To get here from port we planned to get a taxi and back, what a bad idea.
Tourist authority at port displayed taxi rates. To city centre: 6 euro.

As experienced travellers we know that most of times taxis waiting outside harbours do not offer standard rides but city tours or overpriced transfers. Then we didn't complain to pay 20 euros.

On our way back we simply went to a taxi parking and asked for the price but we've been told that it was by taximeter. Ok...to make the story short - we've been asked 70 euro. Never happened before such a ridicoulous request. To break off this highly unpleasant situation, before walking away without useless complaints - we paid more money than our previous ride but not as much as asked.
Unfortunately this is another mishap that frequently happens everywhere.

Primarily because it used to be the main entrance into the city and is located by the Fosa Harbour with views of the water and is today the best preserved of the city wall gates.
It was originally built by the Venetian architect Michele Sanmicheli in 1543 and features a huge triumphal arch and two side arches, all decorated with images of Zadar’s patron saint, Chrysogonus. This explains why there is also a large winged lion of St. Mark hovering over the central arch as a reminder of Venice’s long reign over Zadar.
As others have mentioned the best view of the gate can be had from the elevated botanical garden to the right of the gate as you come from the harbour.
During our explorations of Zadar I think we also found the Sea Gate, the New Gate, and St. Rocco’s Gate but none were a touch on

The Land Gate is a fine piece of photogenic Venetian architecture. There is a good view of the gate from the adjacent park.

Behind the gate there are interesting parallel sections of walls from (restored) Roman, Late Antiquity, Medieval (including the Captain's Tower), and Renaissance eras.

We walked through Roman ruins to see and hear the Sea Organ and the sun dial. Also climbed up the bell tower at EUR3 to see a panaromic view of Zadar. Recommend going up there for postcard picture perfect photographs. It gets windy up there so bring a jacket. There are quite a few steps up, so you need to be physically prepared please. There are many souvenir stalls and interesting restaurants at Zangy Zadar. Enjoyed this beautiful city on the Delightful Dalmatian coast of charming Croatia.

Really beautiful atmosphere in Zadar, will come back again, for sure. The old town is nice with small streets packed with tourists, nice terraces and amazing artizanal shops! The church wasn't open to visit.

Do not plan to walk into town from the new pier. There are parts of the route that do not even have sidewalks. Take the shuttle from the cruise ship. There were not any taxis at the pier when we arrived. When the shuttle drops you off, everything in the old city is easily walkable. We we met at the pier by dancers in native costumes performing native dances as we docked.

Zadar is a beautiful city. Its old town is a nice stroll. The old gate was build in the 1500s by the Venetians when they controlled Zadar and Croatia. Much of the detail work still remands.
There is a car park just to the right of the gate. There is free parking about half a mile away from the old town/gate off of Marka Marulića.

Zadar has much to offer. Coming into the town is nothing inspiring, but as you turn onto the North side of the harbour, the old wall appears. Park by the wall if you can(by a modern walkbridge where the tourist train stops) and go through the gate, one of several, into the old town itself.Wander through the streets, squares and it will strike you how nice, clean and unobtrusive everywhere is. Go to the old churches, and to the Roman gate by the Roman park. Each site, each monument you see is striking enough to keep any historian, let alone holiday-maker happy! Then a walk along the southern harbourside to the sea organ and its strange moanings! All the better as darkness comes with its illuminated area.
Plenty of shops, souvinir and other, and some good restaurants in the squares and sise streets.
We were staying on Pag and came to Zadar twice, enjoying both times.
