Sprawling but interesting and I was lucky to visit while there were still leaves on the trees. The gardens are still great but I guess some displays are gradually being pulled out. Don't forget the fountains at the southern end of the square. Lots of places to sit and enjoy the view and garden staff working really hard with the falling leaves. Huge green fence probably cuts off nealy a quarter of the space. Why?
Loved the addition to the statue recognising fighters against the Russians 4 years ago.

Statues of Lenin have been pulled down in many Ukrainian cities and Kharkiv lost its earlier this year. No decision has been made as to what will replace it. At one end of the square is a tent with displays featuring the conflict in the east. The end purpose is to raise money for the military. I find it disturbing that men and women are sent into battle without the needed equipment but it makes a visit to the square a memorable experience even if Lenin is no longer there to watch.

There are a number of interesting things to do here during the holidays. The majority of the square is set up with a Christmas themed carnival like atmosphere. Lots of food, rides for children, a skating rink, pony rides, etc. It is decorated very well and is worth seeing for some excellent holiday photos.

The ”park” part of the square was being renovated so all it had going for it was being a huge car park.

I attended the celebration of Shrovetide at Freedom Square with my family. 9 districts of Kharkiv were represented, each with its own twist. we had time to try pancakes of each district. Most liked the treats at the exhibition industrial district. I remember folk songs performed by the choir in which my mother-in-law performed. At the fair dedicated to the celebration of Carnival, a very warm atmosphere and friendly people. Near the square there were various amenities.
