- Robert ORotterdam, The Netherlands6,453 contributionsWhere Alexandria city meets the MediterraneanWhat is called Corniche in Alexandria is a promenade, highway and some small beaches along the harbour bay and coastline of Alexandria. From the Mamluk fort (west) to the next pier towards the east it is over 4 km in length, but if you walk all the way to Stanley bridge it is 9 km. To reach the promenade you have to cross the 6 lane highway with heavy and very loud traffic, which can be hazardous. Toxic pollution from exhaust fumes is perhaps less of a problem, as there usually is a breeze from the sea landinward. During Ramadan just before, during and right after idfar it was much calmer and enjoyable. People have their meals on terraces, on the promenade margins or on the beach (where accessible). The 19th century buildings lining the highway are an interesting sight as well as of course is the Mediterranean sea. A welcome change would be to turn the western part of the highway into a pedestrian zone. It is almost a dead end road anyway.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten April 29, 2024

Good for a stroll, or to stop at a restaurant. Guys who want to sell you stuff will try to stop you. You can also see it from a cab.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 7, 2024

The way the traffic is, it's highly recommend to walk along the many miles of the corniche to get around.Visited October 2024Traveled with friendsWritten October 22, 2024

It’s a beautiful landmark in Alexandria. It’s amazing to walk by at by day or night. Usually there are lots of people late afternoon to the night. There are several cafes that have a good view and get a coffee or tea, you can even order food. Or you can just pick any spot on the small wall along the corniche and enjoy the view without go to a cafe if you don’t want to.

If you visit Alexandria, you should walk Corniche from the center to the edge (ex lighthouse).
We ve been in Alexandria during Ramadan this year ( April 2022) and as we walked this road we had the opportunity to see how local people celebrate Ramadan. After the sunset this road is full of people eating and drinking tea. It was the only time of the day that the main road was not full of cars and buses. Scenic view until you reach the lighthouse and walk all the way back. 🙂

The Corniche is the footpath.roadway that runs along the eastern and western harbours in Alexandria. Well above the water you get an excellent appreciation of the harbour and it’s strategic significance.
On the rocks below the footpath, fishermen using very long fishing rods and short lines were tempting the small fish of the harbour.
As we walked, we we able to try the food and drinks from a number of outlets - be tempted!

The corniche offers beautiful views out over the Mediterranean Sea and the Alexandrian coastline (when it’s not too smoggy from the air pollution). However it’s totally overcrowded and the noise and fumes from the nearby traffic is quite overwhelming. Beware of the men who are unashamed of their blatant staring. The pavement is in disrepair, and can be hazardous if you’re uneasy on your feet as some of the older members of our group were. This could be such an amazing attraction for both locals and tourists alike if a bit more care was taken.
It’s still worth experiencing so I would recommend going for an early morning walk around 6:30am - at this time it’s much less busy and you’ll even get to catch the beautiful sunrise!

The Corniche is a waterfront road that runs for 10 miles through the heart of Alexandria. It stretches from Qaitbay Citadel, on the west end, to Montaza on the east. Lots of activity here – plenty of restaurants, cafes, and beaches make it the perfect place to people-watch and soak up the atmosphere. This is a major traffic corridor, so unless you are walking, be prepared for major traffic delays. The good news is that since the Corniche runs along the Mediterranean, you will be able to enjoy beautiful sea views while sitting in traffic. And the Corniche is the perfect place to watch the sun set (unfortunately we watched from the car).

The Corniche has wonderful views of the Mediterranean along its length. We stayed in the Four Seasons Hotel as part of our two week tour of Egypt. We had amazing views from our room. We ate lunch in one of the restaurants that lines the Corniche. The traffic was very heavy but I did not let that prevent me from enjoying the beauty of the Mediterranean.

Must visit place in Alexandria. You can see an amazing view of the sunset from the corniche side. There are several cafes and restaurants with sea views just take a rest there for a couple of hours and enjoy the view of the Mediterranean sea. The weather is very nice and I am always excited to come back again.

We stopped here to take pics only - did not get to do much exploring. But the road looked lovely! One side had shops/restaurants and the other had the Mediterranean Sea! One can also see the Citadel at Qaitbay in the distance!
Would have loved to visit in the evening and walk around.

I went for a morning run here, having first checked at the hotel that it would be safe. It might be an o.k place for a morning stroll but definitely not a place to go running, even when dressed conservatively in track bottoms and t shirt. The pavement is uneven, there is heavy traffic and passing cars honk at you and pedestrians stare at you. I would avoid this place for running and not even pleasant for a walk die to the traffic. Stick to a hotel gym which is clean and safe.

Just across the street from our hotel this is a very interesting place. My friends and I walked a distance and then sat to watch the people. I feel like we got a good sample of the locals of Alexandria. We even saw some men fishing. It has a broad expanse of walkway, so even though there were many people, there was plenty of room to walk. The only disappointment is that there is no public place to swim in the Mediterranean.
