The main attraction of Alexandria . This is called Qaitbay Citadel . There is no lighthouse now. It is a middle age fortress built on the bank of Mediterranean sea. Very well maintained establishment indeed. Entry fee was 60 Egyptian Pound for adult and 30 for students and locals (2019).

We visited the place and I could imagine having seen documentaries the great wonder of the world it was as explained by Ibn Batuta and other travelers of old times. But place could have been kept better and we were discouraged to go the castle as I understand it is empty. They can create a magic with technology/films/ 3D experiences. Egypt has many lost opportunities. Wish they they can make up.

The lighthouse isn’t actually there any longer, however there is a fort where it once stood. It’s actually a very beautiful spot in spite of it being so crowded.

While now a restored fort, I was hoping for more information of the lighthouse. Whether by fame in lore or estimation of current historians/scientist would have been interesting to assemble with the fort restoration.

Awesome Citadel. This place is beautiful and has amazing views of the library and city. Lots of neat history. Lots of stairs that are uneven, so may be hard for some to climb inside. This is a must see and on top of my list for places to see. Vendors outside can be a bit pushy.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria that was part of the original Seven Wonders of the World is gone but it is cool to say you were where it once stood. The view of the Mediterranean is lovely but beware you must overlook the garbage. There are piles of garbage everywhere so that is distracting. Also, do not buy anything from the peddlers in this area as they are all cheaply made souvenirs that are mostly plastic (unless cheap, plastic souvenirs are your thing!)

If you came to Alexandria hoping to see the famous lighthouse, the Citadel of Qaitbay is as close as you’re going to get. This 15th-century fort was erected on the exact site of the famous Lighthouse, which was once considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. For many centuries it was one of the tallest man-made structures in the world. The lighthouse functioned until the 11th century when a severe earthquake occurred in the area. The bottom portion survived but later only served as a watchtower. Then, in the 14th century, there was another very destructive earthquake and the entire structure was completely destroyed. In 1994, French archaeologists discovered some remains of the lighthouse on the floor of Alexandria's eastern harbor.

How can you rate something that doesnt exist? The lighthouse was destroyed a long time ago due to earthquakes and the Qaitbay fort has been built on the same area instead.

The ancient lighthouse was completely destroyed by earthquake. Muslims use the rubble to build the citadel directly over the site. The only remnant is a tiny floor mosaic from the original building. I wish they provide a model of the lighthouse or some historical facts about it. After all it was one of the 7 ancient wonders. Very disappointing.
