies some minor rapids goes around jetties and the shoreline is dotted with unexpected scenery from sandy coves to lush hills and rugged craggy hills. Not at all what I imagined and exceeded my fantasies. The Shompoo boats were lovely well maintained and spotless. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was delicious. We learned so much about Laos and will come back again. We loved it so much. One of the best experiences of the many adventures we’ve had.

Great trip, the boat, the food, the guide and the side trips were very good. Special mention to the lady that did the cooking, the lunches were probably the best food I have had not only in Laos, but in the whole of Asia in 6 years of living here! Really good food, much better than expected. The boat was in great shape and the trip was delightful and utterly relaxing. Bring a good book and float!

If you like relaxing in gorgeous scenery, book this! This was one of the more luxury bookings on our trip through SouthEast Asia. The boat was beautiful, staff kind, and lunches onboard were delicious. Our guide, Sammay, was warm and wanted us all to feel like family. The stops along the way broke up the hours onboard, but I just loved cruising more than any of the stops. If you like doing a whole lot of nothing someplace gorgeous, book it. If you’re restless and bore easily, I would not recommend.

We were very hesitant about taking the cruise (due to the great price difference compared to the regular boats) but after this experience I can only recommend others to go for Shompoo. Our guide Sommay, the captain Buloe as well as all the staff were great! We especially found Sommay a charming guide that was always very willing to help us and always with a big smile. The food was very nice and they even made some special vegetarian dishes for me. I would greatly recommend this cruise to everyone!
