You can drive up or you can walk up many stairs which takes up about 40 minutes. The stairs are pretty dirty as the whole hill is a bit run down get rather dirty feet when you walk. It seems to be the place to be suggested for sun set in travel guide so it gets crowded just before sunset. But the sunset is lame, the sun disappears above the horizon in the cloud of dust and smog whih covers Mandalay. The pagoda on the top is not very beautiful so Mandala hill is overrated.

This a very big hill, which I'm glad not to have had to walk up, although you can if you want to and people do. I got driven right to the door and that suited me!. The hilltop is covered by a great big temple complex, of course, very sparkly with lots of glass mosaic. It's a good way to see a 360 view of Manadalay and I suppose, take the ubiquious sunset photos.

If I come again, I would love to ride an ebike up to the hill.
Otherwise you will need to climb up god knows how many hundreds steps up.
Due to my hubby's sole injury, option B was a no no.
Luckily there's option C.
Which is to use the lift facility up and down.

The glow of the setting sun's rays onto the facade of the temple itself was splendid.... A golden shimmer.

But the icing for coming here is the 360° panaromic views of Mandalay.
And a golden orange vermillion horizon to dream off.

This was one of our favorite things to do!. What a long way up the "hill" - more like a small mountain. We sat with some novice monks in the building at the top - they had walked all the way from the city, up this steep incline to see the gorgeous sunset. They also come to practice their English with foreigners. Charming! The vistas are beautiful Get there early...it wasn't horribly crowded, but we chose to sit on benches with open space looking out rather than go to the very top of the structure. Really, do go!

1,729 steps per our cab driver Tun. We drove to the base of the entrance, and took three escalators to the top; 1,000 kyats each. Great 360 degree views from the top to take pictures. Don’t forget to take pictures of the two enormous Lion statues at the southwest entrance. Beautiful pagoda/temple, but surprised by the trash thrown over the side of the temple walls.

We climbed Mandalay Hill after 4pm to see the sunset. We just stopped short of the summit as it was crowded with Chinese tourists vying for places to take pictures of each others. The climb is moderately hard due to the heat but well worth the effort. Take water with you and take it easy and you will be rewarded with the sight of Mandalay below you and hundreds of tourists taking selfies in the most bizarre poses. Once they took the said pictures they hurried off somewhere else presumably to take more shots, leaving the rest of us to enjoy the sunset.

Mandalay Hill is the one of the highlights for tourist to end their one day sightseeing by watching over panoramic view of Mandalay and sunset. It is 267 m high above sea level. It was used to be the strong hold area of the Japanese Military during the World War (2). In the evening, these are many people to climb the hill for exercise.
Thanks.

Very busy at sunset. The drive up wasn't too bad, our guy parked and we went up on the escalator, three long flights, to be met by people selling the foreigners access ticket for 1000k. Westerners arguing about this seemed ridiculous. You've spent 000's to travel and are arguing over 0.60 cents.
Anyway, the view was nice if you were there 30 mins before sunset for a front line position on the 100 metre long balcony. Sunset was fine, but is it worth the fuss?. No. We were there three days so had plenty of time, I wouldn't cut short a day at more interesting pagodas for this. The escalator reverses to get you all back down again.

We went up the hill on our hired scooter, the journey up was quite a ride. We got to the top paid to see the temple, walked around a bit, not really what we came to see. The temple is a bit..... over the top i guess is the phrase I’m looking for especially after seeing Bagan. Anyway we came for the sunset and we left before it set as the crowds are a bit overwhelming, so we drove down the backside and found a perfect spot to watch the sunset.

The hike up the Mandalay hill was very interesting. There is roofing over the steps, making it a comfortable hike, especially when it is hot or raining outside. But please be mindful that there are a lot of steps (for those who don't like steps or hiking). We came across a number of friendly locals and monks along the way. There are several stops along the way where you can see large Buddha statues and little halls before getting to the top. There are also many tiny shops with vendors selling T shirts, flowers and food for the pilgrims (there were a couple of astrologers too), but surprisingly nobody hassled us to buy anything (which is a common theme across Myanmar and I loved it!). At the top, the views of Mandalay are absolutely amazing! And the pagoda and its architecture was just stunning. The place wasn't crowded with tourists or locals (in fact there was hardly anyone around), which was a bit surprising, but welcoming. A must visit!
