- Raintree_ThailandBangkok, Thailand4,282 contributionsA feast for the eyes and the mouth!!We've been to hundreds of markets in Asia and seen a lot of interesting and amazing things, but the sheer percentage of unusual foods in the Luang Prabang Morning Market takes the cake! There's no market we've been to that we so frequently have to stop and ask, "What's that?!" Even for seasoned Asian travelers, there are dozens or hundreds of items in this market you won't recognize. Thankfully, most of the vendors are very patient in trying to communicate to wide-eyed visitors what the various items are. And, if you have a bit of adventureous spirit and a few thousand kip, you too can sample bee larvae grilled and smoked inside their honeycomb nests, dried Mekong river weed, grilled rat, dried buffalo hide, barbequed frog, or fried crickets. For the less adventureous, try some coconut pancakes, grilled sticky rice, or a simple bowl of noodles.Visited January 2024Traveled with familyWritten February 5, 2024
- DotsGirl2Vancouver, Canada452 contributionsLocal market with some handicrafts as wellWe liked walking through this market and watching locals shop. Everything is fresh. They even have live chickens and ducks. We found this market less crowded and more spread out than the markets we saw in Cambodia. It may be because Luang Prabang is a much smaller city then the places in Cambodia. We also found the goods and handicrafts to be of good quality. We really enjoyed our walk through.Visited February 2024Traveled with friendsWritten February 13, 2024
- Shelley MAlbany, New Zealand905 contributionsGood spot for breakfastWe walked through the market after watching Alms Giving. Nice place to have some breakfast with a lot of options available. Some unusual things here which we had no idea what they were and a lot of locals. Nice to see how fresh their food is with all the fish and fruit/vegetables available.Visited March 2024Traveled with familyWritten April 15, 2024
- Viet Exquisite TravelHanoi, Vietnam193 contributionsAuthentic local market - worth a visitThis bustling and vibrant market is located right next to the Mekong River, in the alleyways off Sisavangvong Road. This morning market is where locals go for their daily groceries, fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, poultry, fish, and flowers. We enjoyed exploring this market and seeing the people as they shopped. Everything is fresh. You'll definitely find something to buy from this market but act quickly—it closes at 10:30 AM. Enjoy yourself!Visited June 2023Traveled with friendsWritten April 17, 2024
- LolaGo1Washington DC, District of Columbia6,632 contributionsBought several cheap and delicious foods here!Located in front of my hotel, I visited the vendors here right after my breakfast. Most of them are selling local delicacies such as small pancakes, deep fried pork chops, sweets, items wrapped in banana leaves, spices, etc. They are all so cheap rnaging from 10 to 60 kips or abt. $.10 or $2.50. They also sell fish, meats, vegetables, fruits, some jewelries and clothings. It also has small restaurants where one can eat their delicious offerings. Also noted here are hotels and a small Buddhist temple. Highly recommended to visit.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 19, 2024
- annminkyUnited States3,937 contributionsYes Indeed, It’s a Morning MarketSuch a nice walk right outside Luang Prabang Residence. After breakfast, I had my morning walk exploring the morning market. So many interesting things to see such as fruits, vegetables, fish, sweets, handicrafts etc. I bought a sword here only to be confiscated at the train station. LOL!😂. Vendors were all friendly. A nice foreign guy let me taste one of his purchased coconut pancakes. It was good. You’ll also see snails, crabs and frogs for sale.Visited May 2024Traveled soloWritten May 11, 2024

This is a 'real' market for locals to buy their fruit and vegetables and not a tourist show.
All manner of things, some recognisable, others not, are on sale. We walked here after the alms giving procession before returning to our hotel for breakfast but, had that not been the plan, I'd recommend trying some of the street food as, from the locals consumption, it must be pretty good!!
Highly recommended

This market can easily be found near the royal palace.Best to take a walk here after you have witnessed or participated in the monks alms giving ( no need to take a tour). It I sent a huge market but nonetheless worth a visit to see the stall holders huddled over their camp fires / barbecues cooking all manner of things, stalls selling huge fish ( cat fish) , frogs, open air butchers, flower stalls, dried buffalo skin crisps, Mekong dried river weed , a few bad and sarong stalls.Half hour / to 45 mins is all you need

The Luang Prabang morning market isn't huge, but it's very well organized and clean. I've been to hundreds of Asian markets and have to say this is one of the best. Beautiful, fresh produce with vibrant colors. Great variety of fish of all sizes. Interesting meat section. And loads of interesting and unusual food items (e.g., fried buffalo skin, crickets and silk worm pupae, frogs, unidentifiable fruits and vegetables). Great place for photos. And the vendors are generally very polite, friendly and tolerant of goofy foreigners.

The best way to understand any culture is through a visit to the local markets. This morning market was a fabulous way to meet locals and see what is available on the Loas dinner table. While the fresh fruit and produce was luscious, the real interest lied in the grilled meats. Anything the moves, flies or crawls can be placed on a stick and put on the fire. The usual fare was available including skeweered beef, pork, sausage, chicken and fish.... But it was the unexpected and unusual grilled "stuff on a stick" that captured our intertest. Grilled sparrows and other little birds were available. Also on the menu was grilled rodents and squirrels. The snakes and scorpions were present and they were either grilled, fried or placed in the local liquor called LaoLao for flavor. The morning market is the time to sample the grilled meats. They are all fresh and grilled on the spot. If you wait to eat the grilled meat or fish at the night market, freshness cannot always be guaranteed. The fruits were wonderful and there was quite a variety to choose from. It was an adventurous culinary tour and highly recommended way to see local culture and foods. Eat at your Own Risk!!

What time should I get to the morning market to see the monks shopping?
Written October 25, 2017
we were there about half past eight and it was just the ordinary local people shopping. I hadn't heard about the monks coming here.
