My husband and I attended an organ concert at the Odessa Opera House. We were able to walk around and experience the awe and beauty of 100+ year old building, which made the experience worth it. We took a tour earlier that day and our tour guide said they have invested around $7M dollars in renovations and you can tell. They have done a great job with the maintenance of this historic structure.
However, as far as the concert itself, my husband and I stayed for about 40 minutes and then left due to the fact that we found it boring. It was just one lady playing an organ. There was also no air conditioning during the event so it made it very hot inside the building and made it uncomfortable to sit for a long period of time. I’m sure if it would’ve been a more entertaining performance and there would’ve been AC, it would’ve been a more pleasant experience.

I did a guided live-streamed walking tour with Olga from Heygo. In the second part of her tour, she started at the Monument to Catherine the Great. When we arrived at the Opera House, she informed us that the two statues on either side of the front entrance are called Tragedy and Comedy. One entrance is called the English Entrance as it faced the English Club. This is the first opera house built in Ukraine and its facade is decorated in the Italian baroque style. It is a very beautiful building and Olga gave us many lovely postcard shots of this theatre. We also walked to the old town and saw more lovely buildings and the spacious pedestrian streets. I learned a lot about Odessa through virtual walking tours with Olga.

Took the "Behind the Scenes" tour of the Opera House - Spectacular! Tour was in Russian, so that is limiting, but my wife translated the basics. Tons of information about history and construction and modifications. You view the major public spaces, then go backstage and below stage to see how all the magic is pulled off! You get to see the rooms where they store all the props from the Operas. costumes, and then go down below to see the mechanicals. There is a hydraulic system that lift's lowers sections of the stage. Also a trapdoor for those disappearing acts. Orchestra pit, even get to see air conditioning system - each SEAT has an A/C vent! Very interesting tour. Amazing technology for when it was built.

One of the finest buildings ever built in the history of mankind. It is stunning any time of the day and a jewel located in the heart of Odessa. Having never been inside, I still have some more to see. From the outside, it is hard to imagine designing the building better. It is perfect.

You have to go and check and fall in love.
Excursion is in Russian and English language, so You can really enjoy and takes about 1h 10 min. The most important is to check time, when is excursion. You can't just enter every time. So is better to go and just check. After You really want to go to performance either Opera or Ballet.

We've just come back from our tour of Ukraine- been to Lvov, Kiev and Odessa. Stayed with friends who are locals in Kiev and L'vov. They showed us the cities. Amazingly beautiful! Then went to Odessa. A very different city. We walked for a day by ourselves, saw the main sights, then bumped into OdessaWalks tour- very fun. Odessa is amazing! But you definitely need to get a good guide. They tell you really interesting stuff which is not in the city guides.

You should definitely see this building from inside. Even if you are not big Opera fan and are not able to be there in the evening, just ask for a sightseeing tour, which is usually at 12. Fantastic marvelous halls and stairs after great reconstruction finished few years ago. And one of the best curtains in the world

I had a wonderful experience seeing Barber of Seville in this incredibly beautiful building on 30 August. However, I had a problem with the booking which resulted in my having to pay twice. I used the site http://opera.odessa.ua/en/tickets/ which has a link under each performance, which takes you to an online booking tool. It's all in Ukrainian, so maybe I missed something, but it seemed pretty straightforward, so I went ahead, chose my seat and entered my card details. After I'd done this, I just got nothing- the system took me back to the beginning again as if I was about to make a new booking. I received no confirmation e mail. But my card was charged, and the seat was clearly shown as booked. I tried to call the Karabas agency which is the retailer, called a few numbers in Odessa from their website, but only one person spoke English and she told me to call another number, for which there was no reply. The Karabas agency has no system for contacting them electronically- no contact form and no e mail. I filled in the Opera's contact form and got no reply. Finally, I asked the English speaking guesthouse where I was due to stay in Crimea, to call to see if they could solve the problem. They were told that I should go to one of the Citrus Discount shops in Odessa, when I arrived, with my card and a copy of the bank statement showing the payment. As I was passing through Odessa for a few hours on 24 August on my way to Crimea, I called into the Citrus shop on Preobragenskaya 42. I spoke to 2 young men who were helpful and spoke good English but they said they could do nothing without a booking code, and that there was nobody available at Karabas. As I didn't want to risk not getting into the opera, I just cut my losses and bought another ticket from them. However, they were supposed to contact Karabas to try to get me my money back on the first booking, and of course I heard nothing.
The technical problem may have been with my hotmail account- I also didn't receive a registration notification from Ukrainian Railways.
I don't know how non-Ukrainian speakers are supposed to buy tickets in advance. From a hotel, I suppose, for a hefty commission, but the Opera and Karabas really should make the system more user-friendly and offer at least limited customer service in English and online, given that the Odessa Opera is an international venue. Nobody should be forced to give up and buy another ticket.
I'd be interested in other people's experiences.

A MUST SEE AND DO!! Take the time to see the ballet or opera while in the city. The outside is not so impressive, but the inside is spectacular. I am not an artsy individual and do not often see the ballet or an opera. But even for a sports guy like me, the inside was spectacular and the performances were amazing. I was very impressed with how athletic the ballet performers were. I have seen Swan Lake and the Nutcracker here. I would recommend both if you get the opportunity! Very Inexpensive as well as Entertaining!

Hello Can I enter if I arrived later than begining of the performance?
Thanks.

Hi,
Some theaters have a policy about this - if you're too late, no admission until the interval. But in Odessa I've seen people arriving when the performance was already under way. Just be nice to the staff and say you had a transport problem or so, and they will let you in. A little tip might help :-)
Hope this helps ...
ps on their website they say they have a dress code, but don't take it too serious - no need to wear a tuxedo or so. Casual smart will do, for gents no tie required.

Odessa Opera does not publish a schedule for September yet. Usually, it is for one month. You can check it on their site googling for opera Odessa. They have an English version. There is no need to buy tickets well in advance. Few days before is enough.
