About
St Nicholas’ Fortress at the entrance of St Anthony’s Channel in Sibenik is a unique monument of Renaissance maritime fortification architecture and a superb example of our architectural heritage. In 2017 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the nomination ''The Defence System of the Republic of Venice between the 16th and 17th Centuries''. St Nicholas' Fortress can be visited only by boat organized by the Public Institution Nature of the Sibenik-Knin County. The boat departs from the port of Sibenik. A visit to the fortress lasts 2 hours and includes a boat trip from the port of Sibenik to the fortress with the assistance of tour escorts and with multimedia guides. Experience a unique panoramic view of the city of Sibenik from the sea, a boat trip through the buffer zone of St Nicholas' Fortress as part of the significant landscape ''Channel-Port" of Sibenik. At the end of the trip through the channel, discover magnificent St Nicholas' Fortress.

We booked the last boat tour offered (5:30 p.m.) of the day. It was a wonderful, relaxed 30-minute boat ride to the fortress. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We were given tablets with headphones that we could use to visit the fortress (in the language of our choice). The journey was truly breathtaking and the fortress was very interesting and beautiful. We were able to move around the grounds freely for an hour with the tablets and look around at our leisure. A member of staff was always within reach if we had any questions. The cost of the tour was also OK! We would definitely do it again! (Please note that you can only visit the interior of the fortress with a guide. The entrance can only be reached by boat!)

We don't usually do tours, but taking a tour was the only way to see this. Onboard they give you a tablet that provides information along the way. The scenery was beautiful! Once at the fortress, the tour guide gives basic information and then you can take the whole tour with her or you can use the tablet and tour on your own. what a great way to do it! They have started to develop some artificial reality to bring the story alive. It was an enjoyable morning!

A very simple but nice excursion from Sibenik. The boat (we took the 10:00 AM one) allows you to explore the channel between the Sibenik bay and the fort. The fort itself is OK but mostly an empty shell. The very good audioguide makes up for everything.

There's a really good offer to visit the fortress by boat which gives you a chance to explore the fortress using digital technology and specially designed apps. Views are amazing and the stories you hear or read as well. Take your time to stroll around it.

You need to book at the port of Sibenik the combi ticket to the fortress. Seems a trap but is NOT.
The tour on the boat through the channel is a beauty and fun
The fortress is really interesting and via a multi media tool made vivid and cool.
Beautiful views over the sea of course from the deck of the fortress.
As a desert the return boat tour isn’t boring at all. You see Sibenik from sea and enjoy.
Would book it straight again 😉

It was free for visitors up until this year, but now, after some very minor restoration work, the local government charges a heavy entry fee and you can only visit the fort by a boat from Šibenik. This shortsightedness is very unfortunate as the fort and its surroundings make for a spectacular view, but it is outrageous to charge visitors a premium when there is no content or facilities in the fort at all.

Support sustainable and fair tourism and avoid paying for this place until something changes.

I came here with my five friends, all of us hoping to go inside the fortress from walking from St. Nicholas' Beach. There is a boardwalk leading from the beach to an island and then a causeway from the island to the fortress, but the causeway is very rocky so bring suitable beach / water shoes! Once we crossed the causeway, it became apparent that the fortress was not accessible by land. We swam round the other side of the fortress to the boat entrance, but this was manned by a security guard who would not let us enter. It was still fun to hang out around the fortress, but don't expect to go inside unless you've booked a boat tour.

My wife and I visited the Fortress. We drove. Far to far to walk from Sibenik.

Picturesque area, walked across the rocks to the fort and yes that is as far as it goes.

There are two planks precariously set up to climb up into a window type opening.

If you are young, no issues, but when u are a little more mature no way.

The only entrance is from the sea by boat.

Part of the series " The game of thrones was filmed in this fort.
Take pics from the mainland in front of the entry door.

Could be a very impressive tourist attatraction

We just went yesterday. It's not strictly forbidden - the sign clearly says 'enter at your own risk' and there are no barriers to entry. Inside the fort there are sharp edges, crumbling rock and a climb up a 10 inch wide very solid plank to a window about 4-5 meters high.

Use Google maps to find the closest road. It's a boating club. Park your car and walk the easy path to the fort. There is a playground there. It's probably easier at low tide. There is a section you have to cross where you have to step on stones across some running water.

The window is easily accessible and the planks are solid but narrow - 10 inches or so. You will have to hoist yourself up the last bit so it requires some strength. Having a strong person go first to assist others is useful.

The fort is great. Views are spectacular. The main floor is spooky. There are stalactites and stalagmites forming. Bring a flashlight.

This fortress looks very good inside and from outside. I think it is unique in the world that it is actually the only approach to it from the sea. It keeps the entrance to the channel that every ship that wants to reach Sibenik has to pass, so there is something to see. Sadly, it's not officially open for sightseeing. Some arrangements have been made but not ending and are now dangerous to walk around. In some more developed country, this fortress could be the first sightseeing in town. Thus, it only shows how local policy can destroy one of the most beautiful fortresses on the sea.
