I thought this will be one of the best places to see in Nis, I was wrong tho. And the reason why is that people been ruining this nice place you can see graffiti all over the inside of the fortress and the city doesn’t seem to care much about the place either. Instead of making it a bit nicer, all you get is jazz museum (i dont understand its point in the fortress at all) and a cheap looking bar with loud playing amusement park type of music... oh, and one and only souvenir shop I’ve seen in Nis (I’m happy bout this tho). Why 2 stars? One star for nice looking fortress from outside and the other star for the souvenir shop.

I do not recommend visiting the city of Niš. It is not worth it. They go after foreigners (according to the license plate number of the car), IMMEDIATELY taking pictures of them from an unmarked car. They also sent us an unreasonable fine after about 1.5 years through the enforcement company Euro Parking Collection plc. And we are with the car only for approx. 2 min. they stopped on the side of the street so we wouldn't block traffic and pedestrians!!! According to them, a started car with a crew is parked - this is how they value tourists. NEVER EVER. Sick, cowardly, down-to-earth, ...

Built by the Turks who once ruled here, the Serbs have made this fort into a city park that celebrates their proud history, from Roman and Byzantine times to a former mosque and a random Jazz Musem in the old Turkish bath. Seemed a little dreary on a cold winter day, but it’s a must-see if you’re in Niš.

Niš Fortress (Serbian: Нишка тврђава / Niška tvrđava) is a fortress in the city of Niš, Serbia. It is a complex and important cultural and historical monument. It rises on the right bank of the Nišava River, overlooking the area inhabited for longer than two millennia. It was protected by law in May 1948 as it was declared a cultural site of great significance. The current condition of the fortress lists it as one of the best preserved fortifications of this kind in Serbia as well as on the Balkan Peninsula. The existing fortification is of Ottoman Turkish origin, dating from the first decades of the 18th century (1719–1723). It is well known as one of the most significant and best preserved monuments of this kind in the mid-Balkans. The Fortress was erected on the site of earlier fortifications – the ancient Roman, Byzantine, and later yet Medieval forts. During World War I it was occupied by Bulgarians who turned it into a prison where Serbian patriots were imprisoned.

Inside of the Fortress is excellent restaurant for everyone taste. Best time for visiting is spring and summer, since there are a lot of happenings inside Fortress. Film festival, Choir competition, Jazz festival Nisville and many others.

I’m a person that loves history, that being said I was very excited to see this fortress. They have information plaques so you can learn a little about the fortress. I didn’t give it 5 stars because they aren’t taking care of the place. There is graffiti everywhere and some of the structures aren’t being up-kept which is a shame.

It was a very hot day & our time was limited so we got in the little train that runs around the grounds, we had the entire vehicle to ourselves & the man was happy to set off with payment of 200 dinars for my sister & i. If we'd have had more time we'd have walked around & explored ourselves, but what we saw was very impressive.

You are surrounded by history. This is outstanding place for learning about the past and feeling centuries passing around you. 500 Years under Turks, elements left in language, food, architecture, customs etc...

Before them, Romans....

Nis as a center point for Romans, then fall in to Turkish hands. So much History. Must see in Nis. really must see. Next to a fortress is a main city market, also great to see, and feel atmosphere of local people from villages around Nis who are there to sell vegetables and fruits.

This fortress has so much to offer but unfortunately city doesn't have money to make it cleaner and to restore numerous places. It was much worse before, and i am happy to see it better, but still, i am looking g forward to see it much much better. This place has so much to offer. I believe that only small percentage is visible to us, and the rest will wait future, time with more money for culture. Till then, we can still enjoy every square foot in this place. Amazing.

As we were only in Nis for a short time we visited the fortress in the evening. The gates are lit up and it looks really nice.

It has a great atmosphere, the old Turkish baths have been turned into a restaurant, there are a few restaurants and bars that are really chilled out.

The park is lovely and it's great just to wander around.
