About
Thonezepay village is not far away from Mandalay but due to limited transportation , it is very isolated and not developed in may sectors but this village is really worth to visit and not visited by tourists yet.By visiting this village and learning how to cook Myanmar foods with local , you just support local community and create jobs for villagers. If you are wiling to share about your life experience with local people when cooking and enjoying meal , this is the best place and villagers are very keen to learn from you. After cooking class and village sightseeing , you may have a chance to visit to Mingun where you could see the world largest bell , unfinished huge pagoda and Myatheintan pagoda. Enjoying sunset on the boat in Irrawaddy river would be unique experience.

My wife and I took the boat from Mandalay and were greeted by Lin's father and an oxcart which took us to his family's home for lunch. His parents are lovely people. We have been to cooking class around the world. This is not your slick and witty tourist cooking class. It's more like you are in your aunt and uncle's kitchen helping out. You are not going to master Burmese cooking here, though you will understand the food and cooking style. It was a lovely experience. My wife help cook. Lin's mother and some helpers did a lot and we communicated through hand signals very little English. No problems. I sat with Lin's father, drank some incredible Burmese "moonshine" and watched the women cook and figured out how to joke with each other. The food was very good and plentiful. Afterwards, Lin's father took us around the town and got a sense of life in this village. It was a just lovely experience. We met and talked to local villagers and saw a glimpse of their daily lives. We arranged this and most of our stay in Myanmar through in's travel agency LM Travel Myanmar They did great.

Our family of four had an amazing visit to the Thonezepay village. After arriving via the beautiful Irrawaddy river on a private boat we were greeted with openness and friendly smiles and transported via traditional Ox Cart to a local villagers home. Immediately we were made to feel welcome and comfortable and had the luck to meet the gracious Mr. Lin and family who had arranged our Magical Myanmar experience. The adventure of being in this untouched town was topped only by the food we were offered at lunch. We will never forget the array of food presented to us, each dish, explained to us by the local chef, was excellent. Our only regret was not having large enough stomachs to eat it all. This was a truly special experience for our family and we highly recommend it.

This is a must-eat experience. Myself, my wife, and two young children could not stop eating. Course after course of amazing, interesting, and delicious food just kept coming out of the house where the local ladies where cooking.
We felt so fortunate to be able to be part of this activity and our many thanks to Lin for not only the dining experience, but also for what he is doing for the local people in this area.
This is a definitely something that any off-the-beaten path traveler or adventurer must try.

Dear Greta
Thank you so much indeed for your great review and recommendation on our service. Me and villagers are very happy to know that visiting our village and having lunch is a highlight of your 40 days trip through Myanmar. Our village is small , isolated and not visited by my foreign visitors yet but we are rich in cultures and traditions. If visitors are tired of temple visits and like to see real Burmese ways of life , this village would be the best to visit and learning about how to cook real Burmese food would be a great fun. So i am sure many upcoming travelers to our village will feel like you.
Best Regards
Lin

My husband and I had a wonderful time at the cooking class. It was one of the highlights of our trip in Mandalay and Myanmar as a whole. We felt like it gave us an opportunity to understand the culture of the Myanmar people, and partake in their daily lives. We enjoyed going to the busy market and purchasing ingredients for lunch. Our guide explained many local fruits and vegetables, taught us about common spices, and pointed out local delicacies like palm sugar candies. After the market we took a riverboat to the tiny village of Thonezepay. We passed people fishing, villages along the water and saw other riverboats. An oxcart picked us up and we headed to the village to start our cooking class. We picked vegetables from the garden, and helped prepare and cook the food. The villagers were friendly and welcomed us with smiles and appetizers. We learned how to pair spices with different dishes and learned how to cook over hot coals. I was impressed by how clean and organized the cooking class was, they even gave us recipes so we could prepare the meal in the future. After lunch, our guide took us around the village by oxcart to see the school and the local health clinic. It was a tasty and heartwarming experience. I highly recommend the cooking class!
