The best time to visit is second weekend of August when is jazz festival there! Fortress than has a different atmosphere and it is wonderful place to spent an evening there having good dinner or listening all kinds of jazz, funk and soul music in the open air...

The Turkish fortress turned into a beloved city park, well visited and used by the locals and visitors alike. The historic monuments - from Roman to contemporary - are well marked and explained in Serbian and English. Benches are numerous, cafés even more. Bustling with people in the time of jazz and movie festivals. It could do with better maintenance/cleaning... More

Interesting place, especially the mosque, but the overall image is that of a place forgotten by the authorities. It is sad to see monuments with high historical importance (the greatest Turkish fortress in Middle Eastern Europe) which are not properly maintained by the people in charge. For someone who is in Nis it deserve a visit.

The fortress is lovely. Granted, I only saw it during Nisville Jazz festival so I may have gotten a more lively impression than would be customary but this fortress reminded me of Kalemegdan in Belgrade, but then a bit smaller. I imagine that local families come here on weekends to relax and let their kids play. There were plenty of... More

Old fortress turned to park with restaurants and playground, souvenier shop etc. Historical parts are marked with tablos with brief description however are not preserved. Thus some areas are distroyed and covered with graffity, which is sad.

I found Nish to be a great relaxed town with a cafe culture. Loved the underground shopping area too.

Good ambient and quite decent food. The stuff was nice and the price of two meals with a drink was low..

I visited Niš fortress (Tvrđava) several times to sit and relax under the trees on a bench, seesight or see a concert in one of the cafés. It is very nice place for all the occasions. The historical significance for Niš is big, but they don't treat it as they should. A lot of signs are destroyed and all of... More

One of the must see places in Nis, especially during summer. To have a walk or to dring a coffee at one of the many cafe's at the fortress is a recommendation. During summer season a lot of concerts are organized - Nishville Jazz Festival one of the best jazz festivals in region is held there
