I visited Niš fortress (Tvrđava) several times to sit and relax under the trees on a bench, seesight or see a concert in one of the cafés. It is very nice place for all the occasions. The historical significance for Niš is big, but they don't treat it as they should. A lot of signs are destroyed and all of... More

One of the must see places in Nis, especially during summer. To have a walk or to dring a coffee at one of the many cafe's at the fortress is a recommendation. During summer season a lot of concerts are organized - Nishville Jazz Festival one of the best jazz festivals in region is held there

The fortress was freely accessible, so we checked it out when we were around. It was far from its former Ottoman glory. Graffiti on almost every inch of wall and garbage (empty bottles, candy wrappers etc.) everywhere did not really gave the impression it could've.

The fortress is essentially a large pleasant park with information about different aspects of the area such as powder houses, and the like.

We visited the Nis Fortress which is located across the Nisava River from the center of the city. The park inside the fortress is very nice. We took a walk down the alleys of the park and we came across some interesting historic monuments like the Bali-Bey Mosque, the Lapidarium and the Vidin Gate. In the fortress there is also... More

This 18th century Ottoman Fort is well-maintained and has been partially turned into greenspace as well as a venue for restaurants, bars, and concerts. On the walls are great views of Nis and the surrounding mountains. We took the little "train" ride around and it gave a nice overview that our 2 year old especially enjoyed. Afterwards we walked to... More

Just a couple of minutes' walk from the city centre, the fortress is an imposing structure. It is more like an open park inside, along with some stalls, shops and a nice open air theatre, but there are some historic buildings with signs (in English and Serbian) too, We enjoyed wandering around the fortress once it was a bit cooler,... Nis fortress is certainly the highlight of the city of Nis. It's a nice park with lots of archeological remains from the Roman period, so it is interesting and pleasent at the same time.

If you're expecting a detailed historical account of the fortress and Nis in general, you may be disappointed, but it's reasonably pretty with plenty of stalls inside.

Nice castle with a wonderful park behind it and its a free entrance. There are signs in Serbian and in English. You should check out the view from the tower. Do not forget to see the remains of the mosque in the park. There is a very nice exhibit in it.
