- Massimiliano PNovara, Italy46,049 contributionsTriumphal archThe Arch of the Sergii is a Roman triumphal arch dating back to the 1st century BC. originally leaning against the defensive system of the walls and which today practically marks the entrance to the main street of the historic center of Pula, on the opposite side to the Forum square. It is an arch of rather small dimensions but has interesting ornamental motifs on the internal side. Also known as Porta Aurea, it is in a very good state of conservation, as well as being one of the most important testimonies of the Roman era in the city, and undoubtedly deserves to be seen.Visited April 2024Traveled soloWritten June 8, 2024
- Henk ROosterhout, The Netherlands250 contributionsNice photo opportunityNice entrance to the old town. It's a little arc de triomph. Nice for a photo opportunity. There are also some small foundations ahead. Very old, of course. A few restaurants around it for a nice lookout.Visited August 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 3, 2024

I always fascinated by the way that this arch is been preserved is been there since 27BC.
The building is impressive and colossal....I feel sad for some people that does not appreciate the magnificent of the building.
Is free to see it, my advice take time to appreciate the architecture around the arch there are some nice cafes to seat ans enjoy the scenery

On our family stroll around Pula on afternoon recently we came across this impressive Roman Triumphal arch purely by accident. Once again we were thrilled to see that such architectural masterpieces have survived the rigours of time. This one, apparently erected a couple of decades before Christ, celebrates some of the Sergii family, notably Lucius Sergius Lepidus. He fought against Mark Anthony and Cleopatra of Egypt in the sea Battle of Actium in the Ionian Sea, north west of Greece (near Preveza today).
Monumental sea battles in the Ionian Sea a few millennia ago seem a far cry from the gentle entrance to the quaint, old town on Pula in the 21st century. Amazing really.

On our first visit to Pula 4 years ago we took a selfie in front of the arc, so this year we went to Pula again and stopped here to take another selfie and walk around the city.
The arc is really stunning, to me it seems a bit out of place, since most of the city is run down and not particularly well-preserved, but the arc is definitely staggering and leads you to a pleasant walking-street, where most of the city's bustle happens.
If you visit Pula this arc is definitely worth taking a look at!

Actually it is pretty nice. When you go through the gate, you enter Pula's main touristic street where you will find all stores. Usually near the gate there is also some street performer. Possibility of taking great pictures.

This is a beautiful Roman triumphal arch right at the start of the old town walking street in Pula. Take a photo or two then meander on down the street for a nice afternoon. Don't forget to visit the Venetian fort at the top of the hill for some nice views.

The "Arco dei Sergi" stands at the beginning or end of the pedestrian zone and is a beautiful monument to old times. Certainly not as big and pompous as the buildings in Rome, but it offers a great flair if you walk through the Arco into the idyllic pedestrian zone with all the old buildings, cafes, shops and restaurants.
If you are in Rovinj or nearby and are interested in architecture and history, you should spend a day there. Worth it. The city center is beautiful and has a lot to offer

At first glance, its just an arch, similar to what you can see in other European cities (like the Arc De Triomphe in Paris). But in reality, this is a really, really old arch, built between 29 -27 BC. It stands at one of the entrances to the historic old town area of Pula. I was fascinated by all of the Roman history in Pula, and the Arco dei Sergi didn't disappoint. I am a lover of history, yet I still find it hard to wrap my head around the age of these types of Roman ruins. This is a structure that is over 2000 years old, and it's still standing. I don't know if I would go to Pula JUST to see this site. But if you're in the city, then it's an absolute must see. Make sure to take the time to really look at it too. The amount of detail in the carvings that cover it is impressive.

You can go through this arch and start your shopping in Pula. We were there during the special sales :)
be aware though that they can try to cheat you at ShoesBox!
Enjoy the restaurant along the street and at the square of the temple of Augustus. Not at Nonno, though, where the food is not so good and e prices somewhat high.
