Beautiful church. Guide Linus (if I can remember correctly) explained all the history of the church and city and showed us around the church. Really knowledgeable guide. Very interesting stories and details we would have otherwise missed. Highly recommend visiting!!

Excelent place , very neatly organized , visited on 3/09/2023 . Simple ticket was 2 euro , if you want to climb the tower you have to pay extra . Located in the center of Sibiu , it is the most grand church in Sibiu . Lots of history and a lot of people buried there . If you log into the network of the church and scan the QR codes of the funerary stones you can read about the peole there (including a son of Vlad Dracula ) . Highly recommended for history lovers . I would visit for more than 2 hours .

The interior stays cool on hot days and is peaceful and quiet. The church itself is much like many cathedrals though quite a bit less ornate than most. The tower climb is fun and fairly easy compared to some other cathedral towers. It probably won't cause most people to feel stress from the height. A fun thing to do while in Sibiu.

The main tower of this impressive cathedral, completed in 1520, is 74 meters tall and used to be tallest building in Transylvania. The cathedral actually features five pointed towers, so the visitors may not understand how tall the main tower is, until they take the stairs all the way to the top. Although the stairs are steep, the views worth the effort. Not only the rooftops of all the buildings in town are visible from the tower, but also the green hills around Sibiu and even the Fagaras mountains in the background.
Another important attraction of the Lutheran Evangelical Cathedral in Sibiu is the gigantic fresco (over 9 m high), painted in 1445. The mural shows the Crucifixion and marks a transition in painting from the coldly late Gothic to the more human concern of the Renaissance. Below the fresco are depicted Hungary's two first Christian kings: Stephen, shown with a scepter and Ludovic (Louise) with an axe.

The church in Sibiu invites you to visit. Centrally located, it's worth a visit, a visit because of the view from above. The climb is not for people with a fear of heights, but for them there is the opportunity to discover a lot in the church (until those who are vague about the climb are back). Taking a look into the church itself and looking around inside is worthwhile for visitors of all ages.
When you reach the top you will be rewarded with a view over Sibiu - definitely worth the climb!
The tip would be to enjoy the view so that you are neither ascending nor descending the tower when the bell rings.
Personally, I wouldn't go up the tower with smaller children because it's a bit wobbly/adventurous.

This church is one of the more important sights of Sibiu. From outside it is a cool castle, but from the inside it is a bit boring. The highlight for me was that there is was a guide walking around to give information to people and you could ask him everything. He was very informative and nice and you understood the church better.

The most impressive church in Sibiu - I mean Cathedral - I've seen a few ... and even if most people are praising a certain warmth and beauty of the orthodox churches and cathedrals, I would disagree ... none that I have seen compete with the gothic and baroque masterpieces of the Catholic/Lutheran/ Evangelic cathedrals ... the orthodox belief was somehow tolerated during the communist regime in Romania - other religions were kind of "semi illegal" ( and the tolerance towards the orthodox church had it's roots in the collaboration between the Securitate - secret police of Romania in those time - and the clergy) - but enough of the recent Romanian history lesson ... back to this impressive gothic architectural piece.
It was started in 1300's and was finished somewhere in the 1500's ... It contains frescoes from the 1400's ( just take a look at the fresco near the altar depicting the Crucifixion).
Also if you take a look to the organ - the largest to date in Transylvania - has just a bit in excess of 6000 tubes!! ... I just imagine how that would sound and what a great experience would be to hear some classic tunes played on it.
Also you can see here an organ salvaged from the village of Slimnic - and the plaque explained how it was refurbished - somebody stole some tubes from it in 2017 ... weird thing.
The churches tower is 74 m high ... making it the second tallest church in Lutheran church in Romania after that in Bistrita - the story goes that the Saxon representatives visited Bistrita and measured the church tower height using a rope and having the intention to build a taller one in Sibiu .. they were guest of the Saxons in Bistrita - spend the night there and left for Sibiu - between their measurement and the arrival to Sibiu the measuring rope got shorter with a few meters - so even they wanted to out do the height of the church in Bistrita - due to the "faulty" measuring item the church tower in Sibiu got 2 meters shorter than the one in Bistrita that goes up to 76 m. (Legend to be complete says that the inn keeper in Bistrita cut a few meters from the rope that the people of Sibiu used to measure the height of the tower).
Overall a great place and definitely a must see when in Sibiu - entrance fee is 15 Ron - if you want to see the church only , and 25 if you combine it with a visit in the tower - or 10 Ron if want just to climb the tower ... being very hot outside we skipped the experience this time.
So go and see for yourself, it is definitely money and time well spent.

It's located in Huet Square and its architecture is impressive. You can visit it for a small fee and admire the interior, the unique organ and see some burial places of famous locals. Worth spending some time there.

Anyone who has traveled to Sibiu can tell you that the Tower of the Lutheran Church is probably the town's most important landmark. I've visited Sibiu many times, and when I'm driving through town trying to get to the main square, it's always my guide. The Church was built by Saxon settlers in the Gothic Style, and is a rich example of the Evangelical Saxon Churches that dot the Transylvanian landscape. The tiles rooftop of the steeple can be seen almost all over town, and the little square the Church occupies is a quiet place from which to contemplate the magnificent architecture before venturing inside.
The Church boasts a beautiful and well-preserved knave, complete with wooden pews, painted altarpieces, and beautiful carvings. There is a small room containing tombstones to the back of the Church itself. Many of these are fascinating, having been decorated with fanciful carvings including skulls and cross bones, mythological beasts, and Biblical scenes. The Church's tower may be climbed for those who don't mind walking up a few hundred steps and who aren't afraid of heights. The view from the Church tower is magnificent.
The Sibiu landscape and town is defined by its Saxon heritage, and it would be a great omission for any tourist to miss visiting this most important Saxon landmark. Between mid-August and late-May, it is even possible to see the snow on the Southern Carpathian mountains which flank the city. Whether you climb the tower or not, however, don't miss visiting the church itself. It is probably the single landmark in Sibiu above all others which is not to be missed.

Does anyone know the opening time of the tower? Is it the same as the church? Some websites (e.g. patrimoniu.sibiu.ro/biserici_en/evanghelica/53) say it "may be visited on demand". Thanks.

Same time than for the church .. no need for a guide ... bring the map in office tourism in order to know what you'll observe. Have a good time.
