Grandiose, you can take photos from the street looking towards here. Right below, there are beautiful houses. The House of Nikola Nedkovich is located here. Above Hisar Kapia is also the Ethnographic Museum

Yes, Hisar Kapia is a gate, part of Plovdiv's defence system, etc., etc. IMHO, it is of a several spots that make the Plovdiv Old Town to be a very special place not just in Bulgaria, but world-wide. We suggest that you stopped near Hisar Kapia for a few minutes and just look around. It is a very special place, indeed.

'Hisar Kapia' is the Turkish word for 'fortress gate'. While now in the middle of the so-called 'Plovdiv old town' with its mainly 19th century Revival houses, this was once the eastern gate of the former citadel, the Akropolis of antiquity, the Hisar of early Ottoman times.
Built of stones and bricks the rather small gate probably dates back to the Second Bulgarian Empire (12-14th century). When later, in the days of the Pax Ottomanica it wasn't used as a gate anymore it fell into disrepair, but was restored, when wealthy merchants were buidling their mansions all around it. Now next to it is the grand Koyumdhzioglu House, which actually serves as the city's Ethnographic Museum. On the south side is the SS Constantine and Helena Church, also a construction of the 19th century Revival period. Near it a section of the old fortress wall can be seen, together with the foundations of a round tower, all probably from the days of the Byzantine emperor Justinian the Great.

This medieval gate is the passage to the old town. It's made of nice brick stone and is a part of the old town so you will definitely see it if you pay close attention.

This Gate was my entrance in Plovdiv and it prepared me for what is going to see in this City. I was impressed with the picturesqueness of this point! It's a stone arch (2000 years old) that was once the Eastern Gate of the Citadel of Philip of Macedonia. It is located right next to the impressive house of D. Georgiadis (built in 1848). When I passed the Gate, I found myself in Ulitsa Saborna, a small central square of the old town, where there is a picturesque souvenir shop. And then, my wanderlust in Old Town of Plovdiv just begun.. ✿

One of the three main entrances to the city. Its foundations are from Roman times. The place is very famous and has been reproduced on souvenirs, paintings, postcards - ideal for a photo of memory.
Located in the Old Town. One of the city's main attractions.

A little out of the main shopping area in the old quarter you come across some amaing little streets, houses and bridges as you wander up to Nebet Tepe remains. Well worth a wander, there are lots of little craft shops and some ancient Roman/Byzantine walls as well
