About
St. Michael’s Fortress is the oldest one in Šibenik. It was first mentioned in 1066 and it is the place where the city was born. Fortress was built to control and defend the Šibenik lagoon and the mouth of the river Krka. The strength of the ramparts made the fortress the dominant protector of the area. Today St. Michael’s Fortress is important cultural and historical monument. You can tour the fortress with an audio guide and view 3D mapping projections in its interior. The fortress is mostly recognizable by its outdoor stage which became one of the most prestigious regional stages in a short period of time.

It was not possible to pay by card at the entrance during our visit and the cashier was quite confused. I definitely recommend buying straight entry to the other two fortresses as well. The fort itself is nicely restored and accessible. Inside there is a souvenir shop, social facilities and refreshments with seating under the built-in auditorium. The interactive tours with video mapping were not working during our visit.

From the top, you will get superb views over the old town of Sibenik. Worth doing at sunset. A bit to climb but was worth it.

A bit of a climb, but worthwhile. Mostly for the views though, not really that much of interest left inside. There is a fairly good and extensive audioguide. A good idea to take the combined ticket for the three forts.

Thanks for the review! We are happy to hear you've enjoyed your time at the fortress and visited Barone & St. John's fortresses also. Just wanted to give few tips for next visit. Besides audio guide, at St. Michael's Fortress underground water tanks there is 3D mapping exhibition (also included in daily ticket price) were the story of city and fortress origins comes to life using the same technology. There is also a VR point with historic games in which can enjoy both kids and adults. Just few steps ahead is exhibition that explains the origin of the idea for open air stage that is currently at the fortress. Hope this is helpful for future visits!

St Michael's Fortress is the oldest and most famous fortress in Sibenik built in the 13th c. The fortress walls soon became the city walls which surrounded and protected Sibenik for centuries. The fortress features architectural elements of various artistic style since it was reconstructed and upgraded a few times during history.

It was built on a high steep rock and dominated the city centre, offering a great view of St. Anthony’s channel, the bay and the mouth of the Krka River. It can be seen from pretty much anywhere in town. It was opened for visitors in 2014 following an extensive makeover after being neglected for years. That is when the stage and stands with 1077 seats were built.

The uphill climb took some effort, but the view made it worthwhile. We had purchased the combo tickets which allows one to visit the three forts within a seven day period.

We spent about an hour here – make sure that you ask for the multimedia guide that complements the information boards and historical contents of the fortress. In this way, you can explore the fortress with a tablet in your hand and headphones in your ears, and the content will be activated independently at the moment of passing by the point where the transmitter is placed. By following the numbers on the media guide, we learned about the structure and history of the fort.

In the fortress' water tanks there is 3D mapping exhibition were the story of city and fortress origins comes to life using the same technology.

Here you will also find the restrooms as well as a small café, all on the main floor. As we were visiting just when the fort opened, we had the entire site to ourselves but as we were leaving, several school buses pulled up.

Be advised that there is more climbing involved inside. Clamber up to the battlements of this large medieval fort for magnificent views over Šibenik, the Krk River and the Adriatic islands.

A pair of defensive walls connect the fortress with the seafront below. The passage that ran between them was intended to help defenders retreat to their boats in the event of a siege.

This fort has been under UNESCO protection since 2017. I would have loved seeing a concert here, perhaps next time we visit.

Beatiful views from the oldest fort. A lot of interactive and explanatory material.
When you see the amount of work put into the fortress you understand the price.

Well laid out with plenty of information (be sure to get the tablet from the information booth in the main indoor section, included with the entry ticket), spectacular views, two great immersive tunnels showing Croatian history in a graphic way. Just wish we could have coincided with a concert here! Allow a couple of hours to do it justice.

If you are going for the view, do not. Save yourself the money and go to the cemetery right below for free. Bonus, you get to see some beautiful gravestones and 'mausoleums'.

Thanks for the review, but we must disagree. The fortress offers more than that. At the info desk visitors can take free multimedia guide that complements the information boards and historical contents of the fortress. In this way, you can explore the fortress with a tablet in your hand and headphones on your ears, and the content will be activated independently at the moment of passing by the point where the transmitter is placed. In the fortress' water tanks there is 3D mapping exhibition were the story of city and fortress origins comes to life using the same technology. The both features are included in ticket price. If you get tired of the tour there is a bar underneath the auditorium, and if you want to take a lasting memory of the visit there is souvenir shop. Hopefully our comment will be useful for your next visit.
