A temple dedicated to Jupiter back in the Roman period. The temple is not that big, but the architecture with a sphinx outside and the ceiling inside makes in interesting. Do look up! You'll need to pay enter this place, which gives you entrance to the St Domnius Cathedral too.

One of the major landmarks within Diocletian's Palace in the heart of Split, Croatia. Temple of Jupiter is fairly small building is in close proximity to the courtyard and opposite of the emperor's mausoleum. The temple has been excellently preserved both on the inside and out. The decapitated black granite sphinx, one out three still exist today that seems to guard the entryway to the temple.

The best strategy to visit this place is to purchase a combined ticket for five attractions at the Split ticket office, located in Peristyle, which entitles you to visit five incredible sites around the old city for US$30.00 per person (students pay US$15.00) .
This beautiful building consecrated in the 6th century was the palace's Temple of Jupiter. The baptismal font has a pre-Romanesque panel of King Zvonimir and other dignitaries. The statue of Saint John on one wall is by Ivan Mestrovic and was placed before the Second World War. Bishop João's tomb dates from the 8th century, and the other in front of him, that of Bishop Lourenço, dates back to the 16th century. XI. In the past, there was an atrium with six columns at this location. The body of the building had a vault and was supported by an underground crypt. Historically, in the early Middle Ages, the site became the current Baptistery of Saint John.

This small, beautiful building, consecrated in the 6th century (about the same time the mausoleum became a cathedral), was the Palace’s Temple of Jupiter. The body of the building had a coffered vault and rested on an underground crypt. In the middle ages it was turned into the Baptistery of St John. It is situated at the beginning of the narrowest street of Split "let me pass". The construction of this temple is said to have begun in 295 AD and it was completed in 305 AD.
Outside there is one of the Egyptian granite sphinxes brought in by Diocletian, deprived of the head and on the pediment at the top you can admire a beautiful sculpted frieze. Inside, dark, the decorations of the sarcophagi and the barrel vault are interesting, inspired by many architects of the early Renaissance who worked in the area. The sculpture of St. John the Baptist is the work of Ivan Meštrović.
Upon entering the temple, stop for a minute or two to explore the relief above the door. It’s made of white limestone which was quarried on the nearby Island of Brač.
Jupiter’s temple is rectangular, and it is placed on an elevated podium with a six-column porch. As emperor abdicated, some parts of the temple weren’t finished.

Can’t say that I was overly impressed with this place. It’s very small and down a small lane that leads away from the Peristyle. (The building is locked, so one of the attendants lets visitors in.)
Originally, this was a temple dedicated to Diocletian’s divine father, the Roman god, Jupiter. It was built between 295 and 305.
It was converted into the Baptistry of St. John the Baptist in about the 6th century.
The baptismal pool, made of stone slabs, was installed in the 12th/13th centuries. On one of the stone panels there’s an interesting carving of a Croatian king. The ceiling is also very interesting, but there’s a dearth of information about this ceiling.
The large bronze statue of St. John the Baptist was created by Croatian sculptor, Ivan Meštrović.
The day I was there, the lighting was quite poor, so it was difficult to read the information board inside the building.
I think, perhaps, my own somewhat negative impression of this place was due to my lack of information about the site. I should have checked the Internet for relevant information BEFORE visiting the site rather than after the fact.

We visited the old town of Split for a walk. Temple dedicated to Jupiter, the main god of Roman mythology, on the west side of Diocletian's Palace. Located in the middle of a narrow alleyway, it's so small you'd miss it if you weren't guided by a guide. In front of the arched entrance is a black granite headless sphinx statue protecting the temple. This sphinx sculpture was imported from Egypt in the 5th century. In the Middle Ages, it was converted into a Christian baptistery of St. John the Baptist, with reliefs engraved with Christian kings of Croatia and pentagrams, but it was not possible to visit.

For 15 euros you can purchase one ticket for the Cathedral, Crypt, Baptistery, Treasury, and the Bell Tower. The baptistry is a small room with a baptismal font and a statue of St. John the Baptist. In itself, it isn’t really worth the visit, but with the ticket that gets you into all places, it is worth a quick stop for some pictures.

The temple wasn't open when we went past the first time. It is near the narrow passage way called "let me pass". After we had visited the rest of the Diocletian palace, a small tour was going to the temple so I invited myself onto the end of the tour group and shimmied my way in inconspicuously to have a look. There is a Croatian king statue with two tombs inside the small temple.
Its well worth seeing if you can get inside.

A tourist trap par excellence, just like the crypt. Whether you pay for the temple alone or as part of a multiple pass, it's not at all worth the price you pay. Your visit will last between 10 seconds and 1 minute. In short, don't waste your time and move around, there is nothing at all to see...

The Temple of Jupiter has a grand title, do not expect a grand Temple, it’s tiny.
Without doubt very old and historic, the information board gives details of what is in front of you.
Entry is via the multi ticket system that you purchase at the ticket office opposite the Cathedral.
