This memorial looks like it could be somewhere in Europe. Information about it is rather conflicting. Some sources claim it was built during the rule of Mohamed Ali that ended in 1848. The monument looks younger though. Others claim it was built by Italian residents of Alexandria to honour Ismail Pasha (son of Mohamed Ali) who ruled until 1879. Anyway it was renamed after Nasser took power in 1952 to honour unknown fallen sailors.

Alexandria used to be an important naval base from which Ismail Pasha organized big military operations among others against the Greek independence movement. During this time many Egyptian marines died while fighting. Tragically it was not during battle for a just cause.

The Alexandria Unknown Naval Soldier Memorial is dedicated to unknown soldiers who lost their lives in sea battles. It was originally designed as a memorial to Khedive Ismail (Ismail the Magnificent) but was repurposed after the 1952 Egyptian Revolution to commemorate fallen naval personnel. The memorial is located on the Corniche, so you will likely see it without even trying (we passed by twice). A touching tribute to Egyptian seafaring history.

This is a scenic monument by the Corniche in central Alexandria. It's a fitting tribute to unknown naval casualties and makes for a nice picture in daytime and and night. It's a 5-10 minute attraction, basically the time it takes to walk around a take a few pictures.

A magnificent monument to those brave souls who protect us. Guarded by soldiers who dutifully perform a respectful ritual to the fallen.

The memorial to the Unknown soldier is a beautiful monument along the Alexandria Mediterranean coastline. This can be visited while taking a stroll along the beautiful and romantic Mediterranean coastline of Alexandria; right in the heart of the city; and quite near the impressive Great Library.

This monument can be visited only from out and it is very difficult to stop in the busy streets and see it carefully.
It is a dedication to the soldiers who lost their lives at sea.

A nice memorial in the middle of the Corniche in Alexandria. It is worth stopping and getting up close to see the excellent carvings. A nice contrast in the middle of a busy city.
