This is the oldest church in the city. It stands on the site of the massacre of 40 Christians of Plovdiv, committed in 304 under the Emperor Diocletian. Of course, now we see a modern church built in 1832. The most remarkable part of it is the bell tower, consisting of five tiers. Surrounded by a high stone wall, the Church of Saints Constantine and Elena is considered the most beautiful in Plovdiv. The murals in the church were made by the famous Bulgarian artist and icon painter Zachary Hristov Zograf (1810-1853). This is a monument of religion, history and culture of the city of Plovdiv, which must be seen with your own eyes.

Sts. Constantine and Elena is a three-nave basilica, containing a gilt iconostasis, completed in 1836. It is the oldest Orthodox Church in Plovdiv.

Its magnificent Baroque carvings feature two rows of icons (small portraits of saints) made by notable artists of the Renaissance.

Icon Gallery:

In the courtyard of the Church, there is the Icon Gallery which holds a collection that dates from the middle of the 15th to the end of the 19th centuries, mainly from southern Bulgaria.

It was restored in 1832, together with the equally famous Church of St. Nedelya, both granted special permission by the Sultan Abdul Aziz.

I am not much into churches. However this one I find charming and beautiful.
Located in the Old Town , it adds to the magical atmosphere of the area. Gorgeous inside, with enchanting court yard.

the church is located on the Acropolis, it's on the way to Nebet Tepe; it's easy to identify, following the tower bell, but it's a little bit strange to find the church behind a tall wall
the place has a long history, starting with the martyrs of 304, then with the first church build there, 30 years after
the nowadays construction has been erected in 1810
the church has unusual but beautiful frescoes, and a very nice interior, with a Baroque iconostasis
a must to see in Plovdiv

Lovely frescoes at the entrance welcome one to the grand place of worship. Contributing to the grand facade, in addition to the elegant and ornate white tower belfry.

Richly embellished, the interior is striking. A marvellous iconastasis is the divider between the between the priest and congregation. Gilt and paintings make it an awe inspiring sight.

Predominantly in a dark azure hue, the lined ceiling has some holy images and impressive suspended lighting.

This is a small, tranquil and beautiful church in the heart of the Old Town in Plovdiv, hidden behind a high stone fence. Very impressive murals and frescos both inside and outside, an ornate altar.
It is believed to be one of the oldest churches in the city, originally built in the 4th century over a pagan temple, destroyed and rebuilt several times until the nowadays church was built in 1832.
Taking photos inside is forbidden.

The inside of the church is another wonder of Bulgarian art with magnificent frescoes and icons. The church is hidden behind walls but easy to find because of the detached bell tower rising fairly high in the old city. Well worth a visit.

Very nice old small church in the heart of old city. It is holding lots of wedding ceremonies, so you can find a lot of happy newly weds and dressy people around. You can walk in the small yard or go inside the church to admire the beautiful decoration.
