Split Fish Market is located in the old town of Split, the main city in the center of Dalmatian Coast. It is a little market, which is only open at early morning. So, we went here at 7am and see some shops with fresh fish. Really, it is interesting and local place, but I thank that it would be bigger. Nice building and local atmosphere.

We were there by 8 and it was still busy. We bought fresh fish and cooked that night. It was delicious and costs 20 kn! Though the fish has many bones. For us non Croatian might not that easy to distinguish different types of fish. If you cook in Split would be nice to buy local fresh fish/ shrimp

Together with the Diocletian Palace and the Riva, the fish market is the beating heart of Split. Men go around looking for good fish; men cry out loudly to draw attention of passersby .. it is truly the brouhaha space. I went there, stopping from time to time at one stall and another. Nothing like covered fish market in Polynesia, nothing like opened fish markets in asian countries where fish and shrimps still move in the baskets ... there are not large of choices .. and most of the specimens come from fish farms, i.e., bad or good weather, they are there; seasons change, they are still there, and they are of same sizes. Prices are especially high. Definitely I prefer the fish market in Brittany (la Bretagne). Of course, to change with food in supermarket, you can try this place. But I don't share the same view of those who ranged it as the top of the top.

Croatians traditionally eat fish most of the days so if you want to catch best peaces come early in the morning latest untill 9:30 am and enjoy in selection. Entire fishmarket is placed on historical sulphur grounds so you won't find a single fly there in the entire market what is also unusual to see. Place is much more expensive in summer time due to tourist season.

The Split Fish Market (Ribarnica) is an institution in the old town of Split and easy to find as it is on Marmountova Street. In the morning the smell of the seafood is alluring, fresh and clean. What makes the Split Ribarnica interesting, as opposed to other fish markets that I have seen, is that there are no flies to be seen. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find a fly anywhere in the old town of Split or around Diocletion's palace. The palace and old town are situated above sulphur springs which keep flies away (this is well known to all Split locals and part of local legend). If you plan to eat seafood and are going to cook it yourself (self catering), you can't go wrong getting your seafood from here; the prices a reasonable and you can get the vendors to knock down the prizes a bit.

On my last visit to Split I was able to get into the Fish Market twice and on both occasions I was able to see some of the freshest seafood I have ever seen. The Ribarnica has been here for ages, and as you wander around you will notice the lack of any smell or flies. As a keen angler, I was impressed by the size of some of the Glithead Bream that were on show (must were well over the 60cm range, which is far larger than the Bream we have in Australia). Squid, octopus and other seafood choices were also up for sale. The prices tend to be reduced before the close of daily trading, so grab yourself a bargain.

Smelly and a bit messy as a fish market is expected to be. This is the ultimate place in Split to get fresh fish and seafood. It's worth visiting early in the morning when the merchandise just have been brought in

We stumbled upon the Fish Market during our walk along Marmontova Ulica. You can immediately pick up the strong smell of the market as all produce is terrifically fresh. Squid, eel, sardines and kippers were all on display. Small market but pretty busy with both locals and tourists.

Great fish selection. What you need for a good lunch or dinner at home you find it there. Also the cleaning service of fish fast and very good. If you are for holidays you have to try once at least.

A must have for any one visiting Split who has cooking facilities in their accommodation. Plenty of choice of fish and you can pay a small fee (around 5 kuna) for someone to eagerly descale and gut your purchased fish.
Advice - wear trainers if you can , or else expect to get fishy water on your feet!
