Must-do in Dubrovnik. Amyisraelchai. This means that the synagogue is your home away from home. Blessed are you who enter here and blessed are you on your way. This is a primary street right off the strada and it is the same street that Jews found refuge when they first established a communion Dubrovnik over 200 years ago.

There is another TripAdvisor review venue that identifies this simply as “Synagogue” and has far more traveler ratings. The Jewish ghetto was established in October 1546 and the synagogue shortly after, in a 13th century Gothic home. It has served congregations since. This is the oldest Sephardic synagogue in Dubrovnik and the second oldest in Europe. Whenever I travel, I try to visit synagogues and Holocaust memorials, to honor those who have been tormented by various “civilizations” for thousands of years. Recall the Exodus of enslaved Jews from Egypt? The complex contains a museum and bookstore, from which I purchased a copy of “Jews of Dubrovnik” for the physician who virtually saved my life in 2003.

This is an exquisite Synagogue maintained lovingly by the small congregation that remains in Dubrovnik.. The history of the Jewish people in Croatia in the 20th century was not great and with anti-semitism rearing its head again throughout Europe in this century, this is an important reminder of the early Jewish settlement when Jews were accepted.

One of the most interesting and moving parts of our visit to Dubrovnik. The small museum reflects the almost universal experience of Jewish people around the world. A glass pointer from Venice, tapestries and metal Torah adornments were so familiar and yet so unique.

This synagogue is, I believe, the second oldest in the Balkans. Dubrovnik apparently welcomed many of the Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in 1492. The interior is quite atmospheric, with its heavy brass lamps and blue ceiling dotted with stars. The synagogue itself is on the second floor, with a small museum on the first floor, and a shop selling Judaica on the ground floor. The museum contains many Jewish sacred things, including large Torah scrolls and various fabrics. Admission is 50 kn, app, 6 GBP.

With all respect to religious beliefs, it's not suitable to general public.
We paid 50 kunas each to see 2 small rooms and one tiny synagogue. It's not worth the time.

Remarkable to see such a well maintained old synagogue in the heart of the walled city
While it doesn’t have the same impact as the grand shul of Budapest it’s easily as majestic as those in Venice

Not being Jewish and only being in one synagogue in the US it was interesting to see this old synagogue. This is from Wikipedia " The Old Synagogue in Dubrovnik, Croatia is the oldest Sefardic synagogue still in use today in the world and the second oldest synagogue in Europe. It is said to have been established in 1352, but gained legal status in the city in 1408." The lighting, the seating the religious items and the small balcony as well as the museum rooms gave a lot of light on the Jewish religion. There is a small fee to get in but I think it is worth it especially when you convert Kuna to Dollars.

In the center of the town down a narrow alley but easy to find. It is in excellent condition but check to see when it is open to the public.

Dubrovnik official recognized the first Jewish settlement in its territory in 1546. In 1562, a local baroque style palace was adapted into a synagogue. The building is still in use for religious worship and as a museum as it is the second oldest Sephardic synagogue in Europe. The museum's collection holds a number of artifacts and Torah from as early as the 13th century. Dubrovnik had a Jewish community of over 2000 prior to WWII. Now there are only 45 Jews in the whole of Dubrovnik. We had the unique opportunity of being present on a Saturday when the first Bar Mitzvah in 7-8 years was celebrated in this synagogue.

Are there Shabbat services at the old Dubrovnik Synagogue or elsewhere in the city?
