The Sandamuni pagoda in Mandalay supersedes the Kuthodaw pagoda as the world’s largest book. Like the nearby Kuthodaw pagoda, each ‘page’ is a marble slab about 170 x 110 cm, inscribed with instructions on how a Buddhist should lead a moral life. Each slab is housed in its own temple or shrine. There are 1774 of them arranged in a grid around a central stupa. It is an impressive sight.

Opposite Kuthodaw pagoda in similar style with many white pagodas dotted around the main pagoda. What is particular about this pagoda is the massive cast iron gold coloured Buddha reputed to weigh 18,000 kilos. Personally I preferred the exterior many white pagodas.

Built in or about 1874 under King Mindon Min as a memorial honouring his younger brother, Kanaung Mintha, who was assassinated in 1866. One large golden pagoda, and a field of smaller white-washed pagodas. Well maintained grounds and gardens.

Although there is a temple here, what I loved the most was that it held the world's largest book. They stand upright, they are set in stone and look stunning. There are 730 leaves and 1460 pages; each page is 107 centimetres (3.51 ft) wide, 153 centimetres (5.02 ft) tall and 13 centimetres (5.1 in) thick. Each stone tablet has its own roof and precious gem on top in a small cave-like structure. Each stone has 80 to 100 lines of inscription on each side in round Burmese script, chiselled out and originally filled in with gold ink. It took a scribe three days to copy both the obverse and the reverse sides, and a stonemason could finish up to 16 lines a day.
It was quiet and peaceful here in the early morning and I would return just to soak up the ambience of this incredible place.

The world,s biggest book is a a series of engraved stone tablets , each of which is housed in a small construction of its own . The pristine rows of of white structures is striking and interesting but soon eclipsed by the memories of many more striking pagodas as you tour around this wonderful country full of gold crowned pagodas and gleaming gold encrusted buddhas.

I loved this place since the rows of nearly identical pagodas housing scripture of Buddhist text create a very unique look compared to most all other temples in mandalay. The exception being next door kuthodaw which makes visiting this pair of temples a convenient must. Go early so your bare feet won't get too hot wandering around Shoot pics in panorama mode and get some with the temples on nearby mandalay hill in the background.

I believe this is pretty much the same thing as Kuthodaw. It contains marble slabs but isn't as accessible like Kuthodaw. There are gates blocking the alleys to see the individual Slabs. Plus it's not even the original "Largest Book". Just go to Kuthodaw.

When King Mindon made new construction of his palace in current site , this Pagoda place is temporary palace. During Palace rebellion of 1866 , Crown Prince Kanaung assassinated on this spot. Inside of Praying hall , there has beautiful Iron Buddha Image that is brought from Amarapura. " Sanda " means " The Moon " and " Muni " means " Image " , So Sandamuni Pagoda means the Buddha Image looks like Moon.
Around Pagoda Complex , there are 1774 Marble slabs that is written down on it by Pali & Sanskrit to all of Buddha Teaching consisting of Sutta , Vinaya , Abhidhama , Commentaries and Sub Commentaries. All these Stone Slabs were donated by U Khan Ti ( Hermit ) in AD 1913. It's next to Kuthodaw Pagoda ( World Biggest Book ) & It's one of the best spot to take the nice photos with many stupas and Mandalay Hill.

There are a lot of white stupas here, place is nice. We went an hour before sunset and were almost the only ones there. Liked our visit!
