Walked into this museum to get out of the rain, and what an interesting museum it was. Lots of English notices explaining the history of the city, and of the ancient roman ruins. Museum itself is situated in an historical palazzo, which is fascinating in itself. As you head up the stairs, each level covers a more recent historical period up until roughly the beginning of the 20th century.

Positive: find out more about the history of this fascinating city, great maps and artifacts.

Negatives: some items' explanatory notes were not translated into English, nor did the museum cover any recent history (WW2, Tito's rule, breakup of Yugoslavia etc) which would have made for a fascinating addition.

I really enjoyed this museum. Yes it is easier to follow if you are a Croatian speaker but there are a number of items with multi language explanations. Incredible old artifacts from the Roman era into the medical times.

Included on the Split card if you stay 5 days or more, entry was free (pay with no card).
Three floors of an old Split family home, filled with English translations of local information about the evolution of the city.
Not exciting, but informative.

The Muzej Grada Splita (Split City Museum) is a well thought out museum full of interesting exhibits that encompass items from the Roman period through to the twentieth century. The exhibits quality is first class however this quality is diminished by the lack of information regarding the exhibits. Luckily as I have visited before in 2013, I had some knowledge of some of the items. I have seen many people wandering around aimlessly not knowing what they are looking at. The staff at this museum have no interaction with visitors and seem to have no interest in the place itself (so very different to Mestrovic Gallery). When I spoke to family in Split, most said they believed that places like the museum employed family members and friends of politicians. Sound like nepotism to me. As this was my second time to this museum, I could concentrate on the less grand exhibits which I missed last time.

This a great museum for those who like museums. The city museums are always great to check out, it's cheaper than a guided tour but it gives you a great overview of the history of such a cool city. Also, the admission fee almost pays for itself if you use the washroom while you're there! Don't forget to ask for a student rate if you've got an ISIC.

We came across this museum quite by accident. It tells the story of the city over 3 floors of exhibits. If you want a little bit of time away from the crowds I suggest that you duck in here for a quick visit

Had only a short time in Split and didn’t take a guided tour, so this museum helped us understand the rich Roman history of the city. The building itself is part of that story.

Whilst details of main exhibits were in English, some of the lesser ones were only in Croatian so we felt we missed out a bit.

Very little information to read and follow. Found it very challenging to understand what we were looking at, where it was found, how old it is etc. No handouts in English, nor was there a guide even though there are numbers on things yet no where can you find the info. The entry fee is not expensive so not a total waste of time.

We were very excited to tour this museum, but it was poorly laid out. Nothing was chronological and there was no real "story" to tell. It didn't flow sequentially and there were fewer items there than I would have expected for a city museum. Save your money and explore elsewhere.

Covers Split's history from Roman times (first floor) to more recent times. All exhibits have informative labels in Croatian and English.
