You can walk or drive up to the Monastery - we drive to avoid the many vendors on the way up. Once there you enter a beautiful setting with magnificent frescoes. It is a functioning community do the monks are visible and active. Please be respectful when you enter the church in terms of your dress and behavior -- the... More

I sleept there for a night. It was suposed to have room with toilet but two weeks before I arrived I was told that they can't provide that kind of rooms because they are making remodolations in the monastery bur that we (I am part of a group of 18 persons) will have toilets in the corridor. We accept the... More

Great drive up along the Chaya river. You have to stroll up through a market to the main entrance of the monastery. The site is pretty well maintained and has been going through major renovations. Main cathedral was quite well restored with plenty golden accents. The frescoes are worth seeing. It is still an active church and it is full... More

Very commercial place. It isn't a real any place of the peace. Before the Monastery are different shops and pubs with terrible music.

Got the bus from Plovdiv which took about 40 mins. Walk up the hill to the monastery is about 0.5km. Plenty of tat stalls and grilled meat eateries on route and some scabby dogs too. Monastery is pretty chilled and a nice place for quiet contemplation. Some interesting trees too. Good way to pass a couple of hours.

You can get there via public bus, after which it's a small climb up the hill. Very peaceful with a lovely church and some great frescoes.

We went on a day trip from Plovdiv, taking a bus and visiting Assenov's fortress, then the monastery. The place itself and the area are quite pretty, but there's not much to do, and overall we stayed at the monastery for just about 20 minutes. The problem came after: we had to wait for an hour and a half for... More

Very nice place in the mountain, very touristic place. Many people go there for the weekend. There is a river and it restaurants next to it with panorama. You can eat very good "skara" there!

The monastery is beautiful, and I strongly recommend shelling out to see the old refectory (~6 leva) and the ossuary about 300 meters outside the monastery (~20-40 leva). The curator was our guide to the ossuary, spoke excellent English, and was very knowledgeable. The church is also quite beautiful, and undergoing extensive restoration of the frescoes. Finally, the monastery abuts... More

Amazing drive up through steep canyons with trees and river. We parked at the bottom for three leva and strolled up through a market to the main gates of the monastery. Main cathedral was quite well restored with the shiniest golden accents I've ever seen.
