Ok, let's start with the fact there a very few sandy beaches around Croatia. this beach is pebbly but once you get over that relax and enjoy this beach. it is the best of the 3 around Srebreno and Mlini. the sea is quite shallow for some distance and crystal clear and warm. we opted to hire Sunloungers with a Parasol at 110 Kuna a day. roughly £12? well worth it we thought. There is a Bar/cafe close by for drinks and fast food. The history of the Balkan war is close by with the 3 destroyed hotels which have now been bought by a Singapore PE group with a start date of 2025/6 to renovate. Enjoy the peace before the area turns into one huge building site

Great for urban exploration but I wasn't bothered about the beach. I visited in mid-October (midweek) and the resort was virtually deserted. The beach bar was closed and so were the restrooms. It was so creepy that I decided not to swim or sunbathe. I visited the hotel ruins out of curiosity. They are all accessible for exploration and photos, but you must be cautious and watch your step. Take a torch if you are specifically intent on visiting the many pitch black interiors of the hotels. Most of the ruins can be viewed without torches though. Some of the darkened rooms and doorways were very foreboding, so I took a quick peep then backed away quickly. There are crumbling stairwells, flaking and degraded ceilings, scarily darkened lift shafts, abandoned pools and rooms, derelict restrooms, creative graffiti and signs of people who may have partied or slept there at some point. There are some large and small crevices and holes in the floors, so be very careful. I would not recommend venturing in here alone. If you twist your ankle or injure yourself in some other way, you may not find it easy to summon help. Go there in groups or at least in pairs. You can spend literally a whole day there exploring and there are some fabulous photo opportunities. A creepy experience. Go before they obliterate this historical site. I imagine that it may not be there for too much longer. If you want to stay nearby, I recommend the Sheraton or One Suite Hotel. They are literally a 5-10 min walk around the bay. You can also get to the beach by water taxi from Dubrovnik or Cavtat. Get off at Srebreno bay where the Sheraton and One Suite are and follow the signs for Kupari. It will say 400 meters to Kupari.

The beach was overcrowded and not very clean. I have been to a number beaches near Dubrovnik, and even if they are as crowded, I would choose any of them over this one.
There are hotels in ruins there which are fascinating to see and might be a good reason for going there. But not the beach.

We stopped here on our trip from Dubrovnik to Cavtat with easy access off the main road. Surprisingly there were several cars parked near the beachfront, all accompanying fishermen to their hobby. We walked around the complex to see the abandoned bullet ridden military resort buildings ruined by the same army during the 1991 war years.
Sitting proudly alone on the elevated front is the Czech built Grand Hotel which will survive as a historical monument as all the other structures will eventually be razed for a new resort on this once prime beach.

We were intrigued to find out about this once thriving resort and its history in the Croatian war of independence. You are able to freely wander around the old buildings and it's a great place for anybody into urban exploration. I would advise anybody visiting to wear close shoes as there is a lot of glass around. We arrived there by bus and got off at the Konzum supermarket and then walked around the headland from Srebreno. The beach is great and safe. Ensure you take cash as the beach bar doesn't take cards.

As your looking back at the hotels from the beach. Explored the hotel to the right. First thing to note is this is not kid friendly. No child should be allowed in at all. There are open lift shafts flooded at the bottom along with the lifts. Drain covers missing some with 10 foot drops. Pitch black areas with pipes sticking out everywhere. On all floors there are the remains of wooden doors which are wrotten laid on the floor covering more drainage wholes. Don't get me wrong for an adult with a modicum of common sense a flash light. And a person outside that's knows your in there. It's a great place to explore

We stayed just along from Kupari and walked in to explore.
The beach is fine. Not much shade, gets very busy but the water is clean and cool !
That’s not the reason to go there though.
The ghost hotels ! They are amazing and eerie.
There are three huge hotels that have been left after the civil war They are empty’s bar the graffiti and memories.
A fascinating place to explore although be careful as they are derelict and can be dangerous.
If you can pay a visit and see for yourself. They can’t stay like that for much longer as Croatia is fast becoming a top destination so prime locations like Kupari will probably be developed.

I was quite disappointed that such a gorgeous country has such hostile locals towards tourists. Locals really dislike tourists and are trying to limit tourist industry to a certain number of people that can visit.
Local businesses artificially raise the prices on everything. Attitude toward tourists in a country where tourism dominates the Croatian service sector and accounts for up to 20% of Croatian GDP should not be so hostile.
In hotels the staff is friendly but even in stores and restaurants you can feel their disdain.
The cost for a simple 3/4 star hotel is more expensive than such cities that NY and Paris. I paid $400 per night for a “4” star hotel which was not a 4 star hotel by other measures. It had no facilities at all, no restaurant, not even a coffeemaker or water in the room. I was told to drink tab water. My room was never made up and there was no elevator in the hôtel. Only stairs.
Would not come back here, not a good value for the money. For $400 per night I can get a much better stay in other countries

We stopped off here on our way from the airport to our hotel; it is on the main D8 coast road between the airport and Dubrovnik. It's only a couple of minutes drive from the main road and does have a sandy & pebbly beach that is popular with locals and is also not known by many tourists.
Kupari was built by Tito and was a holiday resort for the party elite in the days of the former Yugoslavia. At the start of the Homeland War in 1991, it was attacked by the JNA and largely destroyed. The buildings still bear the very visible signs of the sustained bombardment and the juxtaposition between today's sunbathers & swimmers and the empty shells of the buildings is very poignant.
If you have time and your taxi driver is in his mid-40s or older (and so likely to have fought in the Homeland War), ask him to stop off here and show you around. It is a very stark reminder of what the population endured on their way to independence.

One wonders if one should share this. But it is a monument to the civil war that was only 17 years ago. The central building we were told had been a palace for Austro/Hungarian nobility, later a hotel then the 3 huge hotels were built around it in the 60's When Yougoslavia existed and was under the heavy hand of Russia. The appaling damage from sniper, rocket and mortar fire brings home to folk like us who have never experienced warfare mans inhumanity to man.
A very sobering experience. All this was built on what would have been one of the main beaches near Dubrovnik (only 8 miles north) There is talk of rebuilding

On boat and ask to be dropped at Srebeno or Mlini . Mlini is furthest but only 10-15 minutes walk along sea by path or get bus to Srebeno and fork right at beach and it's a five minute walk.

If you go to Cavtat (from Dubrovnik), around the main bay is a hoist for disabled people to get into the water. Absolutely gorgeous. If you can stand, wear swimming shoes. There are some black urchins on the rocks.

Ciao, sarò di passaggio in zona la prossima estate, dopo la delusione di avere saputo che all'isola dei conigli non si può andare con il cane, qui a Kupari si può? È di piccola taglia e se ne guarda bene dal mettere le zampe in acqua!

Ho visto molti cani in spiaggia......forse

Hi, we are visiting mlini 2017, does anyone know or have any clues if kupari resort will still be there? I've read about the area being developed but I'm hoping that we will still be able to see the abandoned hotels. Sad, awful reminders of the war I know but also interesting and a reminder what this beautiful country went through - I have been holidaying in Croatia since 1984.
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I wish i could help with the adress, but i can't. I do not have an adress, but I find out that if you type Kupari, Croatia in garmin it find it.
But no worries, if you do not have garmin. The thing is you just leave Dubrovnik to the main road called Jadranska cesta (D8) and you just need to continue with driving for about 10 km. No more. By the road you will see a road sign for Kupari. You will see when you will be in Kupari town, so you just look for a sign beach or military resosrt when in Kupari. It's not hard to find....
I hope you will find.
