I came here whilst I was on a holiday this September. It seems it was only me that wanted to go inside. Very cheap entry and worth a visit. It seems this was built with lots of old Roman ruins and you can see this evident inside as they made use of the materials they had, as shown in some of my photos. Really cool round building and you can go upstairs, but it seems there is no viewing point. Really interesting history and worth a visit.

A 9 th century church build in a circle with a high dome.
It was built close to the Roman forum where remnants are still seen. Some remnants were used to build the church and can be seen near the base of the walls
On the evening we visited there was a light and music show which highlighted the beautiful acoustics of the church

Church of St. Donatus sits right beside the Roman Forum. Entry is 15 Kuna each and it is a photographer's delight.

Built in the 9th century using some materials form the forum next door, it is the most important preserved structure of its period in Dalmatia. The use of the church has varied - warehouse, archaeological museum. Today, the inside of the church is completely empty except for the columns and now, due to its acoustics, it is currently used as the concert venue for the annual International Festival of Medieval Renaissance Music.

It is very much worth your time to walk the inside perimeter of the base of the building and to go upstairs and do the same thing.

Seems reasonably well intact, but not very spectacular. With 5 storeys high, the angel on top overlooks the old town square.

Construction began in the 9th century by Donatus of Zadar.
In the 15th century it had a name change from the church of the holy trinity to its recent name.

A museum nowadays, this was previously a pre-Romanesque church.

The building is impressive in itself, but the surroundings are gorgeous too - Bell Tower, Roman Forum, St Mary's Church, etc.

That something that old can both be so irregular (e.g. built on random Roman finds, not quite circular) and so majestic is quite impressive.

Really lovely church close to the sea. Easy to find on the market square. Lots of lovely things to see inside - don't be fooled by the exterior! Worth the entrance fee.

In tow with Ivana, a great guide, who helps paint the historic picture of Zadar & this Church of St. Donatus.
It seems even bigger when inside. Just climb the stairs to the gallery for a spectacular appreciation of the architecture. Truly a "wow" type of effect.

Climing the steps to the top, priceless! So much history in one place. The shops around the church is worth while to visit.
