We had an AWESOME time on this tour! There were 5 of us (we got a 10% family discount) from ages 15 to 57 and the first time on a segway for everyone. Boris was the perfect teacher.
I called the number on the website the day before and booked the 1.5 hour tour, which we think was perfect. We were actually gone about 1:45, so plan accordingly. The more you stop for photos, etc, the longer it takes. There was another tour both before and after us, so they are definitely busy in the summer. I think they’ll take up to 7 guests on a tour, with a second guide when the group exceeds 5. There had been a LOT of rain over the past week (much more than normal for end of July we were told), so we lucked out that the weather was nothing short of perfect. I would not want this tour in the rain...
We began with a lesson that took about 15-20 minutes. The area where Segway Tours Split is located is at the far (northwest) end of the promenade (under an umbrella, close to the water) where it is less crowded, so you have space to test your segway skills w/out taking out a pedestrian. Boris had us all feeling comfortable quickly; perfect instructions and perfect English.
Then we took off up Marjan Hill for the park where, for the next 90 minutes, we rode past gorgeous views of the coast, under the hum of cicadas in the trees. We stopped to put our feet in the Adriatic Sea at a small beach, visited a beautiful 15th century church that is occasionally used for weddings, past the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe, which is next to a nice terrace where people were having a drink in chairs overlooking the city, and took some photos against breathtaking backdrops of Split.
As we rode, the breeze cooled us off and contributed to the sailing-through-the-air feeling of segway riding.
We felt safe the whole way, even while riding through a portion of the city in the high season of July. Boris always had his eyes on us, advising us of every dip in the road, bicyclists, cars or pedestrians. For the most part, we had the road to ourselves around the park – so it really is a perfect route for segways.
Tip – there is no place to put a bag, so don’t do what I did and bring the massive Nikon w/ zoom lens so Boris won’t have to offer to carry it in his backpack the whole time (w/out complaining...thank you, Boris :). Bring what you plan to carry on your back. Maybe a water bottle and small camera in a little pack is all you need. And, if your feet feel a little tingly for the first 15 minutes, it will probably go away, as it did for us. By the end of the tour, our feet were fine. Wear comfy shoes though, since you’ll be on your feet for the tour. It was amazing, really. So glad we did it! Comparing to other segway tours in popular cities, the price was quite reasonable (about $50 per person).
