We arrived into the Port of Kotor on Thursday 15th August. We were immediately greeted by this friendly young guy named Bojan. He was promising a wonderful private tour of the local area (personal driver, free time to explore and air conditioning in the car) We felt quite targeted as young tourists just off a cruise ship, as when we asked for a few minutes to think about it, he tried to charm us by showing us panoramic pictures and informing us that the driver is not a creepy old man.
When we agreed to take the tour with Explore Montenegro, Bojan rang his driver Sergei and we were told that the car would arrive in less than 5 minutes. While we waited, Bojan made small talk, asking our ages and where we were came from. The car arrived quite promptly, however there was no communication between Bojan and the driver about the service that was to be provided. Initially this didn't seem strange as we assumed Sergei had given this tour many times.
Bojan also claimed the driver Sergei was funny and had very good English. He would also give us detailed commentary as we drove through and past the local tourist sites. Sergei spoke broken English and his only fact about Kotor and the surrounding area was that "this is fish farm". When we asked what was on Queen's Rock he simply replied "Church"
We were informed that payment would be taken at the end and that we would not have to pay the full amount unless we were completely satisfied. We assumed we would pay Bojan who would be waiting outside the ship when our tour finished but instead the driver dropped us by the old town and demanded that we pay up there and then. When we explained that we didn't have any cash on us and that we would pay Bojan before we got back on board the ship, as agreed, Sergei told us to get back into his car so that he could drive us to an ATM. We were not 100% satisfied with the tour so we decided to pay €30 each (instead of €40). Sergei counted the money and then called us back to his car where we had a lengthy and frustrating conversation with Bojan over the phone. Eventually we gave in and paid the remaining €20 out of our good grace. You cannot tell customers that you would prefer to not be paid at all rather than receive a bad TripAdvisor review and then demand they pay the full amount when the promised service is not provided..
There were also a number of times when the quality and safety of Sergei's driving came into question. He would often speed up and then slam on the brakes when a car in front wanted to make a turn. He also drove in the middle of the road (over the white line) and went quite fast around sharp corners/bends. He answered his phone while driving through the centre of Kotor. The worst part was that while driving in busy traffic, he leaned across towards the glove compartment and grabbed a piece of paper and a pen, then turned around and asked us to sign our names.. why this couldn't have waited until the end of the trip or when the car was stopped in a safe space bewilders me! He then spent the next few minutes trying to read our names on the piece of paper that lay on the passenger seat rather than concentrating on the road on front of him..
I would strongly advise anyone who visits Kotor or any of its surrounding towns to avoid Explore Montenegro Travel Agency... Even though the other tour providers might be more expensive they will surely be better quality!!
