These students really have their art down...they seem to have been working for years, but at the most 2 years since that is the length of this program that is totally free (scholarships) for those who are accepted. 5 stars for them! But, the music was godawful loud. The sound would be more appropriate for a 1,500 seat theater rather than 12 people sitting less than 30 feet away from the speakers. And, there are several times when there was absolute screeching. Take ear plugs or hold your fingers in your ears...truly too loud. And, we're from Music City - Nashville, where concerts can get pretty loud.

Thank you for your observations. Today we discussed music volume for school performances. We do agree that the volume should be pleasant for the audience, and we are upset that the music detracted from your enjoyment of the show. This will change starting this evening. Please reach out to us on our Facebook page so that we can thank you properly. We always want our visitors to enjoy their time with us. On a positive note, we are happy that you enjoyed the dance. The kids do work hard, and they enjoy the evening performances.

We found this show on trip advisor and decided to go at the last minute and the show lasted one hour and involved local performing art students demonstrating around 10 styles of traditional Myanmar dance and incorporated comedy also .
We recommend any tourist in Mandalay to go and see this show the students are so talented and will end up famous dancers in the future!
Also this is a non profit organisation which means all proceeds go back into the school!
Truly a magical experience we will never forget

We are so happy that you enjoyed the performances at the Mintha Theater of the Inwa School. Our students work very hard (academics and dance) so that they can spread their love and knowledge of classical arts and support their families and communities. Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. Please follow us on Facebook, and feel free to contribute any photos you might have taken.

Excellent performance by students of this non-profit for performing arts. They have a show each night 8.30-9.30 pm and the tickets are 14000kyat (around $9 now), which is a symbolic support of a wonderful enterprise, providing boarding, food and education to dedicated kids willing to learn traditional Burmese dance, a dying art. We bought a ticket from our hotel, I guess they are widely available, just ask.
The kids are so sweet and you can take photos and talk to them after performance. They need all the support they can get and you will really enjoy the show. Do not miss.

We are so happy that you enjoyed the program. We are just as happy that you stayed afterwards to chat with the students. Language skills are an important part of their overall educational development, so casual speaking time is extremely valuable. Please consider liking us on Facebook, and feel welcome to share your photos. Thank you for making the effort to write such a lovely review.

We loved our evening at the Mintha theater, and fascinating and entertaining show featuring traditional dance, and traditional music of Myanmar. Some were dramatic and story-telling, some very funny, some very athletic. The venue is small and informal, and the musicians were very willing to chat about their instruments and demonstrate (fun for me because I'm a musician too)
One thing, the theater's address is correct on this tripadvisor page, but is pretty far away from the address listed in the most recent Lonely Planet (dated July 2014), so be advised and be prepared!

Thank you for your detailed review, Judy! The orchestral part of the theater is called the 'saing waing.' There are many different components, and they create a sound that is truly unique to this country. As always, we'll pass along your praise to the kids and the instructors. Performers love to know that they have entertained.

That was our second night in Mandalay and we couldn't dream of a better thing to do. The show was great, explanations were concise but meaningful and everyone was just smiling. This is the kind of atmosphere you want for this kind of local activities, which allow old cultures to live on, by the way.

I can only recommand travelers (or anyone actually) to see one show. And don't hesitate to speak with the students and teachers afterwards, they're very lovely!

The Inwa School has multiple objectives: We teach to preserve and promote classical Burmese dance as it has been taught for many generations; we provide our students with the skills to support themselves and their families as they assume more responsibilities; and we want to give them a solid academic background so that they can function in a changing world. Obviously we want them to be happy, healthy and secure. It is lovely that you picked up their happiness when you attended our program. That means a lot for all of us. Thank you for such a lovely review. Please consider following us on Facebook and Instagram to stay in touch.

How wondering that you were inspired by your time at the Mintha Theater. Traditional Arts Culture here is vibrant, but seriously endangered. We want to entertain, but also educate and give Inwa School students a path forward. Please consider liking us on Facebook. We welcome your thoughts, criticisms, and of course, photos, any time.

Eight enthusiastic performing arts students, supported by their tutor plus a five piece orchestra provided a varied and energetic performance for just over an hour that was well worth a visit. The school depends on donations to keep going and it was sad that there were only very few people in the audience on the night that we visited.

Thank you so much for supporting our school and encouraging others to do the same. The theater will be closing soon corresponding with the Myanmar academic year, so we are happy that you were able to see a performance during our last week. Some of our students will be traveling abroad to regional arts workshops, and others will be returning home to visit their families during the next few months. All will be celebrating Thingyan, which is the raucous water festival which welcomes the new year. Thank you for your encouragement, and for taking the time to review us in TripAdvisor.

My friend and I had read some very good reviews about the theater so we decided to go and see the show.
When arriving at the place we got to see this cute half outside kind of stage that they had there. We got nice vibes and the students of the school were preparing themselves for the performance. I was very excited to see what they got.
The show ended up being lots of local music and dance as expected. It was interesting to see what the local dance and music was like and in what kind of athmosphere the students were studying and performing basically every day. To be honest I wasn’t personally extremely impressed because the show was a little bit groggy and the dancers lost their concentration many times and started giggling with each other which was a bit awkward.
Overall it was a fun experience and I think it was a valuable thing to put some money into. In my opinion it’s important to support local activities and education overall and I could recommend the teather for tourists who want to learn something different about Burmese culture.

Thank you for taking the time to review us. First of all, everyone associated with our school would like to apologize for any lack of seriousness that took place on the evening you attended. We want our students to enjoy their craft, but that should not translate into a lackluster effort. The skills they develop during their time here translate into vocations to support themselves and their families. We encourage creativity and expression while they are with us, but not during what are choreographed, traditional performances. I don’t know if you are still in Mandalay, or have plans to return to Mandalay. We would like to invite you for a return performance now (Burmese school year ends in mid March) or in the future. Please feel free to contact me directly at tbergreen@gmail.com. The kids have been reprimanded, but in the sweetest way imaginable.

An amazing show. This school has been set up to give some of Myanmar poorest kids an education while teaching them traditional songs and dances to keep Myanmar culture alive. The joy on the student's faces while performing is wonderful and that, along with the beautiful traditional dances are well worth the ticket price (which goes back into funding the school). Congratulations to the students, teachers and Manager on a fantastic job. A great night of culture, while helping a wonderful school. I really recommend it.

Thank you, melindaryoung. The joy is actually real! The kids love performing, and our program is designed to give them an arts study/academic study/play-leisure balance. We could never regard our program as 'successful' if the kids didn't love what they are doing. They appreciate the significance of maintaining tradition, and their instructors ensure that there is authenticity and continuity in the performance. We'll try to put up more candid videos and photos of class and leisure time on the website and Facebook page. Please come and visit us the next time you find yourself in Mandalay!!!

It was an outstanding experience to see authentic Burmese dance performed up close, and really evocative to see the same characters that you see on the pagodas made alive in a dance performance. I love that Mintha Theater is both a school and a theater, and supports young people in expressing their heritage!

Dear Newslang, The performances are 'the real deal.' Thank you for noticing that!!! Obviously the role of the school is to create a new generation of traditional performance 'Masters' in a country where the traditional means of passing along knowledge and expertise has been distracted by external influences. Please do come again!
