The Golden Rose Synagogue that once stood here was constructed in the late 1500s, and was one of the most spectacular landmarks of the city. It would have been one of the oldest synagogues within the current borders of Ukraine, but was tragically destroyed by the Nazis using explosives.
The ruins remain today along with a memorial that is a symbol of the tragedy of the Lviv Jews. The space feels like an "open wound" attesting to the disappearance of a community that once played a major role here. The memorial makes a powerful statement of man's cruelty.

In what once was the heart of the Jewish Quarter of Lemberg (Lviv) are now only few remnants as the Jewish members of the community with very few exceptions were exterminated during World War II and the quarter was destroyed. In remembrance of the Golden Rose Synagogue there is a new memorial monument with stones and a remembrance plate. During my visit, three young, local men on the site exhibited inappropriate behaviour as they were playing loud music, drinking and throwing a can onto the site. Although I do not understand Ukrainian or Russian, it was my clear impression that they were laughing at me as I was quietly visiting the site. This experience prooved more than anything that a memorial site like this is most needed to keep the memory alive - some of us really care!!!

Staroyevryeiskaya Street, or Old Jewish Street, was once the heart of the large Jewish community in L'viv. Wiped out nearly completely during the horrors of the Nazi occupation, the Jewish community more or less disappeared from its former home. A moving monument, built fairly recently, provides focus and a place of reflection for remembering a very terrible past.

This street now looks much better than 10 years ago with all that new restaurants, renewed buildings and restored Synagogue place! It's so great to have this sacred place renewed with all that old photos, little stories and words of the people who used to live in Lviv and serviced the Holokost. Love to walk down the street with my little kid.

Some interesting bars & restaurants on this street such as Dim Legend.
The name means 'Old Jewish street' in Ukrainian and this street was the heart of one of two Jewish districts in the city, this one being a relatively affluent one.
The Golden Rose Synagogue was once at the end of the street but was sadly blown up by the Nazis in 1941. There are currently plans to build a park / Jewish memorial at the site

Staroyevryeiskaya Street is a long street to the east of Market Square and if you have grown tired of the main heart of Lviv take a stroll down here. There aren't any museums or architectural gems, but plenty of places to srop for a drink or a bite to eat.

This is a street full of hidden gems to see and to visit in the old city. One of my favourites is Dim Legend (The House of Legends) restaurant with its rooftop terrace.

Just one of the oldest streets of the town which is worth seeing for what would feel the spirit of Europe and Jewish culture in these streets

Well kept and poignant space beside the last wall of the Golden Rose synagogue which stood here before the Nazis blew it up.
