Going from the Stradun towards the cathedral, near the Rector's Palace, you come across a bronze statue. This is Marin Drzic, the "Shakespeare of Ragusa" (who however signed himself Marino Darsa, wrote in various languages and had an eventful life, living in a thousand places and dying in Venice). As already highlighted, the statue has a shiny nose due to a legend about the luck that rubbing it would bring.

We visited the Old Town of Dubrovnik for a walk. It is a bronze statue of Marin Družić, a 19th-century playwright called Shakespeare of Dubrovnik, and sits in front of the Old Governor's House. There is a legend that people will be lucky, and many tourists touch them, so their noses and knees glow, but this legend has no basis whatsoever. Incidentally, the hole in the statue's neck is said to be a bullet hole.

Tuseday 7th June and we paid the first visit of our holiday to the amazing Old Town of Dubrovnik.

It was here that we saw this bronze statue, in Luža Square, between the Rectors Palace and the Drzic Theatre.

The statue pays hommage to Marin Držić a Croatian writer and playwright.

He was born in the Republic of Ragusa, now Croatia in 1508 and died on 2nd May 1567 in the Republic of Venice aged 59.

The statue depicts the writer sitting with a piece of paper, in one hand and resting on his lap. In the other hand he is holding a pen as if he is writing something.

He is deemed to be one of the finest Renaissance playwrights and writers of Croatian literature.

Such is the regard and esteem for him, in 2008 the Croatian Parliament declared it to be the Year of Marin Držić, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of his birth.

The nose of the statue has been rubbed shiny by visitors who pose for photos while rubbing the nose, possibly for luck, who knows.

The statue of Marin Držić stands in front of the Rector's Palace in the heart of Dubrovnik's Old Town. He was a famous writer and lived in the 16th century. The nose of the statue is very shiny because, according to legend, rubbing it brings good luck.

Located between the Rectors Palace and Dubrovnik's "Marin Drzic" Theater in Luža Square.
Marin Drzic was born in Dubrovnik in 1508 and was a 16th Century renaissance playwright and prose writer. His statue is was made by the famous Croatian sculpture Ivan Mestrovic, whose signature is on the side of the statue, and is located between the Rectors Palace and Dubrovnik's "Marin Drzic" Theater in Luža Square.
Might be hard to see if the cruise ships are in, as herds of tourists will be clamoring to sit on the statue’s lap and rub his nose for good luck. Best time to take a photo is before 8:00am and after 5:00pm

TIP if you look closely you will see a hole in the right side of his neck caused by a bullet from the “recent war”

I had no idea who Marin Drzic was but apparently he was a writer who has been called Dubrovniks Shakespeare. Not sure how correct this is.
The statue also has a shiny nose which everyone rubs as apparently it is good luck and supposedly brings the toucher of the nose back to Dubrovnik in the future. In no literature could I find the actual basis of this so I suppose its like Dubrovnik's version of the Trevi Fountain throwing a coin into it over your left shoulder which brings you back.
A lot of people also get a photo on his lap but this is frowned upon and a local told me not to do it. I did it anyway as there were other people doing it and this local didn't ask them not to. Need to be consistent there.
Still, as statues go, it wasn't a bad one and worth a photo.

I’m not sure who this dude is but I got my picture taken with him and I touched his nose because everyone else was doing it. Probably not a wise thing to do but I like to live life on the edge. Was he in Game of Thrones?

Apparently it is for good luck. Why touching the nose of a famous Croatian playwright’s nose is lucky I don’t know, but can you resist or risk not doing what all the other tourists are doing?!
