I'm usually sceptical about organised tours, but the Myanmar Upper Land day-tour in Mandalay (including Sagaing, Amapura and Ava) came recommended to me by a colleague and I didn't regret it for a minute. The day was perfectly organised and traveling during the Monsoon season meant that we were a group of only 5 people. Our guide was lovely and very flexible. When we wanted to visit another monastery in Sagaing, she made it possible without hesitation. The price is also good - a private car for a day would be more expensive.

We started at 8.30am and arrived back at the hotel at 6pm. Full day of visiting all the most important historical sights and handicrafts around Mandalay. Unfortunately it was cloudy so we didn’t get a good sunset from Mandalay Hill but it had wonderful views over the town.
Be prepared to take your shoes off a lot during the day as you visit the pagodas and temples so I would recommend wearing thongs and of course modest dress to avoid having to put extra clothing on each time.
Highly recommended.

Firstly I booked this tour for 3 people in August. The price on the website was $US32 pp. We got on the little mini bus for 6 guests and the price was $US18pp but we now had to pay extra for the ferry boat, horse cart and lunch. There was confusion among the passengers about why the prices were different and if people actually had enough cash (no credit cards accepted) to pay. Then we had a full day confusion for an American couple who had paid online but the guide was harrassing them to pay cash. They were asked questions such as "but where is the money?" The American couple were distressed, everyone became part of this situation. It was not good.
Like other reviewers we did not get the history and detail we needed from the "guide". Our mini bus had trouble every now and then starting. We were told to be back at the bus by 5pm at the U Bein Bridge. So while other people got to see the sunset we had to return to the bus only to find the "guide" went off to do something else while we waited.
Then to add to our misery we took one and a half hours to get back to our hotel because the "guide" was still trying to sort out whether the Americans had actually paid online (they had a receipt from the Myanmar Upper Land company). The saga ended abruptly when the company decided they had paid.
We left at 8am and arrived back at the hotel at 6.30pm.
The sights are good. The mini bus wasnt, the "guide" was incompetent.
My advice - find another company and DO NOT pay online. Note how many reviews this company has for 12 months and think about it!

We had a really great experience visiting the four ancient cities of Mandalay on this tour. The sites that you are shown are truly spectacular. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable about each site and Myanmar’s history. We were taken to a great restaurant for lunch which served delicious food. I would definitely recommend this tour to others who are visiting Mandalay.

I am a solo traveler booked for the trip Ava- Sagaing- Amarapura one day trip one month previously but it said minimum two persons could make it. But they accepted me at last as an only customer served with 3 professional and considerate tour guide, driver, server and one 22-seat middle bus under same one person price: USD 32!!!!!!
The trip was great and well planned combined bus, shuttle boat from sagaing to ava and horse car in ava town. The scene was really great at Ava and of course U-Bein Bridge. Once u visit Myanmar, be sure to go one day tour around Mandalay and with Myanmar Upper Land Tours.

We were planning a week trip to northern Myanmar, Mandalay and Bagan. While everyone know Bagan, there is not a lot on Mandalay out there. I had the lonely Planet guide book and this company name was in it. I checked it out on it’s own page and the tours for Mandalay were endless. So many choices for a place many say to skip. We did 2 full day tours. The one above and the next day to Mingin. We had an excellent guide that was always watching out for my wife and an excellent driver.
Mandalay should not be just a place to fly into. Or to spend a night. It’s a destination itself matching any in south east Asia.
I would recommend them totally. Prices are great. And when you deal direct 100% of the money stays in Mandalay. Booking was a snap.
They also drove us to Bagan and took us back to Mandalay airport for a very reasonable price. You might get it for a few $s less but the luxury Crowns are well worth the roads.

My daughter and I went on this tour in July. It was a great experience; we saw many interesting sites, and it was very nice to get back into the air-conditioned car in between! Our guide was wonderful and gave us lots of information and insights about Myanmar history and culture as well as daily life in the present day. I was very sick with a respiratory infection the day we were scheduled for the tour and they were very kind and understanding, and fortunately were able to reschedule us for the next day. I highly recommend this tour company.

The comfortable minivan arrived on time with a driver and the very eloquent Ms Pa Pa as my guide. There is a lot of ground to cover but I feel that I saw most of the really important sites around Mandalay. Very pleasant lunch was available in Saiging and not at all expensive. We duly ended up at U Bein bridge for the obligatory sunset pictures. Incidentally Ms Pa Pa was an excellent photographer and always seemed to know where the best photo spots were. This is quite an expensive day out for one person but is definitely worth it for the places seen and the information provided. I woulsd certainly recommend this company if you are in Mandalay.
