We were taken up here as part of a Mostar war tour. The view from the top is spectacular. Its worth it to go up there just for the view. As part of the tour we were on, we learned about the positions of the Serb army and how they surrounded and bombarded the city from the top of the mountains, during the Bosnian war in the 1990s.

We also got to learn about, and experience, the Bura wind, which was interesting but I would be happy to not experience that again! We sat in the car with our tour guide for a few minutes when we got to the top of the mountain so he could talk and give us some information. There was a point where I was honestly scared that the wind was going to blow the car right off of the mountain. The car was shaking and moving the entire time we were sitting in it. Once we stepped outside, it was cold from the wind (it was January), but we took some pictures of the beautiful view and our tour guide made sure to get a short video of us struggling to stand upright in the wind. I wish I had looked into what the wind speed was that day. It would have been interesting to know.

So all in all we got a history lesson from the top, we got a beautiful view of the city of Mostar, and we got to experience the famous Bura wind - all in a quick visit to the top of the mountain. I'd definitely recommend taking a drive to the top. Just be mindful of the weather and wind conditions.

It's possible to walk to the top of the cross from the old bridge in Mostar. Simply look up directions on google maps. The first third of the walk is through the city, and is easy. The second third of the walk is along a highway that winds up the mountainside, and can be a little dangerous depending on how much traffic there is. It's possible, but this part was a bit hard, as there is no side of the road to step off to. The part after that is easy to walk up. Its easy to find, its a small paved road off to the left of the highway, and it goes up at a big pull out viewing area on the left. You can see the valley behind the mountain at this pull out. You can tell its the correct road because there will be carvings of crosses all along the way up to the big cross.
The big cross was awesome! Great view of Mostar. And not very many tourists up there. takes about 2 hrs each way.

First and foremost, we believe its important to have a car before you attempt to get up to Hum Mountain! The view from the top was really great and we were there during sunset which made the experience even more beautiful. The drive up, however, might be difficult as the tracks were two-way tracks which seemed to be wide enough for only one car. Good thing is there was no one there at the time when we were driving up and we had a good 20mins at the top of the mountain to ourselves!!! Also, I note that the road doesn not have a name but can be found in most GPSes and even google map.
Coordinates are: 43.330253, 17.807477
Definitely worth the trip up when you are in Mostar! Mostar is more than just the stari most:)

Yesterday we hiked up Hum mountain. We found a shortcut through a cemetery (Katolicko Groblje Soinovac). So it's best if you navigate with Google to the cemetery, then you enter it in the lower street and exit the cemetery through the upper entry. You will be on the bigger street now which the other people described before. And from there just follow the Google directions again. The shortcut will save you some time on the bigger street which is quite good because it's narrow and with a lot of cars.

First thing you see driving into Mostar is this cross on top of the mountain. A beautiful site. This shows the Christians are here. The mountain played an important role during the recent Balkans war.

Based on the other good tips from Tripadvisor and google maps, we walked to the mountain from the old town and it took about 1,5 hours one directiob. We left pretty early at 4.30 am and were back at the apartment at 8.30 am. We took photos, ate snacks at the top and visited a grocery store at our way back to home so in overall it took about 4 hours.

Like it is said in other reviews the walk goes next to a highway which is unpleasant if there is a lot of traffic. During our walk up around 5 am it was great since there were not a lot of cars on the road. Unlike at our way back down around 7 am when there were already annoying amount of cars on the road.

Besides the annoying factor of walking next to the highway the walk itself is easy. Recommend to people who want to move a bit during their holiday!

I did walk from the city and found it fairly easy, until you get to the switchbacks up the mountain. Once at the too the views are great, but it can be very windy.

You will need a car but once you are at the top of the mountain the views are worth the drive. You will see the big cross on the top and experience the peace and quiet of silence and the beautiful views of Mostar and the mountains.
